Benchmarking Distances with a Rangefinder

In this video, I demonstrate how to plot dispersion without a launch monitor. First, I gather yardages for reference: for example, in this video, I used the green with flags or landmarks at 60 yards, 75 yards, 82 yards, and 95 yards. Then, I stand parallel to the target line and use finger dispersion to mark left-to-right pattern. I designate targets like the pin and bunkers with finger positions. After hitting shots, I record the distance and direction in relation to the target. I adjust my aim and use this method for various clubs to establish a trend. This helps me make informed club choices on the course when a launch monitor isn't available.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.810
In this video, we're going to go over plotting your dispersion without using a
2
00:00:08.810 --> 00:00:10.560
launch monitor.
3
00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:13.540
So there's a couple steps to plotting your dispersion if you're not going to
4
00:00:13.540 --> 00:00:14.240
use something
5
00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:15.240
like Trekman.
6
00:00:15.240 --> 00:00:20.810
First, I want to get a few yardages, so I have a rough idea of about how far
7
00:00:20.810 --> 00:00:21.560
each shot
8
00:00:21.560 --> 00:00:26.500
is carrying or total, but I prefer carry, and then I'm going to use some finger
9
00:00:26.500 --> 00:00:27.360
dispersion
10
00:00:27.360 --> 00:00:30.520
so I can figure out the left to right pattern.
11
00:00:30.520 --> 00:00:34.770
So I'm going to stand basically even with where I'm hitting the ball, and in
12
00:00:34.770 --> 00:00:35.880
this particular
13
00:00:35.880 --> 00:00:44.360
case, I'm going to get the front of the green, the pin, the back of the green.
14
00:00:44.360 --> 00:00:50.400
So I've got 60 to the front, 82 to the pin, 95 to the back.
15
00:00:50.400 --> 00:00:56.240
So that way, if I don't have really good landmarks, in fact, I'm going to do
16
00:00:56.240 --> 00:00:57.080
one more, I'm going
17
00:00:57.080 --> 00:01:00.120
to do the edge of that bunker, which is 75.
18
00:01:00.120 --> 00:01:05.640
So 60 to the front, 75, 95 to the back, 82 to the pin.
19
00:01:05.640 --> 00:01:11.400
That gives me a few different numbers or references so that when I hit this, I
20
00:01:11.400 --> 00:01:12.240
'm not totally
21
00:01:12.240 --> 00:01:14.560
flying blind or just guessing.
22
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:21.250
I would like to get my guess within two yards distance-wise, but depending on
23
00:01:21.250 --> 00:01:22.280
how flat,
24
00:01:22.280 --> 00:01:25.900
if you're hitting an uphill downhill, landing on slopes, sometimes it's hard to
25
00:01:25.900 --> 00:01:26.680
see exactly.
26
00:01:26.680 --> 00:01:29.520
So we're going to get as good of a range as we can.
27
00:01:29.520 --> 00:01:35.180
Now, I've got a sheet of paper to write down what actually happens, but the way
28
00:01:35.180 --> 00:01:35.960
I'm going
29
00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:39.510
to keep track of direction, I'm now going to pick the pin, that yellow pin as
30
00:01:39.510 --> 00:01:40.160
my target,
31
00:01:40.160 --> 00:01:42.760
so I'm holding up four fingers.
32
00:01:42.760 --> 00:01:48.170
Two fingers to the right is middle of the far bunker, and two fingers to the
33
00:01:48.170 --> 00:01:48.800
left is
34
00:01:48.800 --> 00:01:53.200
the little post just to the right of the 150 pull.
35
00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:57.050
So now as I go through, I'm going to be able to write down how far did it go
36
00:01:57.050 --> 00:01:57.720
and then I'll
37
00:01:57.720 --> 00:02:03.480
write either one left, two left for how many fingers it was left of the target
38
00:02:03.480 --> 00:02:04.240
or one right
39
00:02:04.240 --> 00:02:07.800
to right for how many right, and that's going to give me kind of a rough little
40
00:02:07.800 --> 00:02:12.480
scatter plot.
41
00:02:12.480 --> 00:02:21.720
So this isn't going to be a full shot just for understanding the process.
42
00:02:21.720 --> 00:02:27.240
So that is two left at about 80.
43
00:02:27.240 --> 00:02:33.080
So now we'll maybe adjust the aim just slightly.
44
00:02:33.080 --> 00:02:38.440
I would actually, if I'm doing this for real, I would probably adjust my aim,
45
00:02:38.440 --> 00:02:39.160
go through
46
00:02:39.160 --> 00:02:47.800
a little aiming process each time, that'll help slow me down.
47
00:02:47.800 --> 00:02:50.130
And right now I'm just kind of hitting like more of a half three-quarter, so
48
00:02:50.130 --> 00:02:50.520
that was
49
00:02:50.520 --> 00:02:55.680
probably 75, and we'll call that one right.
50
00:02:55.680 --> 00:02:59.160
So I almost forgot what I was doing, let's write those down.
51
00:02:59.160 --> 00:03:03.710
So we got the first shot as two left at 80, and then we've got the second one
52
00:03:03.710 --> 00:03:04.680
at one right
53
00:03:04.680 --> 00:03:05.680
at 75.
54
00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:12.280
It's easy to do if you use your phone, just kind of keep a running tally, but I
55
00:03:12.280 --> 00:03:13.120
'm using
56
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:16.600
my phone to record the video right now, so I'm going to write it on parchment
57
00:03:16.600 --> 00:03:17.000
the old
58
00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:18.000
school way.
59
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.920
Let's see if we can do one more.
60
00:03:22.920 --> 00:03:26.120
So that is more like it at the flag.
61
00:03:26.120 --> 00:03:31.640
All right, that landed right next to the flag, so we'll call that 82 and 0.
62
00:03:31.640 --> 00:03:38.460
So if I was looking at just real quick these numbers, and normally the more
63
00:03:38.460 --> 00:03:40.280
shots the better,
64
00:03:40.280 --> 00:03:44.940
but on this I'd say low was 75, high was 82, so I'm looking at kind of upper 70
65
00:03:44.940 --> 00:03:45.640
s as that
66
00:03:45.640 --> 00:03:49.520
shot, and it was two left, one right, zero.
67
00:03:49.520 --> 00:03:53.400
So maybe bias, that first one I think was more aim.
68
00:03:53.400 --> 00:03:56.800
So I'm going to bias that on being pretty straight with my target.
69
00:03:56.800 --> 00:03:59.290
So if I do that for a few different clubs, I'm going to have a couple different
70
00:03:59.290 --> 00:03:59.880
references.
71
00:03:59.880 --> 00:04:05.240
I don't think you have to, if you're using this method, it's not quite as
72
00:04:05.240 --> 00:04:05.640
obvious as
73
00:04:05.640 --> 00:04:10.270
track man, so I would just do a few numbers, maybe something in couple inside
74
00:04:10.270 --> 00:04:11.360
100, one
75
00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:16.830
minute, you know, maybe every 25 yards, 100, 125, 150, 175, and just kind of
76
00:04:16.830 --> 00:04:17.480
use that to
77
00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:18.880
get your general trend.
78
00:04:18.880 --> 00:04:21.470
So if you don't have access to a launch monitor, you can still do it the old
79
00:04:21.470 --> 00:04:22.600
school way with
80
00:04:22.600 --> 00:04:24.320
a couple steps.
81
00:04:24.320 --> 00:04:27.340
Use the launch monitor, or sorry, use the range finder to get a couple
82
00:04:27.340 --> 00:04:29.040
appropriate distances,
83
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:32.960
and then write it down so you can get a relative average, that'll give you
84
00:04:32.960 --> 00:04:33.840
close enough as
85
00:04:33.840 --> 00:04:37.000
far as a baseline, that'll allow you to be a little more precise when you're
86
00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:37.440
picking
87
00:04:37.440 --> 00:04:46.800
your clubs on the course.
