Learn how to add a few yards to your stock wedge shots

Being really good with your distance wedge comes down to solid contact, loft control, and speed control. This allows you to control your distances precisely. When in between clubs, if you have the room to land it short, it's often easier to take the longer club and swing easier. Occasionally, this isn't the best strategy. Swinging easier can create less spin, so if you are hitting it down wind or landing on a downslope, you might want to consider drawing the ball in order to get 5 extra yards out of your stock distance wedge.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.960
This distance wedge video is squeezing a few extra yards out of your distance

2
00:00:08.960 --> 00:00:09.920
wedge.

3
00:00:09.920 --> 00:00:13.120
So there will be times where you are in between clubs.

4
00:00:13.120 --> 00:00:17.600
I'm a big fan of training kind of your couple different length back swings.

5
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:22.800
The majority of golfers, your best shots are going to be more of your kind of

6
00:00:22.800 --> 00:00:23.480
shoulder

7
00:00:23.480 --> 00:00:26.280
height or three quarter wedge shots.

8
00:00:26.280 --> 00:00:28.800
Rarely is it going to be the all the way full.

9
00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:33.290
And it's hard to get enough spin on the belly button height so that shoulder

10
00:00:33.290 --> 00:00:34.400
height swing

11
00:00:34.400 --> 00:00:40.600
is going to be the one where it typically gets kind of that one half, one hit

12
00:00:40.600 --> 00:00:41.640
and stop.

13
00:00:41.640 --> 00:00:45.820
So I recommend getting really good at the number for each of your wedges.

14
00:00:45.820 --> 00:00:52.020
So I have a 58, 54, 50 and I have my stock wedges for that one that I love to

15
00:00:52.020 --> 00:00:52.680
hit.

16
00:00:52.680 --> 00:00:56.730
But that doesn't mean that you're never going to hit a full swing distance

17
00:00:56.730 --> 00:00:57.240
wedge because

18
00:00:57.240 --> 00:00:58.240
there will be gaps.

19
00:00:58.240 --> 00:01:01.640
There will be times where the extra speed will give you more spin.

20
00:01:01.640 --> 00:01:04.400
So it's easier to get it to stop.

21
00:01:04.400 --> 00:01:08.210
And strategy wise, you know, potentially it's downwind and they need to try to

22
00:01:08.210 --> 00:01:08.640
get more

23
00:01:08.640 --> 00:01:09.640
spin.

24
00:01:09.640 --> 00:01:14.720
If I hit more of the lower, like the lower swing speed shot, then I'm not going

25
00:01:14.720 --> 00:01:14.840
to get

26
00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:16.840
enough spin and it might roll over the green.

27
00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:20.840
Well there are a few times where you need to squeeze a little extra yardage out

28
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:21.160
of your

29
00:01:21.160 --> 00:01:25.380
distance wedge because you want to swing hard enough to get spin and you don't

30
00:01:25.380 --> 00:01:25.840
want to

31
00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:28.260
take the bigger club and swing smooth.

32
00:01:28.260 --> 00:01:30.880
I would say that this is definitely a more advanced skill.

33
00:01:30.880 --> 00:01:36.780
If you're a 10 handicapper above, try this only kind of in your fun casual

34
00:01:36.780 --> 00:01:37.720
rounds.

35
00:01:37.720 --> 00:01:40.840
This isn't something that I would recommend falling in love with.

36
00:01:40.840 --> 00:01:44.340
But if you need to squeeze a few extra yardage out of your distance wedge,

37
00:01:44.340 --> 00:01:45.360
there's two ways

38
00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:49.780
that I like to try to do it, neither of which is swinging harder.

39
00:01:49.780 --> 00:01:53.840
I want you to stick with your full length swing and full length tempo.

40
00:01:53.840 --> 00:01:57.670
But we're going to try to deloft the club a little bit to squeeze a few extra

41
00:01:57.670 --> 00:01:58.280
yards.

42
00:01:58.280 --> 00:02:01.760
So option one is we're going to hit more of a draw.

43
00:02:01.760 --> 00:02:04.240
Option two is we're going to hit more of a pull.

44
00:02:04.240 --> 00:02:08.540
Depending on your swing style or your swing path tendency, all we're really

45
00:02:08.540 --> 00:02:09.200
trying to

46
00:02:09.200 --> 00:02:12.120
do is get the club face to be a little bit more close.

47
00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:18.840
Now it takes a little getting used to because not A, especially if you're

48
00:02:18.840 --> 00:02:20.160
hitting the draw

49
00:02:20.160 --> 00:02:24.510
shot, not many people visualize curve when you're looking at your distance wed

50
00:02:24.510 --> 00:02:24.980
ges.

51
00:02:24.980 --> 00:02:30.760
We tend to aim more or less at the flag or at our intended spot near the flag.

52
00:02:30.760 --> 00:02:35.010
And so imagining it curving into the end with a distance wedge can sometimes

53
00:02:35.010 --> 00:02:35.680
feel a little

54
00:02:35.680 --> 00:02:37.680
bit more awkward.

55
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:41.310
But the deal off thing in the club are getting a little bit more draw or a

56
00:02:41.310 --> 00:02:42.200
little bit more

57
00:02:42.200 --> 00:02:46.580
close club face is one viable way for giving you that five yards of extra

58
00:02:46.580 --> 00:02:47.520
distance.

59
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:55.730
So we will go ahead and hit kind of our standard distance wedge more or less

60
00:02:55.730 --> 00:02:56.640
kind of like

61
00:02:56.640 --> 00:02:57.640
this.

62
00:02:57.640 --> 00:03:01.560
And you'll see fairly, fairly straight for my ball flight.

63
00:03:01.560 --> 00:03:05.280
If I want to squeeze a little bit extra, this is going to come out just a tiny

64
00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:05.640
bit lower.

65
00:03:05.640 --> 00:03:08.640
I'm going to change my alignment stick a little bit to the right.

66
00:03:08.640 --> 00:03:12.500
So I'm going to get my club, my stance a little bit more close and the club

67
00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:13.080
face a little

68
00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:19.080
bit more close and then I'm going to make sure that I continue to close it

69
00:03:19.080 --> 00:03:19.800
during the

70
00:03:19.800 --> 00:03:23.550
swing and that's got a lower flight, a little bit more draw and typically that

71
00:03:23.550 --> 00:03:24.160
will give

72
00:03:24.160 --> 00:03:28.320
me about five yards of extra carry.

73
00:03:28.320 --> 00:03:32.670
Now if you have more of a kind of upper body dominant pole pattern, then I

74
00:03:32.670 --> 00:03:33.800
would recommend

75
00:03:33.800 --> 00:03:37.930
aiming the same way and just playing more of a pole rather than playing more of

76
00:03:37.930 --> 00:03:39.400
the draw.

77
00:03:39.400 --> 00:03:43.420
If you have more of kind of a stock draw as your technique, then one way to

78
00:03:43.420 --> 00:03:44.200
squeeze out

79
00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:47.000
a few extra yards is to close the club face.

80
00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.860
The most common times when I'll use this is if it's downwind, but I need a

81
00:03:50.860 --> 00:03:51.640
little extra

82
00:03:51.640 --> 00:03:52.640
yards.

83
00:03:52.640 --> 00:03:56.710
So I need the full speed to get a lot of spin, but I need a couple extra yards

84
00:03:56.710 --> 00:03:58.760
out of it.

85
00:03:58.760 --> 00:04:04.110
Out of the rough, if you're trying to hit it over something like over a tree

86
00:04:04.110 --> 00:04:04.760
where it's

87
00:04:04.760 --> 00:04:09.890
an advantage to hit the shorter club rather than trying to open the face of a

88
00:04:09.890 --> 00:04:11.400
longer club.

89
00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:16.800
That's another time and sometimes if there's a big false front and I want to

90
00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:18.160
make sure that

91
00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:22.040
I can take a little spin off, make sure I get it past the pin, but the longer

92
00:04:22.040 --> 00:04:22.600
club like

93
00:04:22.600 --> 00:04:24.240
maybe there's trouble over the green.

94
00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:27.840
So definitely an advanced skill, but something you should consider if you're

95
00:04:27.840 --> 00:04:28.560
really trying

96
00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:35.160
to figure out how to fill in a few of those gaps with your distance wedges.
