If you're up for it, aim for a target of hitting your distance wedges within 2 yards of your target distance
To control the distance your distance wedge flies at an elite level you'll need to master contact and launch first. But once you've got those two skills it's the length of swing and tempo that will help you dial in your distances. Learn how in this section.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.400
Welcome back, golfers, here we are with our third goal, a little typo there.
2
00:00:09.400 --> 00:00:13.660
Our third goal in the distance wedge section is learning how to control
3
00:00:13.660 --> 00:00:14.560
distance.
4
00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:19.290
So if we've built this stock swing where we're getting really solid contact and
5
00:00:19.290 --> 00:00:19.720
launching
6
00:00:19.720 --> 00:00:23.320
it through the trajectory, then we have to figure out how we're going to
7
00:00:23.320 --> 00:00:24.000
influence our
8
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.640
distance.
9
00:00:26.640 --> 00:00:31.080
I have up here that I want your three-quarter swing to be your baseline.
10
00:00:31.080 --> 00:00:36.720
So with all your wedges, your three-quarter swing kind of right up about chest
11
00:00:36.720 --> 00:00:37.480
height,
12
00:00:37.480 --> 00:00:42.250
kind of the hands, even with the shoulder or something like that, that's going
13
00:00:42.250 --> 00:00:42.600
to tend
14
00:00:42.600 --> 00:00:47.720
to have more of your kind of one hop and stop.
15
00:00:47.720 --> 00:00:55.360
It has to be it's one of the more like easy or classic kind of ideal loft
16
00:00:55.360 --> 00:00:56.720
delivery spin
17
00:00:56.720 --> 00:01:01.270
as well as spin, where when you do a little shorter, you have a tendency to not
18
00:01:01.270 --> 00:01:01.960
get enough
19
00:01:01.960 --> 00:01:03.600
spin and the ball rolls out.
20
00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:07.110
When you do a little bit longer, not only does your contact get a little bit
21
00:01:07.110 --> 00:01:08.000
worse, you tend
22
00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:11.940
to have a little bit harder time with trajectory control, and if you do have
23
00:01:11.940 --> 00:01:13.000
good trajectory,
24
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:15.960
you tend to have a little bit harder time controlling spin.
25
00:01:15.960 --> 00:01:18.660
So the three-quarter is going to be the baseline distance, and then you're
26
00:01:18.660 --> 00:01:20.400
going to have your
27
00:01:20.400 --> 00:01:24.060
nine to three, which is more of your low spin option, or your half swing, which
28
00:01:24.060 --> 00:01:24.400
is more
29
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:26.000
of your low spin option.
30
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:30.410
This is great either into the wind, or if you have a lot of green landing it
31
00:01:30.410 --> 00:01:31.080
towards
32
00:01:31.080 --> 00:01:35.960
the front and releasing it to the back, then we have our default option.
33
00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:40.090
This will tend to be a little bit more of a hit and hop and stop, or hit and
34
00:01:40.090 --> 00:01:40.760
just kind
35
00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:47.690
of barely release, and then the full swing option will tend to be our higher
36
00:01:47.690 --> 00:01:49.200
spin option.
37
00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:53.760
So this would be maybe if we have to bring the ball back, if we have enough
38
00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:54.520
club head
39
00:01:54.520 --> 00:02:00.090
speed, or if we just need the ball to hit and stop, say carry a bunker and land
40
00:02:00.090 --> 00:02:00.600
soft
41
00:02:00.600 --> 00:02:05.200
or something like that, we may default to the higher swing.
42
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:11.070
Now I caution a lot of my students that swinging hard at wedges rarely gives
43
00:02:11.070 --> 00:02:12.720
you more distance,
44
00:02:12.720 --> 00:02:18.000
so if you do have to have more distance in your elite level player, you
45
00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:18.480
probably want
46
00:02:18.480 --> 00:02:23.270
to figure out how to develop a little bit more of a draw swing, or almost like
47
00:02:23.270 --> 00:02:23.800
a hook
48
00:02:23.800 --> 00:02:25.760
release style.
49
00:02:25.760 --> 00:02:29.400
That's how we'll get our maximum distance if you ever need to squeeze an extra
50
00:02:29.400 --> 00:02:30.200
five yards
51
00:02:30.200 --> 00:02:35.440
or so out of your full swing wedge shots.
52
00:02:35.440 --> 00:02:38.520
With all of these, this is focusing primarily on length.
53
00:02:38.520 --> 00:02:42.310
The other two variables would be looking at contact location and loft,
54
00:02:42.310 --> 00:02:43.280
hopefully we've
55
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:48.560
taken that out of the equation because of the first two systems, so then the
56
00:02:48.560 --> 00:02:48.880
last one
57
00:02:48.880 --> 00:02:52.720
is going to be working on more rhythm swings in tempo.
58
00:02:52.720 --> 00:02:57.920
So with all of these shots, when you're looking at controlling distance, the
59
00:02:57.920 --> 00:02:58.360
length of swing
60
00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:02.380
as well as the tempo or your biggest influences, and we want to have tempo
61
00:03:02.380 --> 00:03:04.040
become more standardized,
62
00:03:04.040 --> 00:03:07.290
you might have two different options, but for the most part we want tempo to be
63
00:03:07.290 --> 00:03:07.640
pretty
64
00:03:07.640 --> 00:03:12.880
standardized, and then the major influence of how you're going to hit the ball
65
00:03:12.880 --> 00:03:12.880
further
66
00:03:12.880 --> 00:03:14.840
is by controlling the length of the swing.
67
00:03:14.840 --> 00:03:18.160
I'll show you how to do that as well as some games you can practice to kind of
68
00:03:18.160 --> 00:03:18.600
dial in
69
00:03:18.600 --> 00:03:21.320
the swing here in this section.
70
00:03:21.320 --> 00:03:28.040
So in the next session, we will cover analyzing your swing on video.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.400
Welcome back, golfers, here we are with our third goal, a little typo there.
2
00:00:09.400 --> 00:00:13.660
Our third goal in the distance wedge section is learning how to control
3
00:00:13.660 --> 00:00:14.560
distance.
4
00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:19.290
So if we've built this stock swing where we're getting really solid contact and
5
00:00:19.290 --> 00:00:19.720
launching
6
00:00:19.720 --> 00:00:23.320
it through the trajectory, then we have to figure out how we're going to
7
00:00:23.320 --> 00:00:24.000
influence our
8
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.640
distance.
9
00:00:26.640 --> 00:00:31.080
I have up here that I want your three-quarter swing to be your baseline.
10
00:00:31.080 --> 00:00:36.720
So with all your wedges, your three-quarter swing kind of right up about chest
11
00:00:36.720 --> 00:00:37.480
height,
12
00:00:37.480 --> 00:00:42.250
kind of the hands, even with the shoulder or something like that, that's going
13
00:00:42.250 --> 00:00:42.600
to tend
14
00:00:42.600 --> 00:00:47.720
to have more of your kind of one hop and stop.
15
00:00:47.720 --> 00:00:55.360
It has to be it's one of the more like easy or classic kind of ideal loft
16
00:00:55.360 --> 00:00:56.720
delivery spin
17
00:00:56.720 --> 00:01:01.270
as well as spin, where when you do a little shorter, you have a tendency to not
18
00:01:01.270 --> 00:01:01.960
get enough
19
00:01:01.960 --> 00:01:03.600
spin and the ball rolls out.
20
00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:07.110
When you do a little bit longer, not only does your contact get a little bit
21
00:01:07.110 --> 00:01:08.000
worse, you tend
22
00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:11.940
to have a little bit harder time with trajectory control, and if you do have
23
00:01:11.940 --> 00:01:13.000
good trajectory,
24
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:15.960
you tend to have a little bit harder time controlling spin.
25
00:01:15.960 --> 00:01:18.660
So the three-quarter is going to be the baseline distance, and then you're
26
00:01:18.660 --> 00:01:20.400
going to have your
27
00:01:20.400 --> 00:01:24.060
nine to three, which is more of your low spin option, or your half swing, which
28
00:01:24.060 --> 00:01:24.400
is more
29
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:26.000
of your low spin option.
30
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:30.410
This is great either into the wind, or if you have a lot of green landing it
31
00:01:30.410 --> 00:01:31.080
towards
32
00:01:31.080 --> 00:01:35.960
the front and releasing it to the back, then we have our default option.
33
00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:40.090
This will tend to be a little bit more of a hit and hop and stop, or hit and
34
00:01:40.090 --> 00:01:40.760
just kind
35
00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:47.690
of barely release, and then the full swing option will tend to be our higher
36
00:01:47.690 --> 00:01:49.200
spin option.
37
00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:53.760
So this would be maybe if we have to bring the ball back, if we have enough
38
00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:54.520
club head
39
00:01:54.520 --> 00:02:00.090
speed, or if we just need the ball to hit and stop, say carry a bunker and land
40
00:02:00.090 --> 00:02:00.600
soft
41
00:02:00.600 --> 00:02:05.200
or something like that, we may default to the higher swing.
42
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:11.070
Now I caution a lot of my students that swinging hard at wedges rarely gives
43
00:02:11.070 --> 00:02:12.720
you more distance,
44
00:02:12.720 --> 00:02:18.000
so if you do have to have more distance in your elite level player, you
45
00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:18.480
probably want
46
00:02:18.480 --> 00:02:23.270
to figure out how to develop a little bit more of a draw swing, or almost like
47
00:02:23.270 --> 00:02:23.800
a hook
48
00:02:23.800 --> 00:02:25.760
release style.
49
00:02:25.760 --> 00:02:29.400
That's how we'll get our maximum distance if you ever need to squeeze an extra
50
00:02:29.400 --> 00:02:30.200
five yards
51
00:02:30.200 --> 00:02:35.440
or so out of your full swing wedge shots.
52
00:02:35.440 --> 00:02:38.520
With all of these, this is focusing primarily on length.
53
00:02:38.520 --> 00:02:42.310
The other two variables would be looking at contact location and loft,
54
00:02:42.310 --> 00:02:43.280

taken that out of the equation because of the first two systems, so then the
56
00:02:48.560 --> 00:02:48.880

is going to be working on more rhythm swings in tempo.
58

So with all of these shots, when you're looking at controlling distance, the
59
00:02:57.920 --> 00:02:58.360
length of swing
60
00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:02.380
as well as the tempo or your biggest influences, and we want to have tempo
61

you might have two different options, but for the most part we want tempo to be

66
00:03:12.880 --> 00:03:14.840
is by controlling the length of the swing.
67
00:03:14.840 --> 00:03:18.160
I'll show you how to do that as well as some games you can practice to kind of

the swing here in this section.
70
00:03:21.320 --> 00:03:28.040
So in the next session, we will cover analyzing your swing on video.
