Simplify your understanding of solid contact

Solid contact issues can be identified by looking at three specific snap shots. P6 (shaft parallel before impact). P7 (Impact). P8 (shaft parallel after impact). By looking at these three points, you can figure out the big areas to focus on when trying to hit the ball more solidly.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.280
All right, golfers, in this video, we're going to dig into solid contact.

2
00:00:08.280 --> 00:00:11.930
This is probably one of my favorite things to improve because nothing feels

3
00:00:11.930 --> 00:00:12.720
better than

4
00:00:12.720 --> 00:00:17.360
a well-struck golf ball right out of the middle of the face.

5
00:00:17.360 --> 00:00:21.360
We are going to tailor this more towards iron play versus driver.

6
00:00:21.360 --> 00:00:26.270
Driver is more about that flat spot and adjusting your T height or little

7
00:00:26.270 --> 00:00:27.400
variables to help

8
00:00:27.400 --> 00:00:28.560
control the height.

9
00:00:28.560 --> 00:00:32.170
When it comes to solid contact with the irons, it's about ground contact and

10
00:00:32.170 --> 00:00:33.820
low point control,

11
00:00:33.820 --> 00:00:38.170
and that's a little bit more tricky, but what we saw in the benchmarks program,

12
00:00:38.170 --> 00:00:39.040
iron play

13
00:00:39.040 --> 00:00:43.600
is about 40% of your scoring difference.

14
00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:48.360
So while it's tricky, it's very worthwhile to invest time into improving.

15
00:00:48.360 --> 00:00:52.520
So when it comes to solid contact, we're going to focus on what the club is

16
00:00:52.520 --> 00:00:53.240
doing from this

17
00:00:53.240 --> 00:01:00.080
position here, delivery position or P6, all the way through impact and into P8.

18
00:01:00.080 --> 00:01:05.070
So as a rough shape, if we start at impact, we're trying to have our hands

19
00:01:05.070 --> 00:01:06.280
slightly ahead

20
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:11.960
of the golf ball, but swinging roughly on plane so that the bottom of the swing

21
00:01:11.960 --> 00:01:12.800
is down in

22
00:01:12.800 --> 00:01:18.800
the ground a little bit, but four inches out in front of the golf ball.

23
00:01:18.800 --> 00:01:24.260
In order to do that, we need to be coming into a good delivery position.

24
00:01:24.260 --> 00:01:28.160
Now this is technically a little bit past delivery, but this is a really easy

25
00:01:28.160 --> 00:01:28.560
one to

26
00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:29.880
identify.

27
00:01:29.880 --> 00:01:34.900
When the club is parallel to the ground, like it is here, you want the club to

28
00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:35.640
be in front

29
00:01:35.640 --> 00:01:39.930
of your body or slightly in front of your shoulders with the button and the

30
00:01:39.930 --> 00:01:40.800
club roughly

31
00:01:40.800 --> 00:01:43.520
even with the back of the golf ball.

32
00:01:43.520 --> 00:01:47.690
From the down the line, you would want the club head in line with the hands or

33
00:01:47.690 --> 00:01:48.240
slightly

34
00:01:48.240 --> 00:01:51.280
in line with the hand or slightly inside the hands depending on what ball

35
00:01:51.280 --> 00:01:52.000
flight you're

36
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:53.000
trying to hit.

37
00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:57.160
When we go through to our follow through, we want to make sure that we stayed

38
00:01:57.160 --> 00:01:57.920
in our spine

39
00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:00.520
angle so we didn't stand up.

40
00:02:00.520 --> 00:02:06.320
In fact, our tilt is going to reach its maximum right around this position.

41
00:02:06.320 --> 00:02:11.230
So between impact and this position, you should actually see that right

42
00:02:11.230 --> 00:02:12.920
shoulder getting closer

43
00:02:12.920 --> 00:02:16.640
to the ground, not standing up.

44
00:02:16.640 --> 00:02:19.700
So we want to make sure that we're getting into a really good width or

45
00:02:19.700 --> 00:02:20.800
controlling the

46
00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:23.960
widest point of the swing being more of that follow through.

47
00:02:23.960 --> 00:02:29.440
So we want to see arm extension from impact to this position here, not arm

48
00:02:29.440 --> 00:02:30.360
bending.

49
00:02:30.360 --> 00:02:35.000
If you master those, you're well on your way to mastering ground contact.

50
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:38.690
Okay, so shaft parallel in the downswing, here are those key pieces we talked

51
00:02:38.690 --> 00:02:39.240
about.

52
00:02:39.240 --> 00:02:42.590
We already want to have a pretty good lead shoulder to hip relationship, so we

53
00:02:42.590 --> 00:02:42.920
don't

54
00:02:42.920 --> 00:02:47.080
want to have a big tilt this way and we don't want to have a big lunge that way

55
00:02:47.080 --> 00:02:47.200
.

56
00:02:47.200 --> 00:02:51.360
We want this leg checkpoint where the hands are slightly inside the shoulder

57
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:51.680
and the

58
00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:55.320
butt of the club is roughly even with the golf ball.

59
00:02:55.320 --> 00:03:00.740
Oftentimes golfers upper body gets too far forward and their lower body or

60
00:03:00.740 --> 00:03:01.480
sorry, their

61
00:03:01.480 --> 00:03:04.720
arms cast and release back here.

62
00:03:04.720 --> 00:03:10.010
It's almost impossible to get shaft lean from that position or at the very

63
00:03:10.010 --> 00:03:10.720
least, if

64
00:03:10.720 --> 00:03:15.820
I do, I'm going to be in a weak position, so I'm going to struggle more with

65
00:03:15.820 --> 00:03:16.600
distance.

66
00:03:16.600 --> 00:03:20.160
But oftentimes what happens is if the arms are way further back, then you have

67
00:03:20.160 --> 00:03:20.600
to have

68
00:03:20.600 --> 00:03:24.910
some type of body stall and stand up to change the low point or you start

69
00:03:24.910 --> 00:03:26.480
bending your arms.

70
00:03:26.480 --> 00:03:29.680
Both of those cause consistency issues.

71
00:03:29.680 --> 00:03:36.080
From the down the line, we want to see the club head basically in line with the

72
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:36.720
golf ball

73
00:03:36.720 --> 00:03:41.430
and look at the club face, if it's pointing more this way, that's open, if it's

74
00:03:41.430 --> 00:03:41.800
pointing

75
00:03:41.800 --> 00:03:45.380
more that way, that's close, so if it's pointing like this, that's open, if it

76
00:03:45.380 --> 00:03:46.280
's pointing like

77
00:03:46.280 --> 00:03:48.520
that, that's more closed.

78
00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:53.000
So this is a really good checkpoint to see the club head.

79
00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:58.500
If it's open, then I suggest comparing this position to where it was here in

80
00:03:58.500 --> 00:04:00.160
the backswing.

81
00:04:00.160 --> 00:04:04.930
So basically what a lot of golfers do is it's fine during the takeaway and then

82
00:04:04.930 --> 00:04:06.120
their transition

83
00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:08.240
move opens it up.

84
00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:11.900
Also if we're looking at this position and this is out of sequence, then I

85
00:04:11.900 --> 00:04:12.520
would look

86
00:04:12.520 --> 00:04:16.260
at, we're out of position rather, I would look at my body movements that I have

87
00:04:16.260 --> 00:04:16.720
a bunch

88
00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:20.680
of sway, that I have a funky transition move.

89
00:04:20.680 --> 00:04:26.140
So this would be my trigger to investigate what happened beforehand.

90
00:04:26.140 --> 00:04:30.300
But if this point is pretty good, then I'm not too worried about any little

91
00:04:30.300 --> 00:04:30.960
nuance that

92
00:04:30.960 --> 00:04:34.960
might be going on in your backswing or at the top of the swing.

93
00:04:34.960 --> 00:04:38.900
But looking here, we're looking at the clubface and we're looking at the left

94
00:04:38.900 --> 00:04:39.960
wrist being

95
00:04:39.960 --> 00:04:45.920
more flat or bowed, this is kind of a evidence that comparing this to that P2

96
00:04:45.920 --> 00:04:47.360
or shaft parallel

97
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:51.880
in the backswing is a good way to look at the motorcycle movement.

98
00:04:51.880 --> 00:04:59.920
I also want to look at my spine maintaining its posture and I want to look at

99
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:02.080
pelvis turn

100
00:05:02.080 --> 00:05:03.040
versus thrust.

101
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:08.440
So compared to where I was at set up, is my pelvis moving in towards the golf

102
00:05:08.440 --> 00:05:09.000
ball or

103
00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:13.440
is it basically stayed a little bit more towards the back of the heels?

104
00:05:13.440 --> 00:05:18.790
This is a good place to check if the right leg is thrusting in past that foot,

105
00:05:18.790 --> 00:05:19.320
kind of

106
00:05:19.320 --> 00:05:24.720
going this way, that's an indicator that I'm doing more of that thrust move.

107
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:29.730
I also want to make sure that at this point, my chest is roughly facing the

108
00:05:29.730 --> 00:05:30.560
golf ball or

109
00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:33.440
the very least, it's not way back there.

110
00:05:33.440 --> 00:05:38.880
If it's pointing way behind the golf ball, that's almost always compliment to

111
00:05:38.880 --> 00:05:39.360
an arm

112
00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:40.880
throw pattern.

113
00:05:40.880 --> 00:05:45.560
So this is a good position to investigate and then you can figure out if the

114
00:05:45.560 --> 00:05:46.280
movement

115
00:05:46.280 --> 00:05:51.860
happened more in the backswing or more in transition that disrupted this.

116
00:05:51.860 --> 00:05:57.590
We've analyzed impact a bunch, so remember we've got the shaft plane, the arm

117
00:05:57.590 --> 00:05:58.600
shallowing

118
00:05:58.600 --> 00:06:02.000
structure, the amount of body turn as well as keeping the tilt.

119
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:07.200
We've got the shaft lean, the axis tilt and that impact line as well as the br

120
00:06:07.200 --> 00:06:09.280
acing movement.

121
00:06:09.280 --> 00:06:13.440
Those are really the big pieces that you want to look at at impact, but now you

122
00:06:13.440 --> 00:06:15.640
can see if

123
00:06:15.640 --> 00:06:19.960
everything was kind of off here, then it's going to be hard to get into that

124
00:06:19.960 --> 00:06:20.760
solid impact

125
00:06:20.760 --> 00:06:24.040
position as well.

126
00:06:24.040 --> 00:06:27.790
And then lastly, looking at the follow through, this is maintaining that spine

127
00:06:27.790 --> 00:06:28.320
angle.

128
00:06:28.320 --> 00:06:35.800
We had it impact, right shoulder getting slightly lower, making sure that when

129
00:06:35.800 --> 00:06:37.080
you turn to look

130
00:06:37.080 --> 00:06:43.280
at the target, your head is on a slight angle and not getting more vertical.

131
00:06:43.280 --> 00:06:46.360
Plenty of body rotation at this point.

132
00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:50.480
Your hips are pretty close to pointing at the target, same as your chest.

133
00:06:50.480 --> 00:06:57.840
This is the club checkpoint number two, so looking from this down the line is

134
00:06:57.840 --> 00:06:58.520
the club

135
00:06:58.520 --> 00:07:02.830
head well outside the hands, that can happen if I have more extension and the

136
00:07:02.830 --> 00:07:03.880
path is probably

137
00:07:03.880 --> 00:07:09.910
six, seven degrees inside out, or is the club exiting way low down by my knees,

138
00:07:09.910 --> 00:07:10.480
that would

139
00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:15.880
be more outside in, typically more of an upper body dominant pattern.

140
00:07:15.880 --> 00:07:22.180
So path checkpoint, whoops, so path checkpoint one is here, looking at the club

141
00:07:22.180 --> 00:07:23.400
head relation

142
00:07:23.400 --> 00:07:27.560
to the hands, and then path checkpoint two is here, looking at the club

143
00:07:27.560 --> 00:07:28.480
checkpoint with

144
00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:29.960
the hands.

145
00:07:29.960 --> 00:07:34.540
In line with the hands are slightly out to the right is typically more

146
00:07:34.540 --> 00:07:35.600
preferred.

147
00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:38.840
In this position, we can also look at ulnar deviation.

148
00:07:38.840 --> 00:07:44.880
So there are two times where I look at ulnar deviation.

149
00:07:44.880 --> 00:07:50.150
In is here, so ulnar deviation makes it easier to get the club in line with

150
00:07:50.150 --> 00:07:51.200
that forearm

151
00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:52.400
when it's down like this.

152
00:07:52.400 --> 00:07:56.560
That's often a sign that I've got too much radial deviation.

153
00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:03.600
And then here at this position is one of the easy places to see if the wrist is

154
00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:04.480
started

155
00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:12.420
to rehinge too soon, and usually means that there was some type of arm throw or

156
00:08:12.420 --> 00:08:13.560
extra arm

157
00:08:13.560 --> 00:08:16.080
action during the release.

158
00:08:16.080 --> 00:08:21.040
So looking at these positions, we can get a real good snapshot as far as how

159
00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:21.880
the release

160
00:08:21.880 --> 00:08:26.140
is happening, and then we can circle back to do we need to prioritize

161
00:08:26.140 --> 00:08:27.320
transition, the

162
00:08:27.320 --> 00:08:30.240
backswing, or is it just a release issue?

163
00:08:30.240 --> 00:08:34.530
One way you can identify if it's a release issue is if you can do, if you can

164
00:08:34.530 --> 00:08:35.200
hit these

165
00:08:35.200 --> 00:08:40.400
positions in nine to three, so to put yourself on video doing a nine to three,

166
00:08:40.400 --> 00:08:41.200
if it looks

167
00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:47.240
significantly better, then it's usually more of a transition or a pivot issue.

168
00:08:47.240 --> 00:08:50.630
But if you have a hard time doing it, even in slow motion on this, then it's

169
00:08:50.630 --> 00:08:51.080
usually

170
00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:53.200
more of a release issue.

171
00:08:53.200 --> 00:08:58.080
Okay, so remember the face on view is where most of the magic comes from,

172
00:08:58.080 --> 00:08:59.080
especially for

173
00:08:59.080 --> 00:09:00.560
solid contact.

174
00:09:00.560 --> 00:09:06.520
So here we've got different camera angles, but I've got these lines in here.

175
00:09:06.520 --> 00:09:10.730
You can pause the video, or you can go to John Michael Field's YouTube page to

176
00:09:10.730 --> 00:09:11.200
look for

177
00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:15.680
some good quality videos, you can find these ones and look at it yourself.

178
00:09:15.680 --> 00:09:19.930
So we've got hitting all those checkpoints, hands in front, arms extend,

179
00:09:19.930 --> 00:09:20.800
maintaining the

180
00:09:20.800 --> 00:09:26.160
shoulder, right shoulder down, ulnar deviation, good arm width.

181
00:09:26.160 --> 00:09:32.300
Same thing here, hands in front, shaft lean, good arm width, good bracing

182
00:09:32.300 --> 00:09:33.400
position.

183
00:09:33.400 --> 00:09:36.640
You're going to get bored of this.

184
00:09:36.640 --> 00:09:42.150
Hands in front, impact position, body still down, shoulder at its lowest point,

185
00:09:42.150 --> 00:09:42.560
good

186
00:09:42.560 --> 00:09:50.120
ulnar deviation, arm extension, good bracing.

187
00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:56.690
On top, we've got hands in front, good shaft lean, a little less of the ulnar

188
00:09:56.690 --> 00:09:59.200
deviation.

189
00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:03.600
It could be the shot, but that's also some of just Rory's swing move.

190
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:07.640
But good bracing position, right shoulder is down.

191
00:10:07.640 --> 00:10:12.410
So he's maintained his core and his arm structure, even if the wrists are a

192
00:10:12.410 --> 00:10:13.960
little bit more nuanced

193
00:10:13.960 --> 00:10:20.440
for his delivery position.

194
00:10:20.440 --> 00:10:25.030
Another good classic one here, we've got hands in front, helps create the shaft

195
00:10:25.030 --> 00:10:25.560
lean with

196
00:10:25.560 --> 00:10:29.750
the good body rotation, right shoulder at its lowest point and good ulnar

197
00:10:29.750 --> 00:10:30.680
deviation or

198
00:10:30.680 --> 00:10:34.500
arm extension in that follow through.

199
00:10:34.500 --> 00:10:37.760
Again same thing here with Adam Scott.

200
00:10:37.760 --> 00:10:41.880
So we've got arms in front in that delivery position, good wipe.

201
00:10:41.880 --> 00:10:49.820
You can see the elbow working in front of the hip and then good arm extension

202
00:10:49.820 --> 00:10:50.560
there.

203
00:10:50.560 --> 00:10:56.570
Then we mentioned when we took a look, not a ton of the elbow working in front,

204
00:10:56.570 --> 00:10:57.520
so perhaps

205
00:10:57.520 --> 00:11:02.960
a little bit of some shoulder issue going on, but really good follow through

206
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:03.900
position,

207
00:11:03.900 --> 00:11:08.240
good shaft lean and pretty good delivery position.

208
00:11:08.240 --> 00:11:13.960
So overall checks all the boxes.

209
00:11:13.960 --> 00:11:18.280
Another good one here, camera angle is a little low and a little kind of target

210
00:11:18.280 --> 00:11:19.280
side, so that

211
00:11:19.280 --> 00:11:24.180
skews things a little bit, but arms are in front, hands are in front of impact,

212
00:11:24.180 --> 00:11:24.600
good

213
00:11:24.600 --> 00:11:31.000
arm extension, good bracing position, leg straightening, all that good stuff.

214
00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:35.390
So from the down the line, we can now start to see some of these control

215
00:11:35.390 --> 00:11:36.320
elements and

216
00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:38.800
we can look at the shaft plane.

217
00:11:38.800 --> 00:11:44.600
So overall, it's harder to find really perfect where the camera was at the

218
00:11:44.600 --> 00:11:46.000
right height.

219
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:49.470
So I'll show you another example there where you have to be careful, but club

220
00:11:49.470 --> 00:11:50.120
is slightly

221
00:11:50.120 --> 00:11:55.490
inside the hands to slightly outside the hands, club face is a little bit past

222
00:11:55.490 --> 00:11:56.680
vertical to

223
00:11:56.680 --> 00:12:02.030
close the vertical there, maintaining the spine angle, right shoulder getting

224
00:12:02.030 --> 00:12:02.600
down, good

225
00:12:02.600 --> 00:12:06.480
body rotation, all these good elements.

226
00:12:06.480 --> 00:12:10.180
Here's another one right in line with the hands and I stopped that one a little

227
00:12:10.180 --> 00:12:10.600
short

228
00:12:10.600 --> 00:12:14.210
so of when it gets in line with the hands so you can see it a little bit

229
00:12:14.210 --> 00:12:15.080
clearer, but

230
00:12:15.080 --> 00:12:17.280
those are the two big path checkpoints.

231
00:12:17.280 --> 00:12:19.680
This is a really good height of the camera angle.

232
00:12:19.680 --> 00:12:25.640
So you'll see how in line and how straight all that was.

233
00:12:25.640 --> 00:12:28.990
Right arm bent, you can see the left arm, it's probably a little bit tough, but

234
00:12:28.990 --> 00:12:29.320
if you

235
00:12:29.320 --> 00:12:33.020
look at the video, you'll see it a little bit more clear, right shoulder at its

236
00:12:33.020 --> 00:12:33.440
lowest

237
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:37.720
point, maintaining the spine angle, all good pieces.

238
00:12:37.720 --> 00:12:41.880
This is the one where we can see that the camera angle is a little high and a

239
00:12:41.880 --> 00:12:42.120
little

240
00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:43.960
bit more towards the target line.

241
00:12:43.960 --> 00:12:46.780
That makes it look like this is coming well from the inside.

242
00:12:46.780 --> 00:12:51.890
So I put this in here just as more of a cautionary, you have to make sure that

243
00:12:51.890 --> 00:12:52.920
if you're going

244
00:12:52.920 --> 00:13:01.170
to look at path, either verify how it looks on radar system like track man or

245
00:13:01.170 --> 00:13:02.440
quad, but

246
00:13:02.440 --> 00:13:09.190
at the very least, make sure like you use ball flight and how much it's curving

247
00:13:09.190 --> 00:13:09.680
to give

248
00:13:09.680 --> 00:13:14.030
you a rough snapshot, but you'll see the difference between if the camera is a

249
00:13:14.030 --> 00:13:15.160
little bit off

250
00:13:15.160 --> 00:13:19.590
here, especially if it's a little too high or too low, that will influence how

251
00:13:19.590 --> 00:13:20.200
the club

252
00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:21.200
is going to look.

253
00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:25.360
If you're doing it with yourself, all that really matters is that you keep it

254
00:13:25.360 --> 00:13:26.160
consistent,

255
00:13:26.160 --> 00:13:29.160
but if you're trying to be relatively accurate, then you want it at about the

256
00:13:29.160 --> 00:13:29.720
same height

257
00:13:29.720 --> 00:13:31.960
and even with the hands.

258
00:13:31.960 --> 00:13:36.400
But we can see more clothes coming from the inside.

259
00:13:36.400 --> 00:13:40.070
Those are two good checkpoints, but all the other pieces you can see are

260
00:13:40.070 --> 00:13:40.960
relatively easy

261
00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:43.700
to see, even if the camera angle is a little bit off.
