Hitting it on the heel is one of the most painful misses you'll want to solve right away!

When looking at a shank, analyze what caused the club to move too far away from you at impact (P7) compared to set up (P1). This is likely coming from one of a few different areas.

  • The weight moving into the toes
  • The upper body moving down into the ball
  • The arms extending out toward the ball too much

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.680
All right, golfers, let's tackle that annoying shank.

2
00:00:07.680 --> 00:00:13.260
So this is one of the more debilitating misses when you're analyzing it on

3
00:00:13.260 --> 00:00:14.120
video.

4
00:00:14.120 --> 00:00:18.940
I draw a bunch of lines and the main positions we're going to compare are P1 or

5
00:00:18.940 --> 00:00:19.600
set up to

6
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:21.720
P7 impact.

7
00:00:21.720 --> 00:00:27.300
So I have a line on the outside of the club, I have a line on my forehead, I

8
00:00:27.300 --> 00:00:28.520
have a vertical

9
00:00:28.520 --> 00:00:32.790
line on my tailbone and then I have a line just on the outside of my hand just

10
00:00:32.790 --> 00:00:33.160
kind of

11
00:00:33.160 --> 00:00:35.000
right there.

12
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:38.600
What I want to look for is which of these pieces are moving out towards the

13
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:39.360
golf ball.

14
00:00:39.360 --> 00:00:44.340
The two main reasons to cause the shank would be the club getting well out or

15
00:00:44.340 --> 00:00:45.280
the club being

16
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:46.760
more open.

17
00:00:46.760 --> 00:00:51.330
As I've worked with more and more shankers over the years, I think it's mostly

18
00:00:51.330 --> 00:00:51.880
the club

19
00:00:51.880 --> 00:00:56.640
going out and usually that happens when golfers feel too much the weight of the

20
00:00:56.640 --> 00:00:57.320
shaft.

21
00:00:57.320 --> 00:01:00.950
They're swinging the shaft and what they're holding at the golf ball rather

22
00:01:00.950 --> 00:01:01.800
than swinging

23
00:01:01.800 --> 00:01:07.280
the club head which is not on the same axis as the shaft.

24
00:01:07.280 --> 00:01:12.860
So one of the easy ways to diagnose what's going on is looking for did my head

25
00:01:12.860 --> 00:01:13.840
move forward

26
00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:18.900
or too much down, did my hands move out, did I just kind of throw the club out

27
00:01:18.900 --> 00:01:19.680
there because

28
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:24.280
the right arm was a little high and straightening so it got outside that line.

29
00:01:24.280 --> 00:01:30.590
My whole body shift into my toes which would show up as the butt moving off the

30
00:01:30.590 --> 00:01:31.720
line during

31
00:01:31.720 --> 00:01:33.480
the downswing.

32
00:01:33.480 --> 00:01:39.060
So this is the real quick setup that you can use video wise for identifying

33
00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:39.880
what's causing

34
00:01:39.880 --> 00:01:45.570
the shank and then ultimately it's getting recalibrated with either a body

35
00:01:45.570 --> 00:01:46.480
position, a

36
00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:50.040
weight distribution or the feeling of the club.

37
00:01:50.040 --> 00:01:55.020
Once you have that handled it's usually not too challenging to resolve your sh

38
00:01:55.020 --> 00:01:55.760
ank issue.
