Two Goals of Pre-shot Routine

The two goals of a Pre-Shot routine are to get clarity on what shot you want to hit and to have clarity on exactly what the entire swing is going to feel like. If you lack clarity on either of those two aspects, then you are NOT committed to the shot.

Many times, poor shots happen from poor mechanics. But poor mechanics can occur when you have poor commitment. Now you know that poor mechanics really means poor clarity to the shot!

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This content video is the two goals of a pre-shot routine.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:11,000
So while it's great to have solid mechanics, it's just as helpful to have a solid routine

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:13,000
or a solid mental game approach.

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:17,000
So in this video, I'm going to cover the two main aspects that you want to make sure

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:19,000
happen in your pre-shot routine.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:24,000
Many golfers come back from either a trip or a tournament and talk about how their mechanics

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:25,000
broke down.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:29,000
And I'll usually talk them through these two key components, just to make sure that they

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
are paying attention to the process as well as the swing mechanics.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:39,000
Because oftentimes, if you have a poor commitment to the shot, if you have really poor

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:46,000
focus over the ball and you hit a bad shot, it wasn't so much that you had bad swing mechanics.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:53,000
It was that you lacked the emotional commitment to hitting a good shot and therefore the

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:54,000
mechanics broke down.

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:59,000
Because if you're not totally committed, you can have extra attention, you could have

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:04,000
little extra triggers or kind of sway movements to make yourself feel more comfortable.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:08,000
There's a lot of things they can go wrong if you're not committed to the shot.

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:14,000
So in order to get more committed to the shot, the pre-shot routine is designed to cover

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:21,000
what shot do I want to hit and what am I going to experience or feel over the golf ball?

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:23,000
And I find that many golfers think through number one.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:26,000
So they will figure out what shot do they want to hit?

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:30,000
They'll stand back here and they'll say, okay, I want it to start over there or so I want

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:32,000
it to start at that tree.

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:35,000
It's going to have a little bit of a draw to it.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:39,000
I'm going to swing the club at about 85, 80 percent.

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:42,000
So it's going to land at this part of the green, maybe roll out.

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:49,000
They'll get pretty detailed as far as factoring in wind and elevation and what club to hit,

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:54,000
what trajectory, all the key components they go into clearly picking out a shot.

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:59,000
But then they completely fail on the second piece, which is what is it going to feel

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:03,000
like or what is the experience going to be like?

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:10,000
So basically, when you see tour professionals taking their practice wings, they're creating

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:14,000
the phrase that I really like came from Jordan's speed.

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:19,000
Say, many at the ball feel of what the ball flight will feel like.

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:24,000
So basically, it's a many at the ball feel of what's my body going to feel like?

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:26,000
What are my hands going to feel like?

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:30,000
What's it going to be like when I execute the shot that hits the ball flight that I want

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:32,000
to hit?

00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:38,000
And it's very important that you get a hundred percent clear on what you think it's going

00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:40,000
to feel like.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:46,000
And then you stick to that commitment all the way through executing the shot or the whole

00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:48,000
time you're in the play box.

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:55,000
So the word that gets thrown around a lot is you need to be committed to the shot.

00:02:55,000 --> 00:03:00,000
But what I really think that that means is you need to have clarity on what's going to

00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:01,000
happen during the shot.

00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:02,000
What's the swing going to feel like?

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:04,000
What's the experience going to be like?

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:07,000
And then get up there and just kind of execute.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:12,000
And if you're intellectually committed to the shot that you're going to hit, but you go

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:16,000
up to the ball kind of wondering, well, what is this going to feel like?

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:17,000
Am I going to focus on my arms?

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:19,000
Am I going to focus on my hips?

00:03:19,000 --> 00:03:22,000
Am I going to focus on low point?

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:27,000
If you haven't made a hundred percent clear commitment to what you're going to focus on when

00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:32,000
you execute the shot, then in my mind you're not committed to the shot yet.

00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:37,000
It's natural that you are going to have a breakdown of mechanics when you're lacking

00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:39,000
a hundred percent commitment.

00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:44,000
So when you're on the course and you're going through your pre shot routine and I do

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:49,000
recommend that you practice your pre shot routine on the range at least some part of the

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:52,000
time, especially as you're getting closer and closer to a tournament.

00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:56,000
But let's say you're on the course, you've got the feel of the shot or you got the idea

00:03:56,000 --> 00:03:57,000
of the shot.

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:03,000
You're going to take enough practice swings so that you can get a clear feel.

00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:05,000
That's what it's going to feel like when the club hits the turf.

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:08,000
That's what it's going to feel like when the club hits the ball.

00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:14,000
You want this mini strong sensation of what the swing is going to feel like and then your

00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:26,000
goal is to keep distractions away and just focus on executing that same feel.

00:04:26,000 --> 00:04:33,000
If you execute that feel, then it's a good shot regardless of where the outcome is.

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:36,000
But most of the time, if you have a clear feeling of what it's going to be like over

00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:41,000
the ball, connect it to the ball flight you want to hit and you execute that feel, you're

00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:43,000
likely going to hit a really good shot.
