Too much curve comes from the swing to path relationship
When looking at your path issues, you'll want to start with two key snap shots. P6 (shaft parallel before impact) and P8 (shaft parallel after impact). These two positions are really helpful for seeing the path patterns as well as your club face pattern.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.000
All right golfers, when analyzing your video, slice and hook is actually one of
2
00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:09.480
the easier
3
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:10.880
patterns to look at.
4
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:14.180
So even though it's one of the more frustrating patterns to play, it's going to
5
00:00:14.180 --> 00:00:14.600
be pretty
6
00:00:14.600 --> 00:00:17.680
simple when we're looking at it on video.
7
00:00:17.680 --> 00:00:19.920
We're just going to use these two checkpoints.
8
00:00:19.920 --> 00:00:23.770
We're going to look at where is the club compared to your hands during the down
9
00:00:23.770 --> 00:00:24.600
swing,
10
00:00:24.600 --> 00:00:28.000
and what is that club face orientation.
11
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.540
And then we're going to look at it in the follow through at about the same
12
00:00:31.540 --> 00:00:32.120
point when
13
00:00:32.120 --> 00:00:35.000
the club is parallel to the ground.
14
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.880
So when the club is inside your hands, that's going to be more of a hook bias.
15
00:00:41.880 --> 00:00:45.730
When the club is outside your hands, that's going to be more of a slice bias or
16
00:00:45.730 --> 00:00:47.480
path outside.
17
00:00:47.480 --> 00:00:51.830
So if the club is way outside the hands, you want to look at the top of the
18
00:00:51.830 --> 00:00:52.600
swing to see
19
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:56.560
if there was anything contributing to the club getting outside, or you look at
20
00:00:56.560 --> 00:00:56.840
your
21
00:00:56.840 --> 00:01:02.600
arm structure to see if you have enough arm shallowing, etc.
22
00:01:02.600 --> 00:01:07.240
If you have the club too far inside, you look at your early extension, you look
23
00:01:07.240 --> 00:01:07.880
at the arms
24
00:01:07.880 --> 00:01:14.040
getting too far back down behind, kind of like this.
25
00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:18.660
If we are looking at the follow through position, we're basically looking to
26
00:01:18.660 --> 00:01:19.760
see that the club
27
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:26.000
is close to vertical, so that would be more of the club face orientation.
28
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:28.440
And I should go back.
29
00:01:28.440 --> 00:01:33.260
When we're looking at club face orientation here, a little bit past vertical is
30
00:01:33.260 --> 00:01:33.640
more
31
00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:38.200
less square or close to, let's say between vertical and spine angle.
32
00:01:38.200 --> 00:01:41.880
If it's more pointing up towards the sky, that's going to be more open.
33
00:01:41.880 --> 00:01:46.480
If it's more pointing down towards the ground, that's going to be more closed.
34
00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:49.000
In this position, it's the opposite.
35
00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:52.980
So when it's outside there, the more that it's pointing up towards the sky,
36
00:01:52.980 --> 00:01:53.480
that's
37
00:01:53.480 --> 00:01:56.160
going to be open, and the more that it's pointing down towards the ground, that
38
00:01:56.160 --> 00:01:56.280
's
39
00:01:56.280 --> 00:01:57.800
going to be closed.
40
00:01:57.800 --> 00:02:03.920
And we're looking at the position of the club head compared to the hands.
41
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:07.480
In general, what you'll see is, if the club is in a good position here, and
42
00:02:07.480 --> 00:02:08.000
then in a
43
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.630
poor position there in the follow through MP8, then it's more of a release
44
00:02:12.630 --> 00:02:13.320
issue.
45
00:02:13.320 --> 00:02:19.190
If the club is way out of position at P6, then it was more of a transition and/
46
00:02:19.190 --> 00:02:20.080
or backswing
47
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:23.000
issue.
48
00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:27.630
If it's more of a release issue, you'll tend to see either the club go too high
49
00:02:27.630 --> 00:02:28.440
from again
50
00:02:28.440 --> 00:02:33.850
early extension or more the arms catching up, often if they've been too far
51
00:02:33.850 --> 00:02:34.800
behind you during
52
00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:35.960
the downswing.
53
00:02:35.960 --> 00:02:41.540
If the club is coming down more this way, that's often either I don't have a
54
00:02:41.540 --> 00:02:42.600
good bracing
55
00:02:42.600 --> 00:02:48.990
hip position, so I don't have any axis tilt, or my shoulders are rotating more
56
00:02:48.990 --> 00:02:49.880
in a steep
57
00:02:49.880 --> 00:02:53.280
position on top of the ball, kind of like so.
58
00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:58.860
So here's a number of examples, and we'll just see quickly, if the hands are in
59
00:02:58.860 --> 00:02:59.280
line
60
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:02.470
with the club, if you have the camera setup right, then that's going to be
61
00:03:02.470 --> 00:03:04.440
slightly outside.
62
00:03:04.440 --> 00:03:07.860
So a little draw bias would be just on the inside of your hands with the
63
00:03:07.860 --> 00:03:08.680
shorter clubs
64
00:03:08.680 --> 00:03:16.030
to a little bit further inside with the longer clubs, to just on the outside
65
00:03:16.030 --> 00:03:17.080
there.
66
00:03:17.080 --> 00:03:22.220
So again, pretty classic here, just inside, club is slightly turned from
67
00:03:22.220 --> 00:03:23.400
vertical to that
68
00:03:23.400 --> 00:03:27.750
goes, if you continue that clip, the club exits right through the hands, which
69
00:03:27.750 --> 00:03:28.080
you can
70
00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:31.400
see the club pretty vertical there.
71
00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:35.750
This is a bad camera angle, but if you were to look at it, the hands would be
72
00:03:35.750 --> 00:03:35.960
slightly
73
00:03:35.960 --> 00:03:40.510
inside to slightly outside on this shot, and the club face would be in a pretty
74
00:03:40.510 --> 00:03:40.960
square
75
00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:44.560
position in both, maybe slightly closed.
76
00:03:44.560 --> 00:03:48.150
Again, not perfect camera angle, it's a little closed, which makes the club
77
00:03:48.150 --> 00:03:48.800
look like it's
78
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:50.080
more inside.
79
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:55.360
So again, you have to be careful with that, but you can always compare the ball
80
00:03:55.360 --> 00:03:55.920
flight
81
00:03:55.920 --> 00:03:59.550
with the quality of contact to kind of get a rough estimate as to what your
82
00:03:59.550 --> 00:04:00.200
path would
83
00:04:00.200 --> 00:04:01.200
be.
84
00:04:01.200 --> 00:04:04.910
But you can see club face will still be, you can still read the club face, even
85
00:04:04.910 --> 00:04:05.360
if the
86
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:09.200
path is, if the camera angle is a little off for reading the path.
87
00:04:09.200 --> 00:04:14.300
So like I said, real quick check for if you're slicing or hooking, check there
88
00:04:14.300 --> 00:04:15.420
at P6, Chef
89
00:04:15.420 --> 00:04:19.050
Farewell, look at where is the club compared to the hands and what's the club
90
00:04:19.050 --> 00:04:20.280
face orientation,
91
00:04:20.280 --> 00:04:24.760
and then look in the follow through compared to the hands club face orientation
92
00:04:24.760 --> 00:04:25.080
.
93
00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:29.000
That'll give you a rough estimate as far as what you're doing face the path
94
00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:29.680
during either
95
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:32.800
the early part of your swing or during the release, and that's how you're going
96
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:33.320
to solve
97
00:04:33.320 --> 00:04:39.280
your slice or your hook as your own best golf coach.
1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.000
All right golfers, when analyzing your video, slice and hook is actually one of
2
00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:09.480
the easier
3
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:10.880
patterns to look at.
4
00:00:10.880 --> 00:00:14.180
So even though it's one of the more frustrating patterns to play, it's going to
5
00:00:14.180 --> 00:00:14.600
be pretty
6
00:00:14.600 --> 00:00:17.680
simple when we're looking at it on video.
7
00:00:17.680 --> 00:00:19.920
We're just going to use these two checkpoints.
8
00:00:19.920 --> 00:00:23.770
We're going to look at where is the club compared to your hands during the down
9
00:00:23.770 --> 00:00:24.600
swing,
10
00:00:24.600 --> 00:00:28.000
and what is that club face orientation.
11
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.540
And then we're going to look at it in the follow through at about the same
12
00:00:31.540 --> 00:00:32.120
point when
13
00:00:32.120 --> 00:00:35.000
the club is parallel to the ground.
14
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.880
So when the club is inside your hands, that's going to be more of a hook bias.
15
00:00:41.880 --> 00:00:45.730
When the club is outside your hands, that's going to be more of a slice bias or
16
00:00:45.730 --> 00:00:47.480
path outside.
17
00:00:47.480 --> 00:00:51.830
So if the club is way outside the hands, you want to look at the top of the
18
00:00:51.830 --> 00:00:52.600
swing to see
19
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:56.560
if there was anything contributing to the club getting outside, or you look at
20
00:00:56.560 --> 00:00:56.840
your
21
00:00:56.840 --> 00:01:02.600
arm structure to see if you have enough arm shallowing, etc.
22
00:01:02.600 --> 00:01:07.240
If you have the club too far inside, you look at your early extension, you look
23
00:01:07.240 --> 00:01:07.880
at the arms
24
00:01:07.880 --> 00:01:14.040
getting too far back down behind, kind of like this.
25
00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:18.660
If we are looking at the follow through position, we're basically looking to
26
00:01:18.660 --> 00:01:19.760
see that the club
27
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:26.000
is close to vertical, so that would be more of the club face orientation.
28
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:28.440
And I should go back.
29
00:01:28.440 --> 00:01:33.260
When we're looking at club face orientation here, a little bit past vertical is
30
00:01:33.260 --> 00:01:33.640
more
31
00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:38.200
less square or close to, let's say between vertical and spine angle.
32
00:01:38.200 --> 00:01:41.880
If it's more pointing up towards the sky, that's going to be more open.
33
00:01:41.880 --> 00:01:46.480
If it's more pointing down towards the ground, that's going to be more closed.
34
00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:49.000
In this position, it's the opposite.
35
00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:52.980
So when it's outside there, the more that it's pointing up towards the sky,
36
00:01:52.980 --> 00:01:53.480
that's
37
00:01:53.480 --> 00:01:56.160
going to be open, and the more that it's pointing down towards the ground, that
38
00:01:56.160 --> 00:01:56.280
's
39
00:01:56.280 --> 00:01:57.800
going to be closed.
40
00:01:57.800 --> 00:02:03.920
And we're looking at the position of the club head compared to the hands.
41
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:07.480
In general, what you'll see is, if the club is in a good position here, and
42
00:02:07.480 --> 00:02:08.000
then in a
43
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.630
poor position there in the follow through MP8, then it's more of a release
44
00:02:12.630 --> 00:02:13.320
issue.
45
00:02:13.320 --> 00:02:19.190
If the club is way out of position at P6, then it was more of a transition and/
46
00:02:19.190 --> 00:02:20.080
or backswing
47
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:23.000
issue.
48
00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:27.630
If it's more of a release issue, you'll tend to see either the club go too high
49
00:02:27.630 --> 00:02:28.440
from again
50
00:02:28.440 --> 00:02:33.850
early extension or more the arms catching up, often if they've been too far
51
00:02:33.850 --> 00:02:34.800
behind you during
52
00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:35.960
the downswing.
53
00:02:35.960 --> 00:02:41.540
If the club is coming down more this way, that's often either I don't have a
54
00:02:41.540 --> 00:02:42.600
good bracing
55
00:02:42.600 --> 00:02:48.990
hip position, so I don't have any axis tilt, or my shoulders are rotating more
56
00:02:48.990 --> 00:02:49.880
in a steep
57
00:02:49.880 --> 00:02:53.280
position on top of the ball, kind of like so.
58
00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:58.860
So here's a number of examples, and we'll just see quickly, if the hands are in
59
00:02:58.860 --> 00:02:59.280
line
60
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:02.470
with the club, if you have the camera setup right, then that's going to be
61
00:03:02.470 --> 00:03:04.440
slightly outside.
62
00:03:04.440 --> 00:03:07.860
So a little draw bias would be just on the inside of your hands with the
63
00:03:07.860 --> 00:03:08.680
shorter clubs
64
00:03:08.680 --> 00:03:16.030
to a little bit further inside with the longer clubs, to just on the outside
65
00:03:16.030 --> 00:03:17.080
there.
66
00:03:17.080 --> 00:03:22.220
So again, pretty classic here, just inside, club is slightly turned from
67
00:03:22.220 --> 00:03:23.400
vertical to that
68
00:03:23.400 --> 00:03:27.750
goes, if you continue that clip, the club exits right through the hands, which
69
00:03:27.750 --> 00:03:28.080
you can
70
00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:31.400
see the club pretty vertical there.
71
00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:35.750
This is a bad camera angle, but if you were to look at it, the hands would be
72
00:03:35.750 --> 00:03:35.960
slightly
73
00:03:35.960 --> 00:03:40.510
inside to slightly outside on this shot, and the club face would be in a pretty
74
00:03:40.510 --> 00:03:40.960
square
75
00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:44.560
position in both, maybe slightly closed.
76
00:03:44.560 --> 00:03:48.150
Again, not perfect camera angle, it's a little closed, which makes the club
77
00:03:48.150 --> 00:03:48.800
look like it's
78
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:50.080
more inside.
79
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:55.360
So again, you have to be careful with that, but you can always compare the ball
80
00:03:55.360 --> 00:03:55.920
flight
81
00:03:55.920 --> 00:03:59.550
with the quality of contact to kind of get a rough estimate as to what your
82
00:03:59.550 --> 00:04:00.200
path would
83
00:04:00.200 --> 00:04:01.200
be.
84
00:04:01.200 --> 00:04:04.910
But you can see club face will still be, you can still read the club face, even
85
00:04:04.910 --> 00:04:05.360
if the
86
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:09.200
path is, if the camera angle is a little off for reading the path.
87
00:04:09.200 --> 00:04:14.300
So like I said, real quick check for if you're slicing or hooking, check there
88
00:04:14.300 --> 00:04:15.420
at P6, Chef
89
00:04:15.420 --> 00:04:19.050
Farewell, look at where is the club compared to the hands and what's the club
90
00:04:19.050 --> 00:04:20.280
face orientation,
91
00:04:20.280 --> 00:04:24.760
and then look in the follow through compared to the hands club face orientation
92
00:04:24.760 --> 00:04:25.080
.
93
00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:29.000
That'll give you a rough estimate as far as what you're doing face the path
94
00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:29.680
during either
95
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:32.800
the early part of your swing or during the release, and that's how you're going
96
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:33.320
to solve
97
00:04:33.320 --> 00:04:39.280
your slice or your hook as your own best golf coach.
