1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000
This concept video is read every lie.

2
00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:08.040
So when I do playing lessons, which we're in the middle of the season, so I'm

3
00:00:08.040 --> 00:00:09.000
doing them a lot more,

4
00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:13.000
when I do playing lessons, one of the first things that I'm teaching people

5
00:00:13.000 --> 00:00:17.000
is how to evaluate the lie and how that influences shot selection.

6
00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000
So here I've got the whole, actually, is a dog like left,

7
00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.000
but I'm aiming over these trees in this particular video.

8
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.760
You can see that the ball would be well below my feet in this particular stance

9
00:00:28.760 --> 00:00:29.000
.

10
00:00:29.000 --> 00:00:33.000
This is kind of pretty close to as exaggerated,

11
00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:36.400
because if we get too much more than that, the ball's not going to be able to

12
00:00:36.400 --> 00:00:37.000
stay on it.

13
00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:41.000
So this is going to be close to the ball below my feet as much as I can,

14
00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:46.000
and if I spun around the opposite way, you'll see that the ball's going to be

15
00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:48.000
well above my feet.

16
00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:55.000
So the tricky question is, at some point, right, if I had the ball well below

17
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:56.000
my feet like this,

18
00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.330
or if I had it way above my feet like that, obviously that's going to influence

19
00:00:59.330 --> 00:01:00.000
the shot a ton.

20
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:03.000
Well, does it matter on, say, a T-box?

21
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:07.000
If the T-box slightly crowned, if it changes a couple degrees?

22
00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:11.070
My stance is, yes, that even the brain's going to make adjustments for those

23
00:01:11.070 --> 00:01:12.000
few degrees.

24
00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.000
So I emphasize that you want to read every lie.

25
00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:18.400
I've got these two different kind of exaggerated scenarios so that we can talk

26
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:19.000
about them,

27
00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:23.410
and you can do a smaller version when you're looking at your own kind of subtle

28
00:01:23.410 --> 00:01:24.000
shots.

29
00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.980
So one of the simple things is when the ball is below my feet or when the ball

30
00:01:29.980 --> 00:01:31.000
is above my feet,

31
00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:35.000
when I have a non-traditional stance because of what will happen in my ankles,

32
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.000
it's going to make it harder for me to power the swing with my lower body.

33
00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:44.000
So what I have to do is I have to try to use my core or use my arms.

34
00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:51.000
I have to try to kind of maintain a lot of my alignments in geometry without

35
00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:52.000
using my lower body

36
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.220
as the main power source because what happens is when the ball is below my feet

37
00:01:56.220 --> 00:01:57.000
like this,

38
00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:02.000
my ankle now has more range of motion for me to kind of rotate that lower body,

39
00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:05.730
but what will happen is if I start to shift even a little bit because of the

40
00:02:05.730 --> 00:02:07.000
ball being below my feet

41
00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:12.000
and my weight being more towards my toes, I'm going to tend to fall over.

42
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:18.460
The opposite is when I'm here, I could use my lower body a whole lot more for

43
00:02:18.460 --> 00:02:19.000
power,

44
00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:22.000
but the problem is because the ball is above my feet,

45
00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:27.000
I'm already close to my max amount of ankle dorsiflexion,

46
00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:33.000
or basically I can't really bend my knees too much without going up on my toes.

47
00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:37.410
So when the ball is above my feet, it's more of a physical restriction that

48
00:02:37.410 --> 00:02:39.000
forces me to swing with my arms.

49
00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:44.490
When the ball is below my feet, it's more of a balance restriction that tends

50
00:02:44.490 --> 00:02:46.000
to force me to power it more

51
00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:51.000
with the upper body or with the arms. So in general, I'm going to have to have

52
00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:53.000
kind of a little adjustment

53
00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:57.400
that I'm going to make based on how much contribution I'm going to get from my

54
00:02:57.400 --> 00:02:58.000
lower body.

55
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:04.260
Now, let's talk about the shot possibilities. So when the ball is below my feet

56
00:03:04.260 --> 00:03:06.000
like this, right,

57
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:09.660
it means that the ground is kind of tilted away from me like that and the golf

58
00:03:09.660 --> 00:03:11.000
ball is sitting here.

59
00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:15.510
And most to try to come from the inside, it wouldn't work too well because now

60
00:03:15.510 --> 00:03:18.000
the ground is going to be in the way.

61
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.780
So I'm going to err on wanting to have a path that's going to be slightly

62
00:03:22.780 --> 00:03:24.000
outside the end

63
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000
so that I don't make contact with the ground before the golf ball.

64
00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:32.470
So if I have an outside to end path, then that gives me the options of playing

65
00:03:32.470 --> 00:03:36.000
a fade, a pull, or a pull draw.

66
00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.200
Right, and I could over fade, over draw, but those three basic categories. I'm

67
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:42.000
going to have my path going left.

68
00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:46.190
If the face is square to the, or open to that path, it's going to curve back to

69
00:03:46.190 --> 00:03:47.000
the right.

70
00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.700
If it's square to it, I'm going to hit a pull, and if it's close to it, I'm

71
00:03:50.700 --> 00:03:52.000
going to hit a draw.

72
00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.960
So one of the things is I'll see a student who might be working on trying to

73
00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:57.000
hit more of a draw,

74
00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:00.000
and they'll come up to this shot and they'll still try to hit a draw.

75
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.420
And I'll say, "Well, the ground is taking away a big part of your margin of

76
00:04:04.420 --> 00:04:07.000
error, so why don't we play the safer shot?

77
00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:11.000
Why don't we play what the lie is dictating? Why don't we try more of a fade?"

78
00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:16.000
The opposite is true when the ball is above my feet like this.

79
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.900
The harder thing is if I get slightly on the outside, I'm going to tend to

80
00:04:19.900 --> 00:04:22.000
strike the ground before the golf ball.

81
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:27.120
I've got a lot of room to come from the inside and not hit the golf ball, so I

82
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:30.000
'm going to err on having more of a path that's into out.

83
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:37.000
Now, with an in-out path, I can either hit a push, a push fade, or a nice draw,

84
00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000
possibly even an over-drawer hook.

85
00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:44.850
So the ball being above my feet and the ball being below my feet tends to open

86
00:04:44.850 --> 00:04:47.000
and close the club face.

87
00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:50.820
So when the ball's above my feet, that tends to close the club face, which is

88
00:04:50.820 --> 00:04:55.000
part of the reason why it's going to be more likely I'm going to hit a ball

89
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:57.000
that curves more to the left.

90
00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:01.420
And the reason is if you review the club face closing, when the shaft lowers

91
00:05:01.420 --> 00:05:05.000
like this, the face is actually pointing to the left,

92
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:10.090
where in this situation here, when the shaft raises, it's actually pointing to

93
00:05:10.090 --> 00:05:11.000
the right.

94
00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:18.220
So that adjusts the shot selections. So if I tend to be kind of really lower

95
00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:21.540
body dominant and I have a ball below my feet, that's going to be a real tough

96
00:05:21.540 --> 00:05:22.000
shot.

97
00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.070
If I tend to be more upper body dominant and the ball is above my feet, that's

98
00:05:27.070 --> 00:05:30.000
going to tend to be more of a tough shot.

99
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.410
So we can use these lies to help adjust what you're working on, but the big

100
00:05:34.410 --> 00:05:39.880
thing is even on T-shots, I want you to be kind of aware of what's going on

101
00:05:39.880 --> 00:05:45.000
with the lie and what kind of shot that's going to dictate for you.

102
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:50.080
So, for example, up here, it's a little bit more of just the ball would be

103
00:05:50.080 --> 00:05:55.160
subtly below my feet, but if I sense that, I may still want to play more of a

104
00:05:55.160 --> 00:05:59.760
cut shot and not necessarily try to hit a draw because I would be more likely

105
00:05:59.760 --> 00:06:02.000
to hit a pull if I try to hit a draw.

106
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:06.610
So, read the lies, know what they're going to do for you. If it's significantly

107
00:06:06.610 --> 00:06:11.270
above or below, you're not going to be able to use your lower body as well. You

108
00:06:11.270 --> 00:06:14.580
're going to have to find out a way to kind of get the same or similar align

109
00:06:14.580 --> 00:06:20.000
ments, but using the upper body and the arms is more of your power source.

110
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:23.960
So, give that a try. If you have any specific issues relating to your swing or

111
00:06:23.960 --> 00:06:27.680
your swing faults or swing pattern, please let us know and we can help you

112
00:06:27.680 --> 00:06:31.370
figure out which would be the easiest shot selections for you to use given

113
00:06:31.370 --> 00:06:33.000
different situations.

00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:33.000
or basically I can't really bend my knees too much without going up on my toes.

47
00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:37.410
So when the ball is above my feet, it's more of a physical restriction that

48
00:02:37.410 --> 00:02:39.000
forces me to swing with my arms.

49
00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:44.490
When the ball is below my feet, it's more of a balance restriction that tends

50
00:02:44.490 --> 00:02:46.000
to force me to power it more

51
00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:51.000
with the upper body or with the arms. So in general, I'm going to have to have

52
00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:53.000
kind of a little adjustment

53
00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:57.400
that I'm going to make based on how much contribution I'm going to get from my

54
00:02:57.400 --> 00:02:58.000
lower body.

55
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:04.260
Now, let's talk about the shot possibilities. So when the ball is below my feet

56
00:03:04.260 --> 00:03:06.000
like this, right,

57
00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:09.660
it means that the ground is kind of tilted away from me like that and the golf

58
00:03:09.660 --> 00:03:11.000
ball is sitting here.

59
00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:15.510
And most to try to come from the inside, it wouldn't work too well because now

60
00:03:15.510 --> 00:03:18.000
the ground is going to be in the way.

61
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.780
So I'm going to err on wanting to have a path that's going to be slightly

62
00:03:22.780 --> 00:03:24.000
outside the end

63
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000
so that I don't make contact with the ground before the golf ball.

64
00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:32.470
So if I have an outside to end path, then that gives me the options of playing

65
00:03:32.470 --> 00:03:36.000
a fade, a pull, or a pull draw.

66
00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.200
Right, and I could over fade, over draw, but those three basic categories. I'm

67
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:42.000
going to have my path going left.

68
00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:46.190
If the face is square to the, or open to that path, it's going to curve back to

69
00:03:46.190 --> 00:03:47.000
the right.

70
00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:50.700
If it's square to it, I'm going to hit a pull, and if it's close to it, I'm

71
00:03:50.700 --> 00:03:52.000
going to hit a draw.

72
00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:55.960
So one of the things is I'll see a student who might be working on trying to

73
00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:57.000
hit more of a draw,

74
00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:00.000
and they'll come up to this shot and they'll still try to hit a draw.

75
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.420
And I'll say, "Well, the ground is taking away a big part of your margin of

76
00:04:04.420 --> 00:04:07.000
error, so why don't we play the safer shot?

77
00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:11.000
Why don't we play what the lie is dictating? Why don't we try more of a fade?"

78
00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:16.000
The opposite is true when the ball is above my feet like this.

79
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.900
The harder thing is if I get slightly on the outside, I'm going to tend to

80
00:04:19.900 --> 00:04:22.000
strike the ground before the golf ball.

81
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:27.120
I've got a lot of room to come from the inside and not hit the golf ball, so I

82
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:30.000
'm going to err on having more of a path that's into out.

83
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:37.000
Now, with an in-out path, I can either hit a push, a push fade, or a nice draw,

84
00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.000
possibly even an over-drawer hook.

85
00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:44.850
So the ball being above my feet and the ball being below my feet tends to open

86
00:04:44.850 --> 00:04:47.000
and close the club face.

87
00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:50.820
So when the ball's above my feet, that tends to close the club face, which is

88
00:04:50.820 --> 00:04:55.000
part of the reason why it's going to be more likely I'm going to hit a ball

89
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:57.000
that curves more to the left.

90
00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:01.420
And the reason is if you review the club face closing, when the shaft lowers

91
00:05:01.420 --> 00:05:05.000
like this, the face is actually pointing to the left,

92
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:10.090
where in this situation here, when the shaft raises, it's actually pointing to

93
00:05:10.090 --> 00:05:11.000
the right.

94
00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:18.220
So that adjusts the shot selections. So if I tend to be kind of really lower

95
00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:21.540
body dominant and I have a ball below my feet, that's going to be a real tough

96
00:05:21.540 --> 00:05:22.000
shot.

97
00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.070
If I tend to be more upper body dominant and the ball is above my feet, that's

98
00:05:27.070 --> 00:05:30.000
going to tend to be more of a tough shot.

99
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.410
So we can use these lies to help adjust what you're working on, but the big

100
00:05:34.410 --> 00:05:39.880
thing is even on T-shots, I want you to be kind of aware of what's going on

101
00:05:39.880 --> 00:05:45.000
with the lie and what kind of shot that's going to dictate for you.

102
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:50.080
So, for example, up here, it's a little bit more of just the ball would be

103
00:05:50.080 --> 00:05:55.160
subtly below my feet, but if I sense that, I may still want to play more of a

104
00:05:55.160 --> 00:05:59.760
cut shot and not necessarily try to hit a draw because I would be more likely

105
00:05:59.760 --> 00:06:02.000
to hit a pull if I try to hit a draw.

106
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:06.610
So, read the lies, know what they're going to do for you. If it's significantly

107
00:06:06.610 --> 00:06:11.270
above or below, you're not going to be able to use your lower body as well. You

108
00:06:11.270 --> 00:06:14.580
're going to have to find out a way to kind of get the same or similar align

109
00:06:14.580 --> 00:06:20.000
ments, but using the upper body and the arms is more of your power source.

110
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:23.960
So, give that a try. If you have any specific issues relating to your swing or

111
00:06:23.960 --> 00:06:27.680
your swing faults or swing pattern, please let us know and we can help you

112
00:06:27.680 --> 00:06:31.370
figure out which would be the easiest shot selections for you to use given

113
00:06:31.370 --> 00:06:33.000
different situations.
