The motorcycle movement is key for shaft lean, solid contact, and a lower launch

A common question I get about the distance wedge is if we use a motorcycle move or not. Yes, anytime we want shaft lean with a square clubface, we need a bit of the motorcycle movement. Often, the motorcycle move feels more gradual with the distance wedge compared to the full swing. If you struggle with contact or high launch then you'll want to experiment with the motorcycle movement for your distance wedge shot.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.500
This is the motorcycle for the distance wedge.

2
00:00:08.500 --> 00:00:13.700
So with the distance wedge, it's kind of a blend from the finesse wedge or if

3
00:00:13.700 --> 00:00:14.280
we had

4
00:00:14.280 --> 00:00:17.870
a spectrum of we've got the finesse wedge on one end and the driver swing on

5
00:00:17.870 --> 00:00:18.760
the other,

6
00:00:18.760 --> 00:00:22.290
it's closer to the finesse wedge, but it does have a lot of the full swing

7
00:00:22.290 --> 00:00:23.080
elements,

8
00:00:23.080 --> 00:00:26.560
one in which is it does have some of the motorcycle movement.

9
00:00:26.560 --> 00:00:31.160
In fact, it tends to have almost the same amount as the full iron swing.

10
00:00:31.160 --> 00:00:36.860
Tends to have a little less of the forearm supination on the way through, but

11
00:00:36.860 --> 00:00:38.240
it tends

12
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:41.260
to feel like you're still getting some of this motorcycle, still getting some

13
00:00:41.260 --> 00:00:41.500
of that

14
00:00:41.500 --> 00:00:43.360
lead wrist flex.

15
00:00:43.360 --> 00:00:49.030
The timing tends to be a little bit more blended instead of really dynamic in

16
00:00:49.030 --> 00:00:50.280
transition.

17
00:00:50.280 --> 00:00:57.300
So for the distance wedge, I tend to see more of the motorcycle happening at

18
00:00:57.300 --> 00:00:58.280
the top of the

19
00:00:58.280 --> 00:01:04.640
swing and then just kind of maintaining it, at least until down during the

20
00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:05.560
release, as

21
00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:09.840
opposed to dynamically moving into it in transition.

22
00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:12.870
That dynamic movement tends to add power, but adds a little bit more timing,

23
00:01:12.870 --> 00:01:13.320
and I just

24
00:01:13.320 --> 00:01:16.360
don't see that quite as often on the 3D.

25
00:01:16.360 --> 00:01:20.610
It doesn't mean you can't make it work, but I would say the general pattern is

26
00:01:20.610 --> 00:01:21.160
a little

27
00:01:21.160 --> 00:01:26.160
bit more dialed back or blended rate of the motorcycle.

28
00:01:26.160 --> 00:01:31.370
So what I want you to do, if you look at yourself on video and you have a

29
00:01:31.370 --> 00:01:33.280
tendency to have the

30
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:38.620
wrist kind of more straight up and down, you tend to have really high launching

31
00:01:38.620 --> 00:01:39.360
kind of

32
00:01:39.360 --> 00:01:46.070
wedge shots more like that, we're lacking the shaft lean and if you've ruled

33
00:01:46.070 --> 00:01:47.000
out that it's

34
00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:50.720
not from the body, then the place where you most likely are going to have to

35
00:01:50.720 --> 00:01:51.360
look is at

36
00:01:51.360 --> 00:01:56.080
the wrist and the shoulders, and this motorcycle move is one of the key ways to

37
00:01:56.080 --> 00:01:56.880
get a little

38
00:01:56.880 --> 00:01:58.720
bit more shaft lean from the arms.

39
00:01:58.720 --> 00:02:02.360
You can see when I do that, that moves my hands slightly ahead.

40
00:02:02.360 --> 00:02:08.760
If I do that movement during the backswing, and then I hit it more with my body

41
00:02:08.760 --> 00:02:09.440
turn,

42
00:02:09.440 --> 00:02:12.770
you'll see that that comes out a whole lot lower, and I tend to err on getting

43
00:02:12.770 --> 00:02:13.200
more of

44
00:02:13.200 --> 00:02:17.640
a picked contact or more kind of thin.

45
00:02:17.640 --> 00:02:24.140
It allows me to then be a little bit more aggressive with my shoulder tilt on

46
00:02:24.140 --> 00:02:24.840
the way

47
00:02:24.840 --> 00:02:30.190
through, but again, you'll see that launched a little bit lower compared to

48
00:02:30.190 --> 00:02:31.000
that first

49
00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:37.360
one where I had more of that wrist extension kind of like that.

50
00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:41.740
If you struggle with more of your trajectory, fat shots, thin shots, clean

51
00:02:41.740 --> 00:02:42.800
contact and getting

52
00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:46.760
a little bit of this motorcycle is going to be really helpful for getting that

53
00:02:46.760 --> 00:02:47.760
shaft lean.

54
00:02:47.760 --> 00:02:52.280
Timing of when you're going to do it is more up at the top of the swing.

55
00:02:52.280 --> 00:02:57.490
From there, you're going to feel like you just keep that motorcycle until about

56
00:02:57.490 --> 00:02:57.920
here.

57
00:02:57.920 --> 00:03:01.460
When you're feeling like that ulnar deviation and that cast pattern is really

58
00:03:01.460 --> 00:03:01.960
starting

59
00:03:01.960 --> 00:03:08.610
to kick in, and then that combination will help give you that shallow, but

60
00:03:08.610 --> 00:03:09.960
solid contact

61
00:03:09.960 --> 00:03:13.600
and give you a little bit more of that shaft lean and that lower flight.

62
00:03:13.600 --> 00:03:18.220
Let's do a couple of demonstrations on this motorcycle idea, so we're going to

63
00:03:18.220 --> 00:03:18.680
go up to

64
00:03:18.680 --> 00:03:22.390
the top of the swing, preset a little bit of that motorcycle, and now we're

65
00:03:22.390 --> 00:03:23.000
just going

66
00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:28.650
to feel like we hit this mostly with our body pivot, it wasn't too bad, maybe a

67
00:03:28.650 --> 00:03:29.280
little

68
00:03:29.280 --> 00:03:31.600
extra lower body on that.

69
00:03:31.600 --> 00:03:35.890
Now second progression, we're going to go up to the top of the swing, preset

70
00:03:35.890 --> 00:03:37.120
the motorcycle,

71
00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:42.260
and now we're going to feel like as we rotate down, we have just a little bit

72
00:03:42.260 --> 00:03:43.040
of that cast

73
00:03:43.040 --> 00:03:48.180
pattern and you'll see I get a little bit more clean contact that way, and even

74
00:03:48.180 --> 00:03:48.320
though

75
00:03:48.320 --> 00:03:52.790
there's a little bit of a cast, I still have the feeling of everything coming

76
00:03:52.790 --> 00:03:53.320
through.

77
00:03:53.320 --> 00:03:56.570
In this drill, in this shorter shot, I'm going to feel like I kind of keep that

78
00:03:56.570 --> 00:03:57.160
motorcycle

79
00:03:57.160 --> 00:04:02.370
all the way through to there, but in reality, if during the release, as I'm

80
00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:03.200
getting some

81
00:04:03.200 --> 00:04:07.200
of this kind of unhinged, I lose it, that's going to be perfectly fine because

82
00:04:07.200 --> 00:04:07.760
my hands

83
00:04:07.760 --> 00:04:11.540
are going to be far enough ahead that I'm going to get good clean ball contact

84
00:04:11.540 --> 00:04:12.080
first.

85
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:16.280
Now we'll do the last one where we try to put it in dynamically, so we're going

86
00:04:16.280 --> 00:04:16.680
to have

87
00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:22.400
just kind of a little blending of it up towards the top and then feeling like

88
00:04:22.400 --> 00:04:23.680
we keep a little

89
00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:29.560
bit of that motorcycle with a good pivot and that good shallow arm movement.

90
00:04:29.560 --> 00:04:33.630
So if you're struggling with contact, or more so if you're struggling with

91
00:04:33.630 --> 00:04:34.800
trajectory,

92
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:39.560
look at the motorcycle to help with quality of contact as well as controlling

93
00:04:39.560 --> 00:04:40.160
loft and

94
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:44.250
shaft lean, those will have a big impact on solid contact as well as trajectory

95
00:04:44.250 --> 00:04:44.520
for

96
00:04:44.520 --> 00:04:47.900
your distance wedges.
