Half the loft

Course Progress
As a general rule, you want to launch your distance wedges at about half the loft. I like to use an alignment stick to help create the visual of the trajectory. You can set up the alignment stick either by approximating half the loft by stepping on the club and getting the clubface parallel to the ground. Or you can use a 7-iron (approximately 30 degrees) or 6-iron (approximately 26 degrees) to help approximately that angle the ball should launch at.
Keep in mind that in order to get a low launch you need to play a premium ball, with a clean wedge, and make solid contact with some shaft lean in order to get in the ballpark of the right launch angle.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.440
This trajectory drill is half the loft, so one of the hallmarks of good wedge
2
00:00:10.440 --> 00:00:10.800
players
3
00:00:10.800 --> 00:00:16.460
is they get the ball to launch on a lower trajectory, a good guideline is about
4
00:00:16.460 --> 00:00:16.680
half
5
00:00:16.680 --> 00:00:22.040
the loft, so if you're hitting your 60 degree wedge that would be 30 or less,
6
00:00:22.040 --> 00:00:23.240
so what I
7
00:00:23.240 --> 00:00:29.180
like to do is create a little visual to help you see what 30 degrees might look
8
00:00:29.180 --> 00:00:29.960
like.
9
00:00:29.960 --> 00:00:33.620
So what you're going to do is you're going to look up your irons on whatever
10
00:00:33.620 --> 00:00:34.320
company's
11
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:41.920
website, so for me my Callaway 6 iron is 30 degrees of loft, so I could just
12
00:00:41.920 --> 00:00:42.440
take the
13
00:00:42.440 --> 00:00:46.730
club, put it down, so this is the 58 degree wedge, I could put it down and just
14
00:00:46.730 --> 00:00:47.160
try to
15
00:00:47.160 --> 00:00:51.260
kind of estimate, but I find that it's a lot easier to do it this way, so I'm
16
00:00:51.260 --> 00:00:52.000
going to
17
00:00:52.000 --> 00:01:00.040
take my 6 iron and I'm going to step on it just so that the face is flat to the
18
00:01:00.040 --> 00:01:00.920
ground,
19
00:01:00.920 --> 00:01:06.580
which would be right about there, okay, so once that's flat to the ground we'll
20
00:01:06.580 --> 00:01:07.080
stick
21
00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:13.940
the alignment stick in so that it pretty much matches it, I'll get that down
22
00:01:13.940 --> 00:01:15.520
pretty close,
23
00:01:15.520 --> 00:01:20.650
oh it's pretty close, and you know if you're trying to get really precise with
24
00:01:20.650 --> 00:01:21.120
this you're
25
00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:26.250
going to need a launch monitor or you can set up the trajectory gate, but this
26
00:01:26.250 --> 00:01:26.560
is more
27
00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:32.660
of just a visual, because if I were to get set up, looks like it's a little
28
00:01:32.660 --> 00:01:34.120
high, alright,
29
00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:38.500
so if I were to get set up, you could see that the loft on the sand wedge is
30
00:01:38.500 --> 00:01:39.280
way higher
31
00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:43.060
than this, so if you're not used to this type of trajectory, you're going to
32
00:01:43.060 --> 00:01:44.160
feel like,
33
00:01:44.160 --> 00:01:47.790
holy cow I'm going to have to do something to lower this loft and get the ball
34
00:01:47.790 --> 00:01:48.360
to launch
35
00:01:48.360 --> 00:01:51.800
a lot lower closer to the stick.
36
00:01:51.800 --> 00:01:55.650
The main things that you're going to look for when you're checking on video is
37
00:01:55.650 --> 00:01:56.200
you want
38
00:01:56.200 --> 00:02:00.460
to look for your upper body being stacked slightly ahead of the golf ball, you
39
00:02:00.460 --> 00:02:00.800
want
40
00:02:00.800 --> 00:02:06.870
to make sure that your hands are heads ahead, so you've got some shaft lean at
41
00:02:06.870 --> 00:02:07.760
impact, and
42
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:11.090
then you want to make sure that you're not hitting it too deep, or that the
43
00:02:11.090 --> 00:02:11.640
depth of the
44
00:02:11.640 --> 00:02:15.770
bottom of your swing isn't too low into the ground, so one of the hallmarks or
45
00:02:15.770 --> 00:02:16.200
one of
46
00:02:16.200 --> 00:02:24.240
the tricks is being able to get some of this shaft lean, but be controlling
47
00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:25.440
your level
48
00:02:25.440 --> 00:02:30.800
so you're not dropping down too much, so that even though you've got that shaft
49
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:31.120
lean,
50
00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:34.640
the bottom of the swing is relatively shallow and the club is just kind of sk
51
00:02:34.640 --> 00:02:35.240
imming the
52
00:02:35.240 --> 00:02:36.240
ground.
53
00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:40.270
Angle attack can be high, but because the bottom of the swing isn't too deep
54
00:02:40.270 --> 00:02:40.680
into the
55
00:02:40.680 --> 00:02:43.400
ground, you're not going to take a massive divot.
56
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:48.930
So this is just a quick setup station that I'll use for helping golfers just
57
00:02:48.930 --> 00:02:49.520
kind of
58
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:50.520
visualize it.
59
00:02:50.520 --> 00:02:54.810
It's a little less sensitive than if you're doing the trajectory gate, so it's
60
00:02:54.810 --> 00:02:55.320
a quicker
61
00:02:55.320 --> 00:02:59.400
setup and I find more people are willing to do this one if you're not willing
62
00:02:59.400 --> 00:02:59.680
to go
63
00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:02.600
the full nine yards and set up the trajectory gate.
64
00:03:02.600 --> 00:03:08.130
So now we're going to try, and regardless of the length of the shot that we're
65
00:03:08.130 --> 00:03:08.600
going
66
00:03:08.600 --> 00:03:13.950
to hit, we want it to take off pretty close to this trajectory window, so it
67
00:03:13.950 --> 00:03:14.360
would go
68
00:03:14.360 --> 00:03:20.240
up and then kind of come out of it depending on how far we're hitting it.
69
00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:24.420
So again, if you are struggling with it, you're going to look for the major
70
00:03:24.420 --> 00:03:26.200
things of either
71
00:03:26.200 --> 00:03:32.500
the shaft being too vertical, that would cause the club or the ball to pop up
72
00:03:32.500 --> 00:03:34.680
much higher.
73
00:03:34.680 --> 00:03:40.030
You can look for your weight distribution being too far back or the center of
74
00:03:40.030 --> 00:03:40.640
your upper body
75
00:03:40.640 --> 00:03:42.320
being too far back.
76
00:03:42.320 --> 00:03:47.520
So if you're back here, that will also tend to make it pop up.
77
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:52.690
And then if you're in a good position, but you hit it too high on the club, if
78
00:03:52.690 --> 00:03:53.360
you tend
79
00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:58.490
to hit kind of really deep, you'll see I hit that plenty fat, which will often
80
00:03:58.490 --> 00:03:58.760
happen
81
00:03:58.760 --> 00:04:01.120
when you're getting it pretty deep like that.
82
00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:05.680
And the ball would actually pop up higher than the stick, usually on the lower
83
00:04:05.680 --> 00:04:07.760
spin side.
84
00:04:07.760 --> 00:04:10.240
Now this one is not as crucial.
85
00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:13.800
The trajectory gate, you kind of have to hit it from dead in line with this one
86
00:04:13.800 --> 00:04:14.320
because
87
00:04:14.320 --> 00:04:16.480
we're just trying to match this angle.
88
00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:21.610
You can continue moving further back and just try to be parallel to the stick
89
00:04:21.610 --> 00:04:22.240
as it's taking
90
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:23.240
off.
91
00:04:23.240 --> 00:04:25.760
You don't have to actually have it dead in line, check on video and make sure
92
00:04:25.760 --> 00:04:26.120
that it's
93
00:04:26.120 --> 00:04:28.080
launching at the exact same angle.
94
00:04:28.080 --> 00:04:29.080
Okay.
95
00:04:29.080 --> 00:04:30.080
So a little demo.
96
00:04:30.080 --> 00:04:33.380
So remember, if you are really trying to get this low launch and higher spin,
97
00:04:33.380 --> 00:04:33.840
you've got
98
00:04:33.840 --> 00:04:35.720
to make sure that the face is pretty clean.
99
00:04:35.720 --> 00:04:41.850
This is already getting a little bit dirty, but it's still a good visual setup
100
00:04:41.850 --> 00:04:42.760
station.
101
00:04:42.760 --> 00:04:49.380
So without kind of lunging too far forward, set up with my upper body, a little
102
00:04:49.380 --> 00:04:49.920
bit more
103
00:04:49.920 --> 00:04:55.080
stacked, and then just try to get a good one there.
104
00:04:55.080 --> 00:04:58.410
So bottom of the swing, far enough forward, we'll have to check on video to see
105
00:04:58.410 --> 00:04:58.920
how close
106
00:04:58.920 --> 00:04:59.920
that was.
107
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:04.140
But that felt like that was on the lower side, good amount of spin, good
108
00:05:04.140 --> 00:05:05.280
contact, I'd be
109
00:05:05.280 --> 00:05:06.120
really happy with that.
110
00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:09.480
So it's a really simple station.
111
00:05:09.480 --> 00:05:12.530
If you don't want to set up the full gate or you don't have access to a launch
112
00:05:12.530 --> 00:05:13.160
monitor,
113
00:05:13.160 --> 00:05:18.520
just take a 60 or your six iron or seven iron, look at the loft online because
114
00:05:18.520 --> 00:05:18.920
different
115
00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:23.110
sets, different set makeups will have different lofts and then get it as close
116
00:05:23.110 --> 00:05:24.240
to that 30 degree
117
00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:25.240
angle as you can.
118
00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:31.120
That'll just give you a visual as far as where you want that loft at impact.
119
00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:37.740
You have an alignment or a loft magnet, or you can just take a T and put it on
120
00:05:37.740 --> 00:05:38.920
the club.
121
00:05:38.920 --> 00:05:46.460
I want you to try and model where you would need to be at impact in order to
122
00:05:46.460 --> 00:05:47.480
get that back
123
00:05:47.480 --> 00:05:48.480
on.
124
00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:52.190
In order to get the stick kind of matching, you'll feel like you're going to be
125
00:05:52.190 --> 00:05:52.840
much more
126
00:05:52.840 --> 00:05:57.070
forward, your hands forward, as long as you do that wall controlling depth, you
127
00:05:57.070 --> 00:05:57.560
too will
128
00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:01.350
get a lower launching shot which will help you with your overall distance
129
00:06:01.350 --> 00:06:02.280
consistency.
