Where to Focus and how?

  By: Matthew D on Sept. 6, 2025, 8:45 p.m.

My flight issue is I cut across on the bottom a lot, pulling with my shoulder and flipping or early release probably because my face is too open, which it is.

In this practice session I was focusing more on not flipping and having a smoother transition through impact, and closing face more, pulling through from body more than arms, I also used a stronger grip.

First I did one arm swings to try to help get the feel, then partial swing and fuller swing everything at slow speed. Short Video of each FO, DTL included.

Also working on takeaway more outside, steeper at top, turning body through more at impact.

I want to drop my Hands / arms more and earlier to shallow but am not sure exactly how or when to do it in relation to feel of hips moving etc.

I know I can work on a lot at once, guidance on what to focus on and how would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Matthew,

When deciding what to work on, I usually go off of how a swing looks, how a swing feels, and how a swing performs. I almost always start with some type of performance goal before recommending any technical change. It's more important for better swings then it is for new golfers, but it's still a habit that I think is good to start early.

I think there are a number of good things in your swing. Your impact position isn't too bad.

The single arm drills are way more effective if you are actually hitting a ball rather than making practice swings. Also, I usually use them when a golfer is struggling with the arm motions during the release. Your impact position looks fairly solid. So I would like to get a clear goal before deciding how to achieve it. What are you hoping to improve?

You did mention, "I want to drop my Hands / arms more and earlier to shallow but am not sure exactly how or when to do it in relation to feel of hips moving etc."

I think that getting your hips moving and working on sequencing is a good place to focus, but I don't think you need to have much more dropping of the hands. To me it looks like you could use some more depth, but the angle of the club and arms doesn't appear too steep in transition. It looks a little upper body dominant, but overall there are a number of good components to build on.

Happy golfing,
Tyler
