Too much "hinge" can cause big problems for transition

The most important thing with the backswing is to make sure that you are ready for the downswing. If you hinge your wrists (especially your right wrist) too much, then you can have issues with casting in transition, as well as making the motorcycle movement more challenging.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.400
This video is over setting the wrist.

2
00:00:06.400 --> 00:00:10.200
So I've had a couple cases recently of golfers who were trying to kind of

3
00:00:10.200 --> 00:00:10.960
understand what

4
00:00:10.960 --> 00:00:13.080
the wrist should do at the top of the swing.

5
00:00:13.080 --> 00:00:15.960
And basically what they were trying to do was they were trying to hinge them as

6
00:00:15.960 --> 00:00:16.240
much

7
00:00:16.240 --> 00:00:17.240
as possible.

8
00:00:17.240 --> 00:00:22.200
Now, this has been talked about a lot in golf because when we look from this

9
00:00:22.200 --> 00:00:23.560
face on view,

10
00:00:23.560 --> 00:00:26.880
you're going to tend to see this narrowing or this angle here.

11
00:00:26.880 --> 00:00:30.600
And so a lot of golf instructors have talked about hinging the wrist kind of

12
00:00:30.600 --> 00:00:31.280
like hinging

13
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:32.520
a hammer.

14
00:00:32.520 --> 00:00:37.160
Now the problem with that is when we look at 3D, that's not exactly the case.

15
00:00:37.160 --> 00:00:40.600
And I'm going to go into exactly why during this video.

16
00:00:40.600 --> 00:00:45.370
So if you were to maximally hinge a wrist, then this left wrist is going to

17
00:00:45.370 --> 00:00:46.240
drift towards

18
00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:48.720
extension like so.

19
00:00:48.720 --> 00:00:53.910
The reason for that, you can check the video on combined movements of the fore

20
00:00:53.910 --> 00:00:54.520
arms.

21
00:00:54.520 --> 00:00:59.720
But to understand that if we were to hinge like so, you'll see that my wrist

22
00:00:59.720 --> 00:01:00.560
can extend

23
00:01:00.560 --> 00:01:02.600
pretty easily.

24
00:01:02.600 --> 00:01:06.370
If we hinge and then try to flex, it feels very uncomfortable and actually

25
00:01:06.370 --> 00:01:07.440
pulls my body

26
00:01:07.440 --> 00:01:10.480
out of that hinge or radial deviation.

27
00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:15.010
So when you go up to the top of the swing, if I'm facing this way, if you hinge

28
00:01:15.010 --> 00:01:15.560
as much

29
00:01:15.560 --> 00:01:19.900
as you can, you can see that that would tend to put the club face in a certain

30
00:01:19.900 --> 00:01:20.760
position.

31
00:01:20.760 --> 00:01:24.480
If I then tried to flex it, which is the motorcycle movement, you'll see that

32
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:25.600
that tends to pull

33
00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:28.920
me slightly out of that hinge.

34
00:01:28.920 --> 00:01:33.090
So what's more important is at the top of the swing feeling like the right

35
00:01:33.090 --> 00:01:33.840
wrist is going

36
00:01:33.840 --> 00:01:39.240
to cup or extend as they've talked about kind of holding a tray or holding, you

37
00:01:39.240 --> 00:01:39.920
know, as

38
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:44.640
if you were to grab the shower curtain, basically getting this wrist facing up

39
00:01:44.640 --> 00:01:46.040
like so.

40
00:01:46.040 --> 00:01:50.210
What we see on 3D is that in the at the top of the swing, the right wrist is

41
00:01:50.210 --> 00:01:50.600
going to

42
00:01:50.600 --> 00:01:55.910
be extended for a right hand golfer, almost 60 degrees, 50 degrees somewhere in

43
00:01:55.910 --> 00:01:56.640
that range,

44
00:01:56.640 --> 00:01:59.360
which is near maximum for a lot of golfers.

45
00:01:59.360 --> 00:02:03.160
The left wrist is only going to flex 5 to 10 degrees.

46
00:02:03.160 --> 00:02:08.320
So what ends up happening is as I make this movement, because the right wrist

47
00:02:08.320 --> 00:02:09.000
is going

48
00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:13.840
to be cupping and the left wrist is going to be hinging, they're going to

49
00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:15.040
basically get

50
00:02:15.040 --> 00:02:20.240
into a comfortable position up at the top of the swing as if I was in this

51
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:21.640
loaded position

52
00:02:21.640 --> 00:02:23.740
getting ready to throw.

53
00:02:23.740 --> 00:02:27.910
Now if I was to maximally hinge this as much as possible, then I would

54
00:02:27.910 --> 00:02:29.040
physically have

55
00:02:29.040 --> 00:02:32.880
no slack to increase it on the way down.

56
00:02:32.880 --> 00:02:38.080
So what we want to do is we want to make sure that we get some hinge in the

57
00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:39.360
left wrist and

58
00:02:39.360 --> 00:02:43.140
a fair amount of extension in the right wrist, but not quite go to maximum,

59
00:02:43.140 --> 00:02:43.880
because if you

60
00:02:43.880 --> 00:02:47.440
go all the way to maximum, you can't increase it in the transition.

61
00:02:47.440 --> 00:02:51.610
And the more important thing, if I face this way, the more important thing is

62
00:02:51.610 --> 00:02:52.640
during transition

63
00:02:52.640 --> 00:02:57.960
to get that motorcycle going and to have that wrist set.

64
00:02:57.960 --> 00:03:02.430
Now one of the other questions that I tend to get is, is it okay to start that

65
00:03:02.430 --> 00:03:03.280
motorcycle

66
00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:05.440
movement to end the backswing?

67
00:03:05.440 --> 00:03:06.440
And absolutely.

68
00:03:06.440 --> 00:03:11.590
There's a number of golfers, prominent golfers, who tend to as they set already

69
00:03:11.590 --> 00:03:12.600
start flexing

70
00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:14.480
that lead wrist.

71
00:03:14.480 --> 00:03:18.860
And in doing so, that pre gets the club face already starting close, then you

72
00:03:18.860 --> 00:03:19.400
don't have

73
00:03:19.400 --> 00:03:22.100
to think about it during transition.

74
00:03:22.100 --> 00:03:25.440
But if you're focused on hinging the wrist as much as you can, it's going to

75
00:03:25.440 --> 00:03:25.840
make it

76
00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:28.440
harder for you to do that motorcycle move.

77
00:03:28.440 --> 00:03:32.160
So yes, we want to hinge the wrist, but we want to have more of a focus on the

78
00:03:32.160 --> 00:03:32.720
cupping

79
00:03:32.720 --> 00:03:37.400
of the right wrist and the position of the wrist this way, rather than trying

80
00:03:37.400 --> 00:03:38.240
to maximize

81
00:03:38.240 --> 00:03:41.080
them in this hinge motion.

82
00:03:41.080 --> 00:03:44.410
So hopefully that helps clarify what the wrists are going to do during the

83
00:03:44.410 --> 00:03:45.660
setting phase.

84
00:03:45.660 --> 00:03:49.000
If you focus on it, it'll allow you to be a little bit more aggressive with

85
00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:49.360
what your

86
00:03:49.360 --> 00:03:51.080
body does during the downswing.
