Casting with HackMotion

Hi Tyler,

When I am working on lead hand ulnar deviation/flexion during the downswing the HackMotion keeps stating I am casting. The warning is "decrease wrist angle". When I "decrease the wrist angle" I am basically holding on to the wrist angles all the way to impact....at least this is what the feeling is.
Maybe I need more body rotation? I did get a "more chest rotation" warning....

Hi Dave,

I'll have to play around with the casting parameter. When they and I initially discussed it, they said that it was not purely a measure of ulnar deviation. But I can play around with it and try to investigate it further. Do you have a face on video and a graph or hackmotion capture we can reference?

Hi Tyler,

Here is a graph. If I start the ulnar deviation later in the downswing in conjunction with more chest rotation the HackMotion will not pick up the casting.

Hi Dave,

Do you have a video, preferably face on of the swing? I'm guessing that the hips aren't leading enough or long enough. But it would be easier to tell with a video to accompany what the wrists are doing.

Hi Tyler
Did you ever establish if the casting training could interfere with your beliefs on the unhinge in the release.
I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere.

Hi Mark,

No apologies needed. As far as the cast and the ulnar deviation, it shouldn't, but it might require looking at the whole picture, not just the casting of the wrists. Many tour pros have early ulnar deviation with the lead wrist, but don't have a cast because of the extension of the trail wrist and sequence of the body. I have a student who was struggling with the casting, by working on body rotation, he was able to get his numbers in range. The wrists are part of the chain, but a cast involves the shoulders and power source as well as a wrist timing error. So fixing it usually requires working on multiple pieces simultaneously.
