The ability to make birdies, and save pars, depends on your wedge play.
Wedge play is your ability to save pars and make birdies on short par 4's and par 5's that you can't reach in two. It's hard to rely on consistently making putts longer than about 20 feet. On average, you aren't going to hit many shots inside 20 feet from further than 125 yards.
From the tour averages, a few simple target benchmarks are:
- 20 yards - 6 feet
- 50 yards - 12 feet
- 100 yards - 16 feet
Another way to track your wedge play is the simple stat of up and downs or getting the ball in the hole from Greenside in 2 shots or less.
Up and Down Benchmarks
- Tour - 67%
- 80 golfer - 40%
- 90 golfer - 10%
- 100 golfer - 5%

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.840
All right, golfers, in this video, we're going to take a look at the wedge shot
2
00:00:07.840 --> 00:00:08.680
benchmark.
3
00:00:08.680 --> 00:00:13.880
So basically, our wedge shots from inside of 100 yards.
4
00:00:13.880 --> 00:00:18.320
So the simplest stat is the up and down percentage.
5
00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:22.640
If I missed the green, was I able to save par on that shot?
6
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:28.200
5% of the time at 100 golf, 2/3 at pro.
7
00:00:28.200 --> 00:00:33.020
But again, that factors in-- if I'm a really good putter, that can artificially
8
00:00:33.020 --> 00:00:33.480
hit it.
9
00:00:33.480 --> 00:00:36.240
If I'm a bad putter, that artificially makes it lower.
10
00:00:36.240 --> 00:00:39.920
So let's separate putting in wedge play.
11
00:00:39.920 --> 00:00:43.460
To do that, we're going to look at that proximity or how much was the leave.
12
00:00:43.460 --> 00:00:49.080
How long was my put after my wedge shot?
13
00:00:49.080 --> 00:00:52.100
So a leave distance goal, we're going to break it down into a couple different
14
00:00:52.100 --> 00:00:52.680
benchmarks
15
00:00:52.680 --> 00:00:55.960
here, or less than 30 or 30 to 100.
16
00:00:55.960 --> 00:01:01.160
Or inside 30 yards, our goal is to get it inside 8 feet, more in this 4 to 8
17
00:01:01.160 --> 00:01:02.680
foot zone, especially
18
00:01:02.680 --> 00:01:07.440
when you start getting into like 10 yards from the pin.
19
00:01:07.440 --> 00:01:13.000
You'll see that it just gradually increases up until we get to the 100.
20
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:17.530
So I usually give most people that target of that 4 to 8 foot zone from less
21
00:01:17.530 --> 00:01:18.360
than 30
22
00:01:18.360 --> 00:01:20.360
yards, from 30 to 100.
23
00:01:20.360 --> 00:01:25.850
We know from the iron play that 100 is 16 feet, so that gives us kind of that
24
00:01:25.850 --> 00:01:27.200
30, that 10
25
00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:30.520
to 16 foot zone.
26
00:01:30.520 --> 00:01:33.460
You'll see when we start getting up towards 100, now there's a much bigger
27
00:01:33.460 --> 00:01:34.520
difference,
28
00:01:34.520 --> 00:01:40.760
because at 100 yards, the higher handicap golfers were at about 45 feet, it was
29
00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:41.400
rounded
30
00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:47.750
up to 50 to keep it nice and easy for most golfers to remember where you're
31
00:01:47.750 --> 00:01:49.000
targeting.
32
00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:54.290
So what we'll see from the putting videos is that if you're not inside 16 feet,
33
00:01:54.290 --> 00:01:55.040
20 feet,
34
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:58.560
whatever it may be, you have a very low chance of actually making the putt,
35
00:01:58.560 --> 00:01:59.280
even if you hit
36
00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:01.040
a good putt.
37
00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:05.780
So then the other way that I kind of, this is easier if you're keeping stats
38
00:02:05.780 --> 00:02:06.480
like I showed
39
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:10.400
on that Excel spreadsheet in the iron play, but if you're just kind of
40
00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:11.800
benchmarking mentally,
41
00:02:11.800 --> 00:02:16.590
I usually do 20 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards, because they're pretty easy numbers
42
00:02:16.590 --> 00:02:17.280
to remember
43
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:21.840
for toward range, you got 6 feet, 12 feet, 16 feet.
44
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:26.640
So 6 feet double, and then 16 feet we know from the iron play.
45
00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:32.270
If you wanted to figure out the exact percentage, 20 to 60 yards is about 12%,
46
00:02:32.270 --> 00:02:34.040
60 to 100 yards
47
00:02:34.040 --> 00:02:37.100
is about 8%.
48
00:02:37.100 --> 00:02:43.250
So obviously the closer you get, the harder it is to get the percentage really
49
00:02:43.250 --> 00:02:43.920
low.
50
00:02:43.920 --> 00:02:46.920
So that's why these numbers go up, but it gives us this window.
51
00:02:46.920 --> 00:02:51.840
If you get most of your wedge shots inside that four to eight foot zone, or
52
00:02:51.840 --> 00:02:52.920
your distance
53
00:02:52.920 --> 00:02:58.080
wedge is inside that 15 foot zone, you're doing really well.
54
00:02:58.080 --> 00:03:03.440
But again, pick the numbers that are one step ahead of where you're at.
55
00:03:03.440 --> 00:03:08.190
And ultimately, because this takes a little less athleticism, it can be more
56
00:03:08.190 --> 00:03:09.280
frustrating.
57
00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:13.640
There are techniques that make this easier, and that's what we'll cover in the
58
00:03:13.640 --> 00:03:14.320
next slide.
59
00:03:14.320 --> 00:03:17.630
But if you struggle with it, don't think that just because it's shorter, it's
60
00:03:17.630 --> 00:03:18.120
an easier
61
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:19.200
shot.
62
00:03:19.200 --> 00:03:23.560
In some ways, it's just different skills than, say, hitting a golf ball really
63
00:03:23.560 --> 00:03:23.960
long.
64
00:03:23.960 --> 00:03:29.110
Okay, so the technique that relates to wedges, I explain it that to me there
65
00:03:29.110 --> 00:03:30.320
are three really
66
00:03:30.320 --> 00:03:33.520
big keys for wedge play, and if you want to get better at wedge play, you want
67
00:03:33.520 --> 00:03:33.960
to work
68
00:03:33.960 --> 00:03:37.520
on one or all of these three keys.
69
00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:42.050
So the centers being stacked is basically your upper body and your lower body
70
00:03:42.050 --> 00:03:42.800
being more
71
00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:45.440
on top of each other.
72
00:03:45.440 --> 00:03:48.400
This one helps with contact location and low point.
73
00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:54.060
A lot of bad wedge players get too much tilt this way or slide everything too
74
00:03:54.060 --> 00:03:54.960
far forward
75
00:03:54.960 --> 00:03:56.800
past the ball that way.
76
00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:01.720
So centers being stacked pretty much on top of the golf ball, maybe slightly
77
00:04:01.720 --> 00:04:02.400
ahead.
78
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:08.550
On radius is looking at the distance between the grip in your chest or your
79
00:04:08.550 --> 00:04:09.360
body.
80
00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:13.920
So you can still have some wrist involved, but I don't want to see the arms
81
00:04:13.920 --> 00:04:14.920
working way
82
00:04:14.920 --> 00:04:19.840
around your sides kind of like this, and I don't want to see a lot of kind of
83
00:04:19.840 --> 00:04:20.560
reaching
84
00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:27.060
and diving or bending down like lots of level changes and width changes tend to
85
00:04:27.060 --> 00:04:28.000
create really
86
00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.640
poor low point control.
87
00:04:30.640 --> 00:04:34.560
And the last one is smoothly applied force.
88
00:04:34.560 --> 00:04:38.310
Most bad wedge players, especially when we look at distance control, tend to
89
00:04:38.310 --> 00:04:39.120
either speed
90
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:44.400
it up a lot in transition or they tend to speed it up on the way through.
91
00:04:44.400 --> 00:04:47.680
Usually when you speed it up, that changes the constant radius.
92
00:04:47.680 --> 00:04:51.320
So you start getting two or three of these things out of position.
93
00:04:51.320 --> 00:04:55.220
And often when you speed it up, if you lengthen the radius, that causes you to
94
00:04:55.220 --> 00:04:55.960
tilt back.
95
00:04:55.960 --> 00:04:59.880
So now we've got all three problems of speed control as well as contact.
96
00:04:59.880 --> 00:05:06.120
So if you're struggling, you can look at the wedge videos and the wedge program
97
00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:06.440
.
98
00:05:06.440 --> 00:05:10.800
Otherwise, when you're looking at your video, you want to look at it from the
99
00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:11.680
perspective
100
00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:12.920
of these three keys.
101
00:05:12.920 --> 00:05:17.000
It's more about contact than I would focus mostly on these two.
102
00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:22.130
And if it's more about distance control, I'd focus mostly on smoothly applied
103
00:05:22.130 --> 00:05:22.760
force.
104
00:05:22.760 --> 00:05:25.890
Or another way of thinking that is you're going to first try to get solid
105
00:05:25.890 --> 00:05:26.520
contact and
106
00:05:26.520 --> 00:05:31.360
then you're going to work on loft and speed control to really dial in your
107
00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:33.720
distance control.
108
00:05:33.720 --> 00:05:38.040
So in the next video, we'll dive into the last of the four core scoring skills,
109
00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:38.040
which
110
00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:39.040
is putting.
111
00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:45.040
You're almost there, one step closer to being your own best golf coach.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.840
All right, golfers, in this video, we're going to take a look at the wedge shot
2
00:00:07.840 --> 00:00:08.680
benchmark.
3
00:00:08.680 --> 00:00:13.880
So basically, our wedge shots from inside of 100 yards.
4
00:00:13.880 --> 00:00:18.320
So the simplest stat is the up and down percentage.
5
00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:22.640
If I missed the green, was I able to save par on that shot?
6
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:28.200
5% of the time at 100 golf, 2/3 at pro.
7
00:00:28.200 --> 00:00:33.020
But again, that factors in-- if I'm a really good putter, that can artificially
8
00:00:33.020 --> 00:00:33.480
hit it.
9
00:00:33.480 --> 00:00:36.240
If I'm a bad putter, that artificially makes it lower.
10
00:00:36.240 --> 00:00:39.920
So let's separate putting in wedge play.
11
00:00:39.920 --> 00:00:43.460
To do that, we're going to look at that proximity or how much was the leave.
12
00:00:43.460 --> 00:00:49.080
How long was my put after my wedge shot?
13
00:00:49.080 --> 00:00:52.100
So a leave distance goal, we're going to break it down into a couple different
14
00:00:52.100 --> 00:00:52.680
benchmarks
15
00:00:52.680 --> 00:00:55.960
here, or less than 30 or 30 to 100.
16
00:00:55.960 --> 00:01:01.160
Or inside 30 yards, our goal is to get it inside 8 feet, more in this 4 to 8
17
00:01:01.160 --> 00:01:02.680
foot zone, especially
18
00:01:02.680 --> 00:01:07.440
when you start getting into like 10 yards from the pin.
19
00:01:07.440 --> 00:01:13.000
You'll see that it just gradually increases up until we get to the 100.
20
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:17.530
So I usually give most people that target of that 4 to 8 foot zone from less
21
00:01:17.530 --> 00:01:18.360
than 30
22
00:01:18.360 --> 00:01:20.360
yards, from 30 to 100.
23
00:01:20.360 --> 00:01:25.850
We know from the iron play that 100 is 16 feet, so that gives us kind of that
24
00:01:25.850 --> 00:01:27.200
30, that 10
25
00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:30.520
to 16 foot zone.
26
00:01:30.520 --> 00:01:33.460
You'll see when we start getting up towards 100, now there's a much bigger
27
00:01:33.460 --> 00:01:34.520
difference,
28
00:01:34.520 --> 00:01:40.760
because at 100 yards, the higher handicap golfers were at about 45 feet, it was
29
00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:41.400
rounded
30
00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:47.750
up to 50 to keep it nice and easy for most golfers to remember where you're
31
00:01:47.750 --> 00:01:49.000
targeting.
32
00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:54.290
So what we'll see from the putting videos is that if you're not inside 16 feet,
33
00:01:54.290 --> 00:01:55.040
20 feet,
34
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:58.560
whatever it may be, you have a very low chance of actually making the putt,
35
00:01:58.560 --> 00:01:59.280
even if you hit
36
00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:01.040
a good putt.
37
00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:05.780
So then the other way that I kind of, this is easier if you're keeping stats
38
00:02:05.780 --> 00:02:06.480
like I showed
39
00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:10.400
on that Excel spreadsheet in the iron play, but if you're just kind of
40
00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:11.800
benchmarking mentally,
41
00:02:11.800 --> 00:02:16.590
I usually do 20 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards, because they're pretty easy numbers
42
00:02:16.590 --> 00:02:17.280
to remember
43
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:21.840
for toward range, you got 6 feet, 12 feet, 16 feet.
44
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:26.640
So 6 feet double, and then 16 feet we know from the iron play.
45
00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:32.270
If you wanted to figure out the exact percentage, 20 to 60 yards is about 12%,
46
00:02:32.270 --> 00:02:34.040
60 to 100 yards
47
00:02:34.040 --> 00:02:37.100
is about 8%.
48
00:02:37.100 --> 00:02:43.250
So obviously the closer you get, the harder it is to get the percentage really
49
00:02:43.250 --> 00:02:43.920
low.
50
00:02:43.920 --> 00:02:46.920
So that's why these numbers go up, but it gives us this window.
51
00:02:46.920 --> 00:02:51.840
If you get most of your wedge shots inside that four to eight foot zone, or
52
00:02:51.840 --> 00:02:52.920
your distance
53
00:02:52.920 --> 00:02:58.080
wedge is inside that 15 foot zone, you're doing really well.
54
00:02:58.080 --> 00:03:03.440
But again, pick the numbers that are one step ahead of where you're at.
55
00:03:03.440 --> 00:03:08.190
And ultimately, because this takes a little less athleticism, it can be more
56
00:03:08.190 --> 00:03:09.280
frustrating.
57
00:03:09.280 --> 00:03:13.640
There are techniques that make this easier, and that's what we'll cover in the
58
00:03:13.640 --> 00:03:14.320
next slide.
59
00:03:14.320 --> 00:03:17.630
But if you struggle with it, don't think that just because it's shorter, it's
60
00:03:17.630 --> 00:03:18.120
an easier
61
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:19.200
shot.
62
00:03:19.200 --> 00:03:23.560
In some ways, it's just different skills than, say, hitting a golf ball really
63
00:03:23.560 --> 00:03:23.960
long.
64
00:03:23.960 --> 00:03:29.110
Okay, so the technique that relates to wedges, I explain it that to me there
65
00:03:29.110 --> 00:03:30.320
are three really
66
00:03:30.320 --> 00:03:33.520
big keys for wedge play, and if you want to get better at wedge play, you want
67
00:03:33.520 --> 00:03:33.960
to work
68
00:03:33.960 --> 00:03:37.520
on one or all of these three keys.
69
00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:42.050
So the centers being stacked is basically your upper body and your lower body
70
00:03:42.050 --> 00:03:42.800
being more
71
00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:45.440
on top of each other.
72
00:03:45.440 --> 00:03:48.400
This one helps with contact location and low point.
73
00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:54.060
A lot of bad wedge players get too much tilt this way or slide everything too
74
00:03:54.060 --> 00:03:54.960
far forward
75
00:03:54.960 --> 00:03:56.800
past the ball that way.
76
00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:01.720
So centers being stacked pretty much on top of the golf ball, maybe slightly
77
00:04:01.720 --> 00:04:02.400
ahead.
78
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:08.550
On radius is looking at the distance between the grip in your chest or your
79
00:04:08.550 --> 00:04:09.360
body.
80
00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:13.920
So you can still have some wrist involved, but I don't want to see the arms
81
00:04:13.920 --> 00:04:14.920
working way
82
00:04:14.920 --> 00:04:19.840
around your sides kind of like this, and I don't want to see a lot of kind of
83
00:04:19.840 --> 00:04:20.560
reaching
84
00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:27.060
and diving or bending down like lots of level changes and width changes tend to
85
00:04:27.060 --> 00:04:28.000
create really
86
00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.640
poor low point control.
87
00:04:30.640 --> 00:04:34.560
And the last one is smoothly applied force.
88
00:04:34.560 --> 00:04:38.310
Most bad wedge players, especially when we look at distance control, tend to
89
00:04:38.310 --> 00:04:39.120
either speed
90
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:44.400
it up a lot in transition or they tend to speed it up on the way through.
91
00:04:44.400 --> 00:04:47.680
Usually when you speed it up, that changes the constant radius.
92
00:04:47.680 --> 00:04:51.320
So you start getting two or three of these things out of position.
93
00:04:51.320 --> 00:04:55.220
And often when you speed it up, if you lengthen the radius, that causes you to
94
00:04:55.220 --> 00:04:55.960
tilt back.
95
00:04:55.960 --> 00:04:59.880
So now we've got all three problems of speed control as well as contact.
96
00:04:59.880 --> 00:05:06.120
So if you're struggling, you can look at the wedge videos and the wedge program
97
00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:06.440
.
98
00:05:06.440 --> 00:05:10.800
Otherwise, when you're looking at your video, you want to look at it from the
99
00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:11.680
perspective
100
00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:12.920
of these three keys.
101
00:05:12.920 --> 00:05:17.000
It's more about contact than I would focus mostly on these two.
102
00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:22.130
And if it's more about distance control, I'd focus mostly on smoothly applied
103
00:05:22.130 --> 00:05:22.760
force.
104
00:05:22.760 --> 00:05:25.890
Or another way of thinking that is you're going to first try to get solid
105
00:05:25.890 --> 00:05:26.520
contact and
106
00:05:26.520 --> 00:05:31.360
then you're going to work on loft and speed control to really dial in your
107
00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:33.720
distance control.
108
00:05:33.720 --> 00:05:38.040
So in the next video, we'll dive into the last of the four core scoring skills,
109
00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:38.040
which
110
00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:39.040
is putting.
111
00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:45.040
You're almost there, one step closer to being your own best golf coach.
