Correct Casting by Swinging Under the Shaft Drill

After this video, you'll be able to:

  • Identify when your swing path is too outside-in and correct it
  • Feel the proper sequencing of your body to improve downswing mechanics
  • Develop a better understanding of how to swing under the shaft for solid contact

This drill helps you understand the importance of swing path by visualizing the correct club movement in relation to a shaft. You'll learn how to avoid casting and develop a more efficient swing sequence.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.900
This drill is swing under the shaft and this is for helping the cast or upper

2
00:00:04.900 --> 00:00:09.300
body dominant swing pattern. So what I've done here is I'm setting up to a golf

3
00:00:09.300 --> 00:00:14.160
ball and I've taken a shaft and stuck it in the ground about a foot behind or a

4
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:18.040
foot and a half behind the ball and about four inches forward and you can see

5
00:00:18.040 --> 00:00:24.840
it's at the same angle that my club's lie angle is. This is again to help with

6
00:00:24.840 --> 00:00:29.390
the visual of where the path of the club really needs the swing. If you were to

7
00:00:29.390 --> 00:00:29.480
go

8
00:00:29.480 --> 00:00:32.730
to the top of the swing and you were to do the cast or upper body dominant

9
00:00:32.730 --> 00:00:32.800
swing

10
00:00:32.800 --> 00:00:37.000
pattern the arms would extend and you could see that I would almost miss the

11
00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:41.540
shaft on the outside of it. So if I were to do the cast or upper body swing

12
00:00:41.540 --> 00:00:45.180
problem what you would see is I would go to the top of the swing and as I

13
00:00:45.180 --> 00:00:45.560
released

14
00:00:45.560 --> 00:00:50.850
with my upper body first I would actually swing and almost miss this shaft but

15
00:00:50.850 --> 00:00:50.920
if

16
00:00:50.920 --> 00:00:55.480
it was just slightly I would clip this shaft on the way down. So this will give

17
00:00:55.480 --> 00:00:59.960
you a visual of where you want the club to swing in from. You can combine this

18
00:00:59.960 --> 00:01:04.040
with the shaft on the target line drill as well. So if you go to the top of the

19
00:01:04.040 --> 00:01:07.560
swing and you do the bump your shoulders stay closed as your arms coming close

20
00:01:07.560 --> 00:01:12.480
you can see that where I set up the shaft I really have no problem of the club

21
00:01:12.480 --> 00:01:17.430
swinging inside of it. So this is a good torture drill to help you focus on

22
00:01:17.430 --> 00:01:18.400
where

23
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:21.400
the path of the club needs to come if you're going to sequence your body

24
00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:27.000
correctly on the downswing. I recommend starting with just a 9 to 3 drill and

25
00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:31.400
then working your way up to the full swing but you can definitely hit full

26
00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:35.440
swings with the shaft in the ground as long as you do what the drill is called

27
00:01:35.440 --> 00:01:38.440
in swing under it.
