Rate of closure is one of the most misunderstood ideas in swing analysis. Many golfers try to judge it by looking at a single follow-through position and deciding whether the clubface looked “rolled,” “held off,” or somewhere in between. The problem is that this can be misleading. Two players can arrive at a similar-looking position after impact while having very different clubface behavior through the strike. If you want to understand your ball flight—especially pushes, blocks, and the patterns tied to face control—you need to know when to look and what to look for on video.

The key is simple: don’t judge rate of closure mainly from after impact. Instead, study how the clubface is oriented just before impact. That gives you a much better read on how quickly the face is rotating through the hitting area and why your start lines look the way they do.

What Rate of Closure Actually Means

Rate of closure refers to how quickly the clubface is rotating closed through the impact zone. In practical terms, it helps explain how the face moves from being open relative to the arc to being more square or closed as the club approaches and passes the ball.

This matters because clubface orientation is the biggest influence on where the ball starts. If your face is too open at impact, the ball tends to start right. If it closes rapidly late in the downswing, timing becomes more difficult. If it closes more gradually, the strike can look more stable—but that does not automatically mean one style is better than another. The important part is understanding your pattern.

Some players have a higher rate of closure, meaning the face stays more open deeper into the downswing and then rotates more quickly near impact. Others have a lower rate of closure, meaning the face is already oriented more toward the ball or target earlier, so it has less rotating left to do through impact.

Why the Follow-Through Can Fool You

A common way golfers try to analyze face rotation is by comparing two frames:

At first glance, that seems logical. If the clubface looks more rolled over after impact, you might assume the player had a faster rate of closure. If it looks more held off, you might assume the player had a slower one. But that shortcut often breaks down.

Two golfers can reach a very similar follow-through position while getting there in completely different ways. One player may rotate the face aggressively right before impact. Another may have less face rotation through impact but then show more rotation after the ball is gone. The end picture can look similar even though the impact-zone behavior was not.

That is why a single post-impact frame is not enough evidence. It tells you where the club ended up, not necessarily how it behaved through the strike.

Why post-impact positions vary so much

There are several reasons the club can look different after impact without truly reflecting the player’s rate of closure at the strike:

Why Strike Location Changes the Picture

If you hit the ball away from the clubhead’s center of mass, the head can twist noticeably. That twist can create what looks like a held-off or rolled-over release even if the player’s true rate of closure was something else.

This is especially important with amateur swings. A toe strike, for example, can alter how the clubface appears after impact. Many golfers with a higher rate of closure also tend to produce more toe-side misses, which can exaggerate the visual effect. A low-face strike can create its own distortion as well.

So if you freeze a video after impact and make your judgment there, you may actually be analyzing impact physics rather than swing intent.

That’s one of the biggest reasons this concept matters. If you misdiagnose your release pattern, you can end up trying to “fix” the wrong thing.

The Better Place to Look: Just Before Impact

If you want a more reliable read on rate of closure, study the clubface approaching impact, not after it. The closer you can get to impact while still seeing the face clearly, the better.

A very useful checkpoint is when the club is roughly in front of your trail foot. At that moment, ask a simple question:

Is the face still pointing noticeably out to the right, or has it already started orienting more toward the ball and target?

If the face is still pointed well out to the right at that stage, you are more likely looking at a higher rate of closure. The face still has a lot of closing left to do before impact, so that rotation must happen later and faster.

If the face is already oriented more toward the ball or target by then, that suggests a lower rate of closure. The face has less rotation left to complete, so the closure rate through impact can be lower.

This gives you a much more useful diagnostic than looking at a follow-through pose.

Why Some “Held-Off” Swings Are Not Truly Low Closure

One of the classic mistakes in golf instruction is assuming that a held-off follow-through automatically means low rate of closure. It can, but not always.

A player may look as if the face is quiet after impact, yet still have had a moderate or even fairly high closure rate through the strike. The reason is that the club can square up late, then the body and arm structure can create a controlled-looking exit.

This is why you should avoid labeling swings purely by style. A player with a soft, abbreviated, or held-off finish may still be rotating the face more than you think near impact. Another player with a more traditional release may actually be closing the face less through the strike.

The lesson is simple: appearance after impact is not the same as behavior through impact.

Use the Right Camera Angle

Camera angle makes a big difference when you are trying to judge clubface rotation.

Face-on view is often the most practical

For most golfers, the face-on view is one of the best ways to evaluate rate of closure. From this angle, you can judge how much of the clubface is visible as the club approaches the ball.

As the club gets near your trail foot, look at how much face you can still see:

This gives you a practical visual benchmark without needing a launch monitor or 3D motion capture.

Overhead view may be best, but it’s rare

An overhead view can be even better for understanding how the face is rotating in space. The problem is that most golfers do not have access to that setup. Unless you have a studio environment, it is usually unrealistic.

That is why face-on becomes the most useful real-world option.

Down-the-line can be helpful, but it has limits

The down-the-line view can still provide clues, but it is easier to misread. Perspective can disguise how far the club is from the body, how much the arms are extending, and how the face is actually orienting in three-dimensional space.

If one player reaches a wider arc earlier through the strike, the club may be farther from the body even if the shaft appears to be at a similar angle on camera. That can make the face rotation look slower or different than it really is.

So if you are using down-the-line video, be cautious. It is better than guessing, but not as trustworthy as face-on for this purpose.

How Arm Action Influences Closure Rate

Another useful idea is that clubface closure is not only about wrist roll. In some swings, the face appears to square more because of how the trail arm straightens and how the club moves into its widest point.

When the trail arm straightens earlier, the swing can reach its low point or widest point sooner. That changes the club’s resistance to twisting and can allow the face to rotate more rapidly through the strike zone.

This is one reason a player may not look overly handsy, yet still have a high rate of closure. The face is not always being squared by an obvious forearm roll. Sometimes it is happening through the geometry of the motion—how the arm extends, how the club exits, and when the arc widens.

That matters because many golfers only look for wrist action. But a release pattern is often a whole-arm and whole-club system, not just a hand motion.

Why This Matters for Ball Flight

If you struggle with pushes or inconsistent start lines, understanding your rate of closure can help you make sense of the pattern.

A player with a higher rate of closure often leaves the face looking more open later into the downswing. If the timing is late, the ball can start right. If the face catches up in time, the shot may start straighter or even turn over. That can create a pattern where your misses vary between pushes and hooks.

A player with a lower rate of closure often gets the face organized earlier. That can reduce timing demands through impact, but it may also pair with different face-to-path tendencies and different miss patterns.

The point is not to decide that high or low is “correct.” The point is to understand what your face is doing so you can connect it to your ball flight. Once you see that relationship, your video analysis becomes much more useful.

A Better Way to Classify Your Swing

You probably will not be able to assign yourself an exact numerical rate of closure from smartphone video alone. But you can usually sort your swing into a broad category:

That kind of classification is often enough to improve your diagnosis. It helps explain why one player’s push miss looks different from another’s, and why two swings with similar finishes can produce very different contact and start-line patterns.

How to Apply This in Practice

If you want to use this concept productively, keep your analysis simple and focused.

  1. Film your swing from face-on. Make sure the camera is stable and centered well enough to see the club approaching impact.
  2. Pause the video just before impact. Look around the moment the club is near or in front of your trail foot.
  3. Check how much of the clubface is visible. If the face still looks very open to the camera, you likely have more closure left to do.
  4. Compare that look to your ball flight. Are your pushes coming from a face that is simply too open too late? Are your two-way misses tied to a late, fast closure pattern?
  5. Avoid judging your swing by the finish alone. A held-off or rolled-over look after impact does not tell the whole story.
  6. Pay attention to strike location. If you are missing the center of the face, post-impact visuals can be deceptive.

As you practice, try to develop a more critical eye. Instead of asking, “Does my release look good?” ask, “When is my face getting organized relative to impact?” That question is much more useful.

The more accurately you can identify whether your face is closing early, late, or somewhere in between, the easier it becomes to understand your shot pattern. And once you understand the pattern, you can make better decisions about what actually needs to change.
