In this video, I discuss the different stages of a complete warm-up

This video highlights the significance of warming up before a round of golf.

I complete warm-up will focus on warming up three things: the body, the swing, and the mind. Always start with a physical warm-up to enhance flexibility and blood circulation. Then move on to warming up various aspects of the game, such as aim, pre-shot routine, and getting a feel for the golf club on that specific day. In this video, we'll discuss a quick warm-up option for those with limited time, focusing on preparing the body, swing, and mental readiness. Even if you're limited on your time it's essential to warm up in some way to set the stage for a successful round of golf.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.760
Alright golfers, let's talk about warming up.

2
00:00:07.760 --> 00:00:12.280
So we're talking specifically about warming up for an important round, whether

3
00:00:12.280 --> 00:00:12.400
it's a

4
00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:16.600
tournament or playing with your buddies with a few bucks on the line.

5
00:00:16.600 --> 00:00:18.360
Let's go through the process.

6
00:00:18.360 --> 00:00:22.210
So when you're getting ready to play, first we have to do a little bit of the

7
00:00:22.210 --> 00:00:22.840
physical

8
00:00:22.840 --> 00:00:25.000
warmup before we even start swinging.

9
00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:28.520
Ideally, if physical warmup will follow this progression, you're going to get

10
00:00:28.520 --> 00:00:29.040
the blood

11
00:00:29.040 --> 00:00:34.960
flowing, which creates heat and more elasticity in the tissue.

12
00:00:34.960 --> 00:00:38.490
Then we're going to warm up the joints, so we're going to get the ligaments

13
00:00:38.490 --> 00:00:39.160
active and

14
00:00:39.160 --> 00:00:40.360
then we're going to warm up the muscles.

15
00:00:40.360 --> 00:00:44.350
I have other videos like the analytic warmup and the 5 minute warmup as quick

16
00:00:44.350 --> 00:00:44.960
ways to kind

17
00:00:44.960 --> 00:00:50.620
of get through this, but that's your simple hierarchy, you don't want to skip

18
00:00:50.620 --> 00:00:51.760
that order.

19
00:00:51.760 --> 00:00:55.040
Next, what are the processes we want to warm up?

20
00:00:55.040 --> 00:00:59.380
So when we're getting ready, we're on the range or practice area, we want to be

21
00:00:59.380 --> 00:00:59.960
warming

22
00:00:59.960 --> 00:01:04.250
up or preparing our aim, that can change day to day, so whether it's using an

23
00:01:04.250 --> 00:01:05.000
alignment

24
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.360
stick or just going through my pre-shot and double checking my aim.

25
00:01:09.360 --> 00:01:12.560
Speaking of pre-shot, we want to make sure we warm up that routine.

26
00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:16.040
I find some golfers get to the first tee and they're still thinking like, "Oh

27
00:01:16.040 --> 00:01:16.680
yeah, what

28
00:01:16.680 --> 00:01:19.080
am I supposed to do when I start walking up to the ball?"

29
00:01:19.080 --> 00:01:21.910
That should have been, we should have made that a little bit more automatic

30
00:01:21.910 --> 00:01:22.400
during our

31
00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:24.000
warmup.

32
00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.800
The rhythm or the tempo of the swing for that day, and then the playing feel.

33
00:01:29.800 --> 00:01:33.510
Tiger talks about how the playing feel is changed day to day, sometimes the

34
00:01:33.510 --> 00:01:34.120
club feels

35
00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:38.090
heavy, sometimes it feels light, let's hear his words, and then hopefully that

36
00:01:38.090 --> 00:01:38.600
'll help

37
00:01:38.600 --> 00:01:42.100
you understand that your feels are going to change a little bit even if you

38
00:01:42.100 --> 00:01:42.600
stay on the

39
00:01:42.600 --> 00:01:43.600
same theme.

40
00:01:43.600 --> 00:01:48.840
One of the things that I've learned from this game is that a lot of it is all

41
00:01:48.840 --> 00:01:49.080
feel.

42
00:01:49.080 --> 00:01:56.600
When you're off our plan, I'm trying to get engaged how my body is that day.

43
00:01:56.600 --> 00:02:02.090
Some days, the golf club feels heavy, sometimes the golf club feels light, and

44
00:02:02.090 --> 00:02:02.920
it changes

45
00:02:02.920 --> 00:02:03.920
day to day.

46
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:07.460
Right here, as I'm warming up, I'm trying to get a feel of how much golf feels

47
00:02:07.460 --> 00:02:09.520
in my

48
00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:11.720
hands that day.

49
00:02:11.720 --> 00:02:16.170
Okay, so if the feel change for the best golfer in the world and one of the

50
00:02:16.170 --> 00:02:17.520
golfers who practices

51
00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:21.430
the most, then you should expect some feels to change too, but hopefully you're

52
00:02:21.430 --> 00:02:21.840
going

53
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:27.090
to stay within some themes, and so you'll build kind of a database of feels,

54
00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:27.520
like feel

55
00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:31.000
options rather than having one specific feel.

56
00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:34.510
When it comes to warming up your game, this is what most people think of as the

57
00:02:34.510 --> 00:02:35.040
warmup,

58
00:02:35.040 --> 00:02:39.720
but you don't want to skip this step or these steps or these focuses or these

59
00:02:39.720 --> 00:02:40.440
goals.

60
00:02:40.440 --> 00:02:43.560
But when we get there, this is kind of a little order I like.

61
00:02:43.560 --> 00:02:48.010
You can start with your wedges, just doing a few kind of full swings, just loos

62
00:02:48.010 --> 00:02:48.520
ening

63
00:02:48.520 --> 00:02:52.940
the body up and getting the kind of the feel of the tempo for the day, and then

64
00:02:52.940 --> 00:02:53.560
working

65
00:02:53.560 --> 00:02:54.560
on your irons.

66
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:57.520
I typically like to go from short irons to long irons.

67
00:02:57.520 --> 00:02:59.280
You don't necessarily have to hit everyone.

68
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:03.960
You can hit, sometimes I would do odds one day, evens and other.

69
00:03:03.960 --> 00:03:08.220
I know other golfers just do evens, but you want to work from short to long

70
00:03:08.220 --> 00:03:08.880
doing both

71
00:03:08.880 --> 00:03:12.600
full swing as well as 10 to 2 or any of your shots.

72
00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:17.200
You want to, basically a warm up is taking inventory for the day.

73
00:03:17.200 --> 00:03:20.960
What is working today and what are things that I have to be careful about?

74
00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:23.920
Then with my woods, I want to go through my T-shot arsenal.

75
00:03:23.920 --> 00:03:28.420
So maybe I have just one shot, I'm just going to hit my driver, but maybe I

76
00:03:28.420 --> 00:03:29.160
have a fairway

77
00:03:29.160 --> 00:03:33.260
finder, maybe I have a high bomb shot, which I'm trying to add a little more

78
00:03:33.260 --> 00:03:34.040
speed, and

79
00:03:34.040 --> 00:03:35.720
then I have kind of my stock shot.

80
00:03:35.720 --> 00:03:39.640
So I might go through my T-shot arsenal as well to see what's happening,

81
00:03:39.640 --> 00:03:40.480
especially if

82
00:03:40.480 --> 00:03:44.420
I know the course and I know specific holes that are going to be uncomfortable

83
00:03:44.420 --> 00:03:44.960
T-shots.

84
00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:47.080
I probably want to practice those a few times.

85
00:03:47.080 --> 00:03:51.830
I also, if I know the course, I want to practice the par 3s, so teeing up an

86
00:03:51.830 --> 00:03:52.880
iron that I will

87
00:03:52.880 --> 00:03:58.130
be hitting, visualizing the target, visualizing the shot, and using my pre-shot

88
00:03:58.130 --> 00:03:58.600
routine while

89
00:03:58.600 --> 00:04:01.360
going through this hierarchy.

90
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:03.960
That's the main deal for me for the full swing.

91
00:04:03.960 --> 00:04:07.340
As far as chipping pitching, I want to go through my inventory as well, so I

92
00:04:07.340 --> 00:04:07.920
want to warm

93
00:04:07.920 --> 00:04:12.540
up my basic shot, my high shot, my low shot, and then hit some different shots

94
00:04:12.540 --> 00:04:14.080
out of rough

95
00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:16.960
and different shots out of different slopes.

96
00:04:16.960 --> 00:04:20.570
So maybe my uphill, my downhill, just kind of see, that'll help me feel where

97
00:04:20.570 --> 00:04:21.040
my weight

98
00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:25.520
distribution is for that day, what my low point control feels like.

99
00:04:25.520 --> 00:04:29.240
It'll help influence what shots I'm going to choose when I'm on the course.

100
00:04:29.240 --> 00:04:32.740
Then with putting, line and speed are the two big ones, so I'll usually start

101
00:04:32.740 --> 00:04:33.200
with kind

102
00:04:33.200 --> 00:04:38.560
of a straight, whether it's a 8 feet, 10 feet, straight uphill putt just so I

103
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:39.320
can kind of

104
00:04:39.320 --> 00:04:42.360
see what my face alignment is like that day.

105
00:04:42.360 --> 00:04:46.980
Some people do use a station, like Cameron Smith, using his mirror every time

106
00:04:46.980 --> 00:04:47.440
to dial

107
00:04:47.440 --> 00:04:48.440
in his line.

108
00:04:48.440 --> 00:04:51.480
I'm okay with that, that's just kind of recalibrating.

109
00:04:51.480 --> 00:04:55.240
And then doing whatever your speed drills are, like I would do my three putts,

110
00:04:55.240 --> 00:04:55.800
I would hit

111
00:04:55.800 --> 00:05:01.060
a couple different, so I would do my inner thigh, my outer thigh, my pocket, my

112
00:05:01.060 --> 00:05:01.600
basically

113
00:05:01.600 --> 00:05:04.200
stock putts to see how far they were rolling.

114
00:05:04.200 --> 00:05:08.120
That would give me a good idea as far as the speed for that day.

115
00:05:08.120 --> 00:05:10.440
So this is kind of a fairly comprehensive.

116
00:05:10.440 --> 00:05:15.700
This takes about an hour to go through, maybe 45 minutes to go through, but

117
00:05:15.700 --> 00:05:16.400
this was what

118
00:05:16.400 --> 00:05:22.010
I would do, kind of getting ready for a major event or a round that I really

119
00:05:22.010 --> 00:05:23.240
care about.

120
00:05:23.240 --> 00:05:26.990
But I know not everyone's going to take an hour before, so this would be my

121
00:05:26.990 --> 00:05:28.000
quick version.

122
00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:32.000
So quick version is I want to warm up my body, my swing, and my mind.

123
00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:35.770
So basically, my body, I could do the quick five minute warm up, even just

124
00:05:35.770 --> 00:05:36.400
doing some

125
00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:41.140
leg swings, some squats, some twisting, get the spine loose, a couple different

126
00:05:41.140 --> 00:05:41.840
ways.

127
00:05:41.840 --> 00:05:47.720
You know, the side translations and the rotations, and a little toe-touching,

128
00:05:47.720 --> 00:05:48.400
all that just to

129
00:05:48.400 --> 00:05:51.440
get the joints and the muscles going.

130
00:05:51.440 --> 00:05:57.790
Then my swing, I might do really quickly three clubs, a wood, maybe not even

131
00:05:57.790 --> 00:05:59.040
driver, probably

132
00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:01.880
driver, one iron, one wedge.

133
00:06:01.880 --> 00:06:03.960
That'll at least help me see what's going on.

134
00:06:03.960 --> 00:06:07.550
And I would probably pick an iron kind of in the middle, like a six-seven iron,

135
00:06:07.550 --> 00:06:07.840
or if

136
00:06:07.840 --> 00:06:12.520
you have more hybrids than maybe a seven or eight iron, something like that.

137
00:06:12.520 --> 00:06:17.520
And then a wedge doing maybe my full as well as my ten to two there.

138
00:06:17.520 --> 00:06:22.210
So that would only take about five minutes or so, chipping, I would probably do

139
00:06:22.210 --> 00:06:22.880
just one

140
00:06:22.880 --> 00:06:25.640
or two of my stock shots.

141
00:06:25.640 --> 00:06:28.890
Not I would only hit one or two shots, I would just, I'd go to one of my stock

142
00:06:28.890 --> 00:06:29.600
distances.

143
00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:34.880
So maybe my ten foot carry, or maybe my twenty foot carry, probably doing more

144
00:06:34.880 --> 00:06:35.680
like the hip

145
00:06:35.680 --> 00:06:38.920
height one, because that's kind of the medium shot for me.

146
00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:42.190
And then putting, if I only had a couple minutes to hit a few putts, I would

147
00:06:42.190 --> 00:06:42.960
probably hit a

148
00:06:42.960 --> 00:06:47.440
bunch of thirty footers and then maybe a few two footers, so really short to

149
00:06:47.440 --> 00:06:48.200
work on start

150
00:06:48.200 --> 00:06:49.200
line.

151
00:06:49.200 --> 00:06:54.440
But mostly hitting three footers just to kind of get the speed and feel out how

152
00:06:54.440 --> 00:06:55.400
far my normal

153
00:06:55.400 --> 00:06:57.600
stock putt is rolling out that day.

154
00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:02.120
And I'd hopefully walk away with one feel for the day and maybe one goal for

155
00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:02.720
play.

156
00:07:02.720 --> 00:07:08.500
If I'm in a rush, then the main thing I'll be focusing for my main mental goal

157
00:07:08.500 --> 00:07:08.960
is to

158
00:07:08.960 --> 00:07:12.680
be patient as I find my swing as I get out there.

159
00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:16.910
So maybe playing a little extra conservatively, thinking through and not taking

160
00:07:16.910 --> 00:07:17.680
unnecessary

161
00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:21.920
risks and kind of trying to buy into one process goal.

162
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:24.360
We'll talk about that in another video.

163
00:07:24.360 --> 00:07:29.120
So if you struggle with warming up, you can do the full version, which we had

164
00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:29.640
here, love

165
00:07:29.640 --> 00:07:32.400
it, but it does take a little bit time, so if you're doing the quick version,

166
00:07:32.400 --> 00:07:32.880
this one

167
00:07:32.880 --> 00:07:36.830
usually only takes about five or ten minutes and you might not be quite as

168
00:07:36.830 --> 00:07:37.560
