Should you do the same thing as Tiger, Freddy, and Xander?
Recently I heard two other golfers who claimed to do a lot of the hit from the top drill (aka the pause drill). To do the drill, swing to the top of your swing, stop for at least 2 seconds to avoid momentum, and then start down from the ground up. This drill is really useful for working on new top-of-backswing positions as well as working on eliminating a strong arm pull in transition.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.420
This content video is revisiting the pause of the top drill or hit from the top
2
00:00:10.420 --> 00:00:10.880
.
3
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:16.900
So earlier on, I've created a video called hit from the top.
4
00:00:16.900 --> 00:00:22.000
That was paying homage to Tiger's old drill that Butch Harmon had him working
5
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:22.320
on.
6
00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:25.890
And it's really good for working on changing the top of your backswing
7
00:00:25.890 --> 00:00:27.000
positions because
8
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:32.000
it gives you a little bit more time to experience what's going on.
9
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.470
And it gives you, because of that time, you can kind of check things where oft
10
00:00:36.470 --> 00:00:37.560
entimes once
11
00:00:37.560 --> 00:00:41.340
the club and the arms go out of view, a lot of golfers have a hard time feeling
12
00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:41.640
what's
13
00:00:41.640 --> 00:00:43.120
going on.
14
00:00:43.120 --> 00:00:46.480
So this can help really refine the top of the backswing.
15
00:00:46.480 --> 00:00:52.520
Well, I've since heard both Fred Couples and Xander Schofle talk about how that
16
00:00:52.520 --> 00:00:53.280
was one
17
00:00:53.280 --> 00:00:55.520
of their big drills as well.
18
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:58.470
So we've got three golfers who say that they used to do a lot of this drill
19
00:00:58.470 --> 00:00:59.240
where you go
20
00:00:59.240 --> 00:01:03.240
to the top, stop, and then swing down from there.
21
00:01:03.240 --> 00:01:05.280
Tiger Woods, Fred Couples, Xander Schofle.
22
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:12.080
I'd say that's a pretty good cluster of ball strikers to model after.
23
00:01:12.080 --> 00:01:17.510
Now in addition to helping you work on kind of the top of the backswing, it
24
00:01:17.510 --> 00:01:18.160
really helps
25
00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:22.710
with taking away some automatic triggers and working on your downswing
26
00:01:22.710 --> 00:01:23.760
sequencing.
27
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:29.190
I find that some golfers who get really armsy or kind of pull down or spin with
28
00:01:29.190 --> 00:01:30.520
the shoulders,
29
00:01:30.520 --> 00:01:35.950
when you do more of this hit from the top drill, you get your lower body to
30
00:01:35.950 --> 00:01:36.200
initiate
31
00:01:36.200 --> 00:01:42.190
the downswing without a whole lot of conscious thought, because typically when
32
00:01:42.190 --> 00:01:43.080
you do this
33
00:01:43.080 --> 00:01:49.040
backswing position and you stop there, you'll be a little bit more over that
34
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:50.120
trail side.
35
00:01:50.120 --> 00:01:53.960
And so if you were to then just fire really hard, you'll tend to have low point
36
00:01:53.960 --> 00:01:54.400
issues
37
00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:58.240
or you'll tend to have paths coming too much outside in.
38
00:01:58.240 --> 00:02:03.470
So if you get to that position, we're up at the top of the swing, stop, and
39
00:02:03.470 --> 00:02:04.160
then from
40
00:02:04.160 --> 00:02:10.200
there, we're going to try and get to our good follow through position.
41
00:02:10.200 --> 00:02:13.760
You'll see that in order to do that, you'll tend to have to have a pretty good
42
00:02:13.760 --> 00:02:14.400
initiation
43
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:15.960
from the lower body.
44
00:02:15.960 --> 00:02:23.310
Now I do think this drill can be a problem for some golfers who don't connect
45
00:02:23.310 --> 00:02:24.360
the lower
46
00:02:24.360 --> 00:02:31.620
body into the swing very well, in which case may be stopping at more 3/4 and
47
00:02:31.620 --> 00:02:32.920
then kind of
48
00:02:32.920 --> 00:02:38.730
making that pause just before the top of the backswing instead of truly at the
49
00:02:38.730 --> 00:02:39.320
top of the
50
00:02:39.320 --> 00:02:40.320
backswing.
51
00:02:40.320 --> 00:02:45.790
That can help prevent getting too armsy if you're more one of these upper body
52
00:02:45.790 --> 00:02:48.280
spin guys.
53
00:02:48.280 --> 00:02:51.860
But if you look at yourself on video and you don't like either the arms
54
00:02:51.860 --> 00:02:53.280
collapsing or
55
00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:59.450
the body kind of going up or like an excessive trail leg straightening or a
56
00:02:59.450 --> 00:03:00.600
little sway,
57
00:03:00.600 --> 00:03:04.500
one of these kind of like trigger moves that are often subconscious and really
58
00:03:04.500 --> 00:03:04.920
hard to
59
00:03:04.920 --> 00:03:05.920
get out of.
60
00:03:05.920 --> 00:03:11.760
This is an ultimate torture drill, but it can really help clean up both that
61
00:03:11.760 --> 00:03:12.600
top of the
62
00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:19.440
backswing as well as that sequencing and that feeling of a proper transition.
63
00:03:19.440 --> 00:03:21.280
So it's a simple drill.
64
00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:24.580
You just go up to the top of the swing, wait longer than you think is
65
00:03:24.580 --> 00:03:25.440
comfortable.
66
00:03:25.440 --> 00:03:30.570
So usually I say two or three seconds and then from here, you're going to try
67
00:03:30.570 --> 00:03:31.000
and get
68
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.960
into your good downswing delivery and then into your follow through position.
69
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:40.680
So if you haven't tried it and you want a challenge and you want a sequencing
70
00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:41.000
drill,
71
00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:43.600
I highly recommend you check it out.
72
00:03:43.600 --> 00:03:48.330
Maybe it will become one of your go-tos for resetting some of your sequencing
73
00:03:48.330 --> 00:03:48.820
or top
74
00:03:48.820 --> 00:03:54.280
of the backswing positions just like Tiger, Fred or Xander.
75
00:03:54.280 --> 00:04:04.360
And we'll have to play that way.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:10.420
This content video is revisiting the pause of the top drill or hit from the top
2
00:00:10.420 --> 00:00:10.880
.
3
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:16.900
So earlier on, I've created a video called hit from the top.
4
00:00:16.900 --> 00:00:22.000
That was paying homage to Tiger's old drill that Butch Harmon had him working
5
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:22.320
on.
6
00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:25.890
And it's really good for working on changing the top of your backswing
7
00:00:25.890 --> 00:00:27.000
positions because
8
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:32.000
it gives you a little bit more time to experience what's going on.
9
00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.470
And it gives you, because of that time, you can kind of check things where oft
10
00:00:36.470 --> 00:00:37.560
entimes once
11
00:00:37.560 --> 00:00:41.340
the club and the arms go out of view, a lot of golfers have a hard time feeling
12
00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:41.640
what's
13
00:00:41.640 --> 00:00:43.120
going on.
14
00:00:43.120 --> 00:00:46.480
So this can help really refine the top of the backswing.
15
00:00:46.480 --> 00:00:52.520
Well, I've since heard both Fred Couples and Xander Schofle talk about how that
16
00:00:52.520 --> 00:00:53.280
was one
17
00:00:53.280 --> 00:00:55.520
of their big drills as well.
18
00:00:55.520 --> 00:00:58.470
So we've got three golfers who say that they used to do a lot of this drill
19
00:00:58.470 --> 00:00:59.240
where you go
20
00:00:59.240 --> 00:01:03.240
to the top, stop, and then swing down from there.
21
00:01:03.240 --> 00:01:05.280
Tiger Woods, Fred Couples, Xander Schofle.
22
00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:12.080
I'd say that's a pretty good cluster of ball strikers to model after.
23
00:01:12.080 --> 00:01:17.510
Now in addition to helping you work on kind of the top of the backswing, it
24
00:01:17.510 --> 00:01:18.160
really helps
25
00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:22.710
with taking away some automatic triggers and working on your downswing
26
00:01:22.710 --> 00:01:23.760
sequencing.
27
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:29.190
I find that some golfers who get really armsy or kind of pull down or spin with
28
00:01:29.190 --> 00:01:30.520
the shoulders,
29
00:01:30.520 --> 00:01:35.950
when you do more of this hit from the top drill, you get your lower body to
30
00:01:35.950 --> 00:01:36.200
initiate
31
00:01:36.200 --> 00:01:42.190
the downswing without a whole lot of conscious thought, because typically when
32
00:01:42.190 --> 00:01:43.080
you do this
33
00:01:43.080 --> 00:01:49.040
backswing position and you stop there, you'll be a little bit more over that
34
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:50.120
trail side.
35
00:01:50.120 --> 00:01:53.960
And so if you were to then just fire really hard, you'll tend to have low point
36
00:01:53.960 --> 00:01:54.400
issues
37
00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:58.240
or you'll tend to have paths coming too much outside in.
38
00:01:58.240 --> 00:02:03.470
So if you get to that position, we're up at the top of the swing, stop, and
39
00:02:03.470 --> 00:02:04.160
then from
40
00:02:04.160 --> 00:02:10.200
there, we're going to try and get to our good follow through position.
41
00:02:10.200 --> 00:02:13.760
You'll see that in order to do that, you'll tend to have to have a pretty good
42
00:02:13.760 --> 00:02:14.400
initiation
43
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:15.960
from the lower body.
44
00:02:15.960 --> 00:02:23.310
Now I do think this drill can be a problem for some golfers who don't connect
45
00:02:23.310 --> 00:02:24.360
the lower
46
00:02:24.360 --> 00:02:31.620
body into the swing very well, in which case may be stopping at more 3/4 and
47
00:02:31.620 --> 00:02:32.920
then kind of
48
00:02:32.920 --> 00:02:38.730
making that pause just before the top of the backswing instead of truly at the
49
00:02:38.730 --> 00:02:39.320
top of the
50
00:02:39.320 --> 00:02:40.320
backswing.
51
00:02:40.320 --> 00:02:45.790
That can help prevent getting too armsy if you're more one of these upper body
52
00:02:45.790 --> 00:02:48.280
spin guys.
53
00:02:48.280 --> 00:02:51.860
But if you look at yourself on video and you don't like either the arms
54
00:02:51.860 --> 00:02:53.280
collapsing or
55
00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:59.450
the body kind of going up or like an excessive trail leg straightening or a
56
00:02:59.450 --> 00:03:00.600
little sway,
57
00:03:00.600 --> 00:03:04.500
one of these kind of like trigger moves that are often subconscious and really
58
00:03:04.500 --> 00:03:04.920
hard to
59
00:03:04.920 --> 00:03:05.920
get out of.
60
00:03:05.920 --> 00:03:11.760
This is an ultimate torture drill, but it can really help clean up both that
61
00:03:11.760 --> 00:03:12.600
top of the
62

backswing as well as that sequencing and that feeling of a proper transition.
63
00:03:19.440 --> 00:03:21.280
So it's a simple drill.
64
00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:24.580
You just go up to the top of the swing, wait longer than you think is
65
00:03:24.580 --> 00:03:25.440
comfortable.
66
00:03:25.440 --> 00:03:30.570
So usually I say two or three seconds and then from here, you're going to try
67
00:03:30.570 --> 00:03:31.000
and get
68
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.960
into your good downswing delivery and then into your follow through position.
69
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:40.680
So if you haven't tried it and you want a challenge and you want a sequencing
70
00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:41.000
drill,
71
00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:43.600
I highly recommend you check it out.
72
00:03:43.600 --> 00:03:48.330
Maybe it will become one of your go-tos for resetting some of your sequencing
73
00:03:48.330 --> 00:03:48.820
or top
74
00:03:48.820 --> 00:03:54.280
of the backswing positions just like Tiger, Fred or Xander.
75
00:03:54.280 --> 00:04:04.360
And we'll have to play that way.
