9-3 Drill going Left

9-3 Drill going Left

  By: John B on April 23, 2025, 12:08 p.m.

I am new to hackmotion and this academy. I am practicing the 9-3 drill, focusing on getting left wrist flexion which I am accomplishing. But everything is at least 10 yards left (with drawspin). Seems like if add any zip to it, it will often go 30 yards left. I have a launch monitor and I am getting good delofting of the clubface (dynamic loft is 10 or more degrees below the loft of my club). Even when I focus on early and aggressive hip rotation, I am still at best 7-10 yards left.

Would love any thoughts. Thx

After hitting balls non stop left for probably longer than I should have (contact was great as was my shaft lean), I started to lengthen my backswing and follow through. When I did this I naturally added a shoulder turn and bingo, everything started going straight with a 2 yd draw. When I went back to the 9-3 drill, when I made sure I had some shoulder turn, going left was eliminated here as well.

Hi John,

I'm glad you were able to solve your own issue. Solving your own problems is way more sustainable than having someone tell you exactly what to do. It's why my tagline for the website is, "you are your own best golf coach".

But talking through your scenario, usually if you're getting too much speed from straightening your trail arm or pulling with your lead arm, then the clubface will be overly shut. If you add more body turn (which you started out thinking was hips but learned for you it's more about your shoulders) that will delay the closing of the clubface. You still get the benefits of a closing the face, but you don't hit the pull.

Good job figuring it out. Keep pushing the length and effort, until you get the same ball flight with your full swing.

Happy golfing,
Tyler
