A simple game for dialing in your distance control
This is one of the simplest, and most effective, ways to train your distance control. Feel free to customize the rules as you can imagine, but as a starting point try and land each following ball where the last ball ended up. Once you reach the furthest you can hit the ball you can either work backward (land each ball shorter so it finishes rolling where the last one stopped) or start over with the shorter carry shot and ladder back up to the longer shots. Practice this for 10-15 minutes to really help improve your touch with your distance wedges.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.400
This distance wedge drill is leapfrog, so one of the things that I want you to
2
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:10.580
work
3
00:00:10.580 --> 00:00:14.740
on when you're practicing your distance wedge is different lengths of shots or
4
00:00:14.740 --> 00:00:15.040
different
5
00:00:15.040 --> 00:00:16.040
lengths of swings.
6
00:00:16.040 --> 00:00:20.450
Now I like my students to have kind of stock shots, especially the fewer, the
7
00:00:20.450 --> 00:00:21.280
less amount
8
00:00:21.280 --> 00:00:24.510
of time you have to practice, the more I just want you having one or two
9
00:00:24.510 --> 00:00:25.760
standard distances.
10
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:31.610
Say you're 3/4 with your 60 degree wedge or 58 degree wedge is 50 yards,
11
00:00:31.610 --> 00:00:32.200
practice that
12
00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:33.200
a bunch.
13
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:36.980
And then let's say with the sand wedge it's 70 or 80 yards, practice that a
14
00:00:36.980 --> 00:00:37.520
bunch.
15
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:40.730
And then when you're on the course you can kind of try to take a little off or
16
00:00:40.730 --> 00:00:41.200
a little
17
00:00:41.200 --> 00:00:46.120
over your chest height or your 3/4 swing.
18
00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:49.060
But if you have a little bit more time and you can practice your wedges, let's
19
00:00:49.060 --> 00:00:49.360
say at
20
00:00:49.360 --> 00:00:54.110
minimum once a week, from talking with other coaches, I think pros practice
21
00:00:54.110 --> 00:00:55.200
their distance
22
00:00:55.200 --> 00:01:01.800
wedges, let's say 3 hours a week, kind of sounds like it's a decent average.
23
00:01:01.800 --> 00:01:05.120
So if you can do it once a week then I want you to do some type of game.
24
00:01:05.120 --> 00:01:10.400
So leapfrog would be basically trying to hit the ball different distances each
25
00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:10.840
shot until
26
00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:16.690
you get to your furthest away and then kind of moon walking or working the
27
00:01:16.690 --> 00:01:18.280
distance backward.
28
00:01:18.280 --> 00:01:21.350
It's kind of like a combo scale, ultimately it comes down to controlling loft
29
00:01:21.350 --> 00:01:21.760
and the
30
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:24.400
speed of the club and the quality of contact.
31
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:28.620
But I want you to ideally use kind of the length of swing as your big regulator
32
00:01:28.620 --> 00:01:29.080
where
33
00:01:29.080 --> 00:01:32.870
you're going to focus on getting the same impact conditions, the same tempo,
34
00:01:32.870 --> 00:01:33.740
just different
35
00:01:33.740 --> 00:01:37.440
lengths of swings to hit the different distances.
36
00:01:37.440 --> 00:01:42.280
So there's no right or wrong way to do this.
37
00:01:42.280 --> 00:01:46.000
One way that I like to do it is try to land the ball where the last one
38
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.040
finished, if you
39
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:50.160
have a flat range this works pretty well.
40
00:01:50.160 --> 00:01:53.280
So let's try.
41
00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:58.960
So we hit that one, it landed at about 40 and then it rolled to 50.
42
00:01:58.960 --> 00:02:02.440
So now my next shot I'm going to try and hit it 50.
43
00:02:02.440 --> 00:02:06.240
So I'm going to try to take this back a little bit further.
44
00:02:06.240 --> 00:02:12.980
For me that's going to feel let's say an extra six inches or so and that landed
45
00:02:12.980 --> 00:02:13.640
at about
46
00:02:13.640 --> 00:02:16.320
53 and that rolled close to 60.
47
00:02:16.320 --> 00:02:24.300
So now we're getting closer to my 3/4, but again there's no a race button
48
00:02:24.300 --> 00:02:25.440
wherever it
49
00:02:25.440 --> 00:02:26.440
ends up.
50
00:02:26.440 --> 00:02:29.960
That's where I'm going to try to land the next one until I get to the furthest
51
00:02:29.960 --> 00:02:30.600
distance
52
00:02:30.600 --> 00:02:34.360
I can hit.
53
00:02:34.360 --> 00:02:36.040
Oh we killed it.
54
00:02:36.040 --> 00:02:39.800
That landed 65.
55
00:02:39.800 --> 00:02:43.200
It rolled to about 70.
56
00:02:43.200 --> 00:02:54.080
So now we're getting close to my upper limit here with my distance wedge for my
57
00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:55.720
58.
58
00:02:55.720 --> 00:02:57.800
Well it's a tiny bit high but I think that's going to be pretty good.
59
00:02:57.800 --> 00:03:03.650
Hey that was my best one that landed looked like a yard or less from the other
60
00:03:03.650 --> 00:03:04.240
golf ball.
61
00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:07.350
But now we're going to have to start, we either go back to the beginning and
62
00:03:07.350 --> 00:03:08.120
start over or
63
00:03:08.120 --> 00:03:09.720
we start working it backward.
64
00:03:09.720 --> 00:03:14.470
If you're working it backward then your goal is to get it to finish where the
65
00:03:14.470 --> 00:03:15.200
last ball
66
00:03:15.200 --> 00:03:16.200
stopped.
67
00:03:16.200 --> 00:03:19.240
So now I have to try to land this a little bit shorter.
68
00:03:19.240 --> 00:03:23.580
Problem is at the high end they land and stop pretty much where they land and
69
00:03:23.580 --> 00:03:24.160
stop.
70
00:03:24.160 --> 00:03:25.920
There's not much release.
71
00:03:25.920 --> 00:03:29.770
So I'm just going to back this up to about the 60 yard shot and then play
72
00:03:29.770 --> 00:03:30.560
backward from
73
00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:31.560
there.
74
00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:33.280
So 60 yard shot.
75
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:43.840
And the reason, you'll see that's a little pull, 62, 63.
76
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:46.800
Not too bad but pulled offline.
77
00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:50.410
Some golfers I find have a hard time speeding it up and some golfers have a
78
00:03:50.410 --> 00:03:51.400
hard time slowing
79
00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:52.400
it down.
80
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:56.040
So that's why I recommend the leapfrog because you'll see which kind of inflic
81
00:03:56.040 --> 00:03:57.040
ts you more.
82
00:03:57.040 --> 00:04:01.440
Do you start to, some people, once they've taken bigger swings then as you
83
00:04:01.440 --> 00:04:02.240
start trying
84
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:06.580
to throttle it back, they start slowing down their tempo and maybe get a little
85
00:04:06.580 --> 00:04:07.160
bit lazy
86
00:04:07.160 --> 00:04:09.040
with their pivot.
87
00:04:09.040 --> 00:04:12.910
So I find doing the leapfrog game reveals some issues and helps you train
88
00:04:12.910 --> 00:04:14.280
distance control.
89
00:04:14.280 --> 00:04:19.410
Those are two very good, useful skills to practice until you get really
90
00:04:19.410 --> 00:04:20.040
proficient with
91
00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:21.040
your distance wedges.
92
00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:24.240
And then like I said, I think you could practice it if you're competitive gol
93
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:25.040
fer at least once
94
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:26.040
a week.
95
00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:29.360
If you're more of a casual golfer once a month is probably good enough.
96
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:32.290
Otherwise just dial in a couple numbers because it's not just about hitting it
97
00:04:32.290 --> 00:04:32.840
solid, you've
98
00:04:32.840 --> 00:04:38.700
got to control distance, comes down to loft, speed, and speed is built into the
99
00:04:38.700 --> 00:04:39.200
length
100
00:04:39.200 --> 00:04:43.760
of swing as well as the consistency of tempo.
101
00:04:43.760 --> 00:04:51.200
We can train all of those with this leapfrog game to kind of the low spinner.
102
00:04:51.200 --> 00:04:55.760
Not too low, the face is getting dirty and I got a little slide.
103
00:04:55.760 --> 00:05:03.840
Let's get extra stacked, there we go, call out a number.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.400
This distance wedge drill is leapfrog, so one of the things that I want you to
2
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:10.580
work
3
00:00:10.580 --> 00:00:14.740
on when you're practicing your distance wedge is different lengths of shots or
4
00:00:14.740 --> 00:00:15.040
different
5
00:00:15.040 --> 00:00:16.040
lengths of swings.
6
00:00:16.040 --> 00:00:20.450
Now I like my students to have kind of stock shots, especially the fewer, the
7
00:00:20.450 --> 00:00:21.280
less amount
8
00:00:21.280 --> 00:00:24.510
of time you have to practice, the more I just want you having one or two
9
00:00:24.510 --> 00:00:25.760
standard distances.
10
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:31.610
Say you're 3/4 with your 60 degree wedge or 58 degree wedge is 50 yards,
11
00:00:31.610 --> 00:00:32.200
practice that
12
00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:33.200
a bunch.
13
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:36.980
And then let's say with the sand wedge it's 70 or 80 yards, practice that a
14
00:00:36.980 --> 00:00:37.520
bunch.
15
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:40.730
And then when you're on the course you can kind of try to take a little off or
16
00:00:40.730 --> 00:00:41.200
a little
17
00:00:41.200 --> 00:00:46.120
over your chest height or your 3/4 swing.
18
00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:49.060
But if you have a little bit more time and you can practice your wedges, let's
19
00:00:49.060 --> 00:00:49.360
say at
20
00:00:49.360 --> 00:00:54.110
minimum once a week, from talking with other coaches, I think pros practice
21
00:00:54.110 --> 00:00:55.200
their distance
22
00:00:55.200 --> 00:01:01.800
wedges, let's say 3 hours a week, kind of sounds like it's a decent average.
23
00:01:01.800 --> 00:01:05.120
So if you can do it once a week then I want you to do some type of game.
24
00:01:05.120 --> 00:01:10.400
So leapfrog would be basically trying to hit the ball different distances each
25
00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:10.840
shot until
26
00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:16.690
you get to your furthest away and then kind of moon walking or working the
27
00:01:16.690 --> 00:01:18.280
distance backward.
28
00:01:18.280 --> 00:01:21.350
It's kind of like a combo scale, ultimately it comes down to controlling loft
29
00:01:21.350 --> 00:01:21.760
and the
30
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:24.400
speed of the club and the quality of contact.
31
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:28.620
But I want you to ideally use kind of the length of swing as your big regulator
32
00:01:28.620 --> 00:01:29.080
where
33
00:01:29.080 --> 00:01:32.870
you're going to focus on getting the same impact conditions, the same tempo,
34
00:01:32.870 --> 00:01:33.740
just different
35
00:01:33.740 --> 00:01:37.440
lengths of swings to hit the different distances.
36
00:01:37.440 --> 00:01:42.280
So there's no right or wrong way to do this.
37
00:01:42.280 --> 00:01:46.000
One way that I like to do it is try to land the ball where the last one
38
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.040
finished, if you
39
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:50.160
have a flat range this works pretty well.
40
00:01:50.160 --> 00:01:53.280
So let's try.
41
00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:58.960
So we hit that one, it landed at about 40 and then it rolled to 50.
42
00:01:58.960 --> 00:02:02.440
So now my next shot I'm going to try and hit it 50.
43
00:02:02.440 --> 00:02:06.240
So I'm going to try to take this back a little bit further.
44
00:02:06.240 --> 00:02:12.980
For me that's going to feel let's say an extra six inches or so and that landed
45
00:02:12.980 --> 00:02:13.640
at about
46
00:02:13.640 --> 00:02:16.320
53 and that rolled close to 60.
47
00:02:16.320 --> 00:02:24.300
So now we're getting closer to my 3/4, but again there's no a race button
48
00:02:24.300 --> 00:02:25.440
wherever it
49
00:02:25.440 --> 00:02:26.440
ends up.
50
00:02:26.440 --> 00:02:29.960
That's where I'm going to try to land the next one until I get to the furthest
51
00:02:29.960 --> 00:02:30.600
distance
52
00:02:30.600 --> 00:02:34.360
I can hit.
53
00:02:34.360 --> 00:02:36.040
Oh we killed it.
54
00:02:36.040 --> 00:02:39.800
That landed 65.
55
00:02:39.800 --> 00:02:43.200
It rolled to about 70.
56
00:02:43.200 --> 00:02:54.080
So now we're getting close to my upper limit here with my distance wedge for my
57
00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:55.720
58.
58
00:02:55.720 --> 00:02:57.800
Well it's a tiny bit high but I think that's going to be pretty good.
59
00:02:57.800 --> 00:03:03.650
Hey that was my best one that landed looked like a yard or less from the other
60
00:03:03.650 --> 00:03:04.240
golf ball.
61
00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:07.350
But now we're going to have to start, we either go back to the beginning and
62
00:03:07.350 --> 00:03:08.120
start over or
63
00:03:08.120 --> 00:03:09.720
we start working it backward.
64
00:03:09.720 --> 00:03:14.470
If you're working it backward then your goal is to get it to finish where the
65
00:03:14.470 --> 00:03:15.200
last ball
66
00:03:15.200 --> 00:03:16.200
stopped.
67
00:03:16.200 --> 00:03:19.240
So now I have to try to land this a little bit shorter.
68
00:03:19.240 --> 00:03:23.580
Problem is at the high end they land and stop pretty much where they land and
69
00:03:23.580 --> 00:03:24.160
stop.
70
00:03:24.160 --> 00:03:25.920
There's not much release.
71
00:03:25.920 --> 00:03:29.770
So I'm just going to back this up to about the 60 yard shot and then play
72
00:03:29.770 --> 00:03:30.560
backward from
73
00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:31.560
there.
74
00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:33.280
So 60 yard shot.
75
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:43.840
And the reason, you'll see that's a little pull, 62, 63.
76
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:46.800
Not too bad but pulled offline.
77
00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:50.410
Some golfers I find have a hard time speeding it up and some golfers have a
78
00:03:50.410 --> 00:03:51.400
hard time slowing
79
00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:52.400
it down.
80
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:56.040
So that's why I recommend the leapfrog because you'll see which kind of inflic
81
00:03:56.040 --> 00:03:57.040
ts you more.
82
00:03:57.040 --> 00:04:01.440
Do you start to, some people, once they've taken bigger swings then as you
83
00:04:01.440 --> 00:04:02.240
start trying
84
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:06.580
to throttle it back, they start slowing down their tempo and maybe get a little
85
00:04:06.580 --> 00:04:07.160
bit lazy
86
00:04:07.160 --> 00:04:09.040
with their pivot.
87
00:04:09.040 --> 00:04:12.910
So I find doing the leapfrog game reveals some issues and helps you train
88
00:04:12.910 --> 00:04:14.280
distance control.
89
00:04:14.280 --> 00:04:19.410
Those are two very good, useful skills to practice until you get really
90
00:04:19.410 --> 00:04:20.040
proficient with
91
00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:21.040
your distance wedges.
92
00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:24.240
And then like I said, I think you could practice it if you're competitive gol
93
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:25.040
fer at least once
94
00:04:25.040 --> 00:04:26.040
a week.
95
00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:29.360
If you're more of a casual golfer once a month is probably good enough.
96
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:32.290
Otherwise just dial in a couple numbers because it's not just about hitting it
97
00:04:32.290 --> 00:04:32.840
solid, you've
98
00:04:32.840 --> 00:04:38.700
got to control distance, comes down to loft, speed, and speed is built into the
99
00:04:38.700 --> 00:04:39.200
length
100
00:04:39.200 --> 00:04:43.760
of swing as well as the consistency of tempo.
101
00:04:43.760 --> 00:04:51.200
We can train all of those with this leapfrog game to kind of the low spinner.
102
00:04:51.200 --> 00:04:55.760
Not too low, the face is getting dirty and I got a little slide.
103
00:04:55.760 --> 00:05:03.840
Let's get extra stacked, there we go, call out a number.
