How To Keep the Head Back?

Just a quick preamble: . I'm 65, have played golf since my mid 20s and played to as low as a 4.5 handicap all with a very handsy swing. Gave up golf due to time 15 years ago, and came back about 2 years ago with a commitment to eliminate the hands, get shaft lean, lag etc. I have made great progress and up til recently, my ball striking has been the best ever. But looking at my video I was convinced I could and should get more shaft lean (I was probably at 6 degrees and I was going for 12). And over the next couple of weeks, I developed a horrible habit of being/getting blocked, can't get the clubface closed and its pretty much about my head moving in front of the ball (which I think was a way with my old swing to prevent it going left). With great concentration doing the 9-3 drills I can keep my head back and get in the proper (pro) impact position with my head back, good spine tilt and an extended lead leg. Unfortunately, it seems that every time I go for a little juice in my swing (adding clubhead speed), I am pushing off my rear leg and getting my head in front of the ball. I am guessing the reason this didn't bite me in my past life of playing golf is because I could correct it with my hands. Now that I have taken them out of the swing, its blocked or worse shanked.

Anyway, I am looking for drills that I can work that will help me keep my head back and allow the clubface to get closed all in the goal of making this natural and effortless without having to think about it.

Any thoughts you may have (or videos on your website etc) will be appreciated.

Hi John,

Welcome to the site and thanks for the question! In general, it's always easiest to analyze a swing if you post your swing with the question. Many golfers describe their swing different than it actual is (describing feels vs real).

I'd start with, if we want more shaft lean how are we going to get it? Where in the swing are we losing the shaft lean that we could have.
Diagnosing what happens when you swing harder vs regular is a good task. But trail leg push itself wouldn't cause the head to move in front of the ball. That's connected, but usually more related to how the core is working rather than the legs.

I agree on the goal, to get a swing where you don't have to think about it too much. Just a handful of swing thoughts to maintain (Jack Nicklaus thought most golfers end up with 3 to 5 swing keys and that seems to be my belief as well). But if you're working on multiple pieces, the head (aka pivot and spine work) and club face control (aka grip, wrist angles, shaft lean) then prioritizing can be tricky. That's where I can hopefully help. Once we have a diagnosis, we can pinpoint a few videos, but right now we need to get a better idea of what's the major issue.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler

Tyler, thanks for your response. After much trial and error (lots of error), I have finally isolated that I have been spinning my hips/rotating them too early and too hard in the downswing. This is causing me to get blocked. In some of the positions I have gotten myself into, even flipping the wrists will not save it. It appears that from that extreme rotated/open hips there is no way to get the clubface closed and I have hit way more shanks than I would ever care to admit!. I got here from looking at video of my swing and I was trying to get more shaft lean with my hips wide open at impact which is a position I was trying to copy from Dustin Johnson. Obviously I don't posses his athletic ability and have clearly massively overdone this (hip rotation, too much and too early).

My fix, which is not where it needs to be yet, is thinking about holding the hip rotation back and only allowing it as my upper body and arms create it just before contact. I am now able to do 10-2 drills where I do this. Unfortunately when I do a full swing, with a good amount of rotation on the backswing, I am still having a lot of trouble holding my hips back from rotating too early. I have also found that making my stance less wide, seems to limit my ability to over rotate the hips too early.

I will post some video when I get a chance to video some hopefully later today.

John, Spinning the shoulders is a very common problem. Feeling closed longer, or not spinning, can be a really good swing thought for many. Sounds like you're going down a good rabbit hole. I look forward to seeing the video to see how the feel is showing up in your swing.
Happy Golfing,
