Grip sizing

  By: John C on Oct. 26, 2020, 10:08 a.m.

For years conventional wisdom was smaller grips promoted more active hands. Technology has shown many things we "conventionally" thought are not true. Instruction seems to be moving to a more stable club face and more body rotation through impact. Would players then be advised to use larger grips to compliment body rotation and diminish the Rate of Closure? Is there any objective information on this?
Thanks,

Hi John,

I haven't seen any data on it specifically. Mechanically, a larger grip could restrict radial deviation, but wouldn't have a big influence on flexion/extension or pronatation/supination. I put a number of my older students in larger grips to help with comfort. As far as how much it changes ROC, I'm not sure. The components that I've seen that change ROC the most is changing the body position at impact.
