Secondary Early Extension?

  By: Cecil S on May 1, 2025, 3:58 p.m.

Can you please take a look at my swing? I appear to move my head back a little from the target line into impact. Any suggestions to improve this or any suggestions in general?

Youtube link, too:

A lot of the best wedge players have a movement away from the ball during the downswing. It looks like this is a 60 degree wedge by the description?

If that's the case, I think the bigger issue is that your arms are a bit steep and your body is a little under rotated (arms steep, body more shallow). It would be interesting to see the swing from face on to see how you control low point with that pattern. Or is there a specific direction miss that you're trying to fix? or trajectory?

I frequently say that I always want to know the goal first before diving in too deep into an analysis.

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the quick response. I created a playlist with 6 videos (dtl and fo for 60, 7 iron, and driver). These were 6 different swings as I only have 1 decent camera right now, but the ball flights were all pretty tight draws. Where I would like to improve most is with 7 iron-driver. I tend to miss big with pushes and hooks with the longer clubs. That's where I'm losing most of my strokes. I don't have a handicap. I'm guessing I'm somewhere between a 1-4, but the goal is to get as good as I can.

The previous 60 degree swing I posted was with a HackMotion on, and I've been working hard on wrist mechanics as I tend to go into flexion early and pull the club inside (which you may see in these videos). When I wear the HackMotion and turn on biofeedback, I can feel the swing to the top and it produces much better start-lines. I've also been working with a TPI certified PT to get more mobility because I've had restricted mobility in the hips and thoracic region. I think I have the ability to turn more, but I need to relearn how to move. At GolfTec, I'm able to get to 90 degrees hip and 45 degrees shoulder turn when I focus on that. When I get the turn right, start-lines improve as well.

Lately things have been improving, but I don't really have a go-to shot with the driver. I can't rely totally on bringing it back with the draw (I noticed recently I really struggle with this in the cooler temps). After working with HackMotion and a PT, I can finally hit a decent fade, but I tend to spin it a bit too much.

Hi Cecil,

I tend to like to have a swing goal as well as a performance goal. The picture I would want to change is the follow through side of the puzzle. It looks more like a baseball release to me which is usually linked to club face inconsistency. I think there are lots of good components in the swing, but the release through the ball has less lead arm stability than I like to see. It's usually more important for the longer clubs, which seems to fit your pattern as well. Can you do a L to I drill and post the video here. Youtube is fine, but it's harder for me to do frame by frame to see details, youtubes frame by frame playback lags too much.

Happy Golfing,
