Transitioning from Arm Dominant to Body Driven Swing

  By: Gabriel M on Sept. 17, 2025, 12:51 p.m.

I have an arm dominant swing, I am working hard to use the body to lead my arms and then club. I've had some successful range sessions where I truly do feel the effortless power but can't get it to stick too well. My personal assessment is I have trouble staying patient during the downswing and my arms outpace my body rotation. I can feel the body motion, and I have the rope and do the drill with it. It affects all dimensions of my game from wedges, irons, long irons and driver.

Any swing thoughts or additional videos here to make the arms a bit more passive and let the body drive the swing?

Hi Garbriel,

I think you're not alone with struggling to develop more of a body vs arm driven swing. In theory, they have to work together. I like the analogy of pushing a shopping cart. When you push the shopping cart, you use your legs/feet, your core, and your arms in concert. What you feel might vary person to person, but you're using your whole body. If you can get that feeling with the rope drills, then the trick is figuring out what's blocking it from occurring in your actual swing.

Usually it's related to the brain not believing you would make contact or hit it straight without using the arms as much. So I'd investigate that idea more. On a hinge and hold 9 to 3, if you dont' use your arms, can you execute a shot? How does it look on video?

One alternative drill I use frequently to make it feel more body driven is rhythm swings. https://www.golfsmartacademy.com/golf-instruction/four-ball-rhythm-drill/ If you are too dominant with the arms, it's hard to swing back and be ready for the next ball. Or it would feel like it took a lot of effort/energy.

Happy Golfing,
Tyler

Good stuff. I will give the rhythm drill a shot tonight and work on some hinge and holds and see if it unlocks a feel/swing thought.

Thank you!
