How do the differences between iron and driver look on video?

The simplest place to start when analyzing your driver swing is to look at the flat spot. This is extending the impact position analysis to a few feet before and after impact. By doing so, you'll see if your driver issues are more of a pivot issue or an arm issue.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.240
All right, golfers, let's take a look at analyzing your driver swing.

2
00:00:09.240 --> 00:00:14.200
So in this video, we're going to talk about the real big pieces or I should say

3
00:00:14.200 --> 00:00:14.360
, we're

4
00:00:14.360 --> 00:00:19.650
going to boil down the driver swing into one key fundamental, which is creating

5
00:00:19.650 --> 00:00:20.240
the flat

6
00:00:20.240 --> 00:00:25.710
spot of the driver from the research I've seen and my own experience working

7
00:00:25.710 --> 00:00:27.000
with golfers.

8
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:31.870
This is the differentiator between golfers who drive the ball consistently

9
00:00:31.870 --> 00:00:32.740
solid as well

10
00:00:32.740 --> 00:00:35.680
as straight, not necessarily far.

11
00:00:35.680 --> 00:00:40.800
We'll cover that more in the speed or the distance analysis section.

12
00:00:40.800 --> 00:00:45.240
But just looking at how do we make solid contact with the driver, let's talk

13
00:00:45.240 --> 00:00:46.220
about this flat

14
00:00:46.220 --> 00:00:47.220
spot idea.

15
00:00:47.220 --> 00:00:51.940
So as a quick reminder, if we're analyzing our impact with the driver, we're

16
00:00:51.940 --> 00:00:52.480
going to

17
00:00:52.480 --> 00:00:57.390
have about 20 degrees of axis tilt, so your upper body is a little bit more

18
00:00:57.390 --> 00:00:58.120
behind the

19
00:00:58.120 --> 00:01:02.450
middle of your stance or more towards your right foot, as opposed to with an

20
00:01:02.450 --> 00:01:03.000
iron where

21
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:05.640
that axis tilt is significantly less.

22
00:01:05.640 --> 00:01:11.470
In fact, many golfers have that left shoulder in line with that left hip and

23
00:01:11.470 --> 00:01:12.640
left ankle,

24
00:01:12.640 --> 00:01:15.600
depending on the length of the club, especially with the shorter clubs.

25
00:01:15.600 --> 00:01:18.850
You will see a little bit of tilt with, say, five, six iron things of that

26
00:01:18.850 --> 00:01:19.420
nature.

27
00:01:19.420 --> 00:01:24.060
So you might be wondering to yourself, why do I want to have this axis tilt?

28
00:01:24.060 --> 00:01:27.260
It relates to what we're trying to get the club to do.

29
00:01:27.260 --> 00:01:32.550
So here we have a few freeze frames of the video, and what we can see here is

30
00:01:32.550 --> 00:01:33.260
that the

31
00:01:33.260 --> 00:01:38.730
golf club is roughly at the height of the golf ball from about the left foot to

32
00:01:38.730 --> 00:01:39.060
the

33
00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:40.060
right foot.

34
00:01:40.060 --> 00:01:45.060
So if I had my golf ball here, here's what that flat spot means.

35
00:01:45.060 --> 00:01:51.360
If I was swinging my arms around my body in a circle, then the club would come

36
00:01:51.360 --> 00:01:51.980
down and

37
00:01:51.980 --> 00:01:55.380
kind of have a consistent arc more like this.

38
00:01:55.380 --> 00:01:59.140
That's closer to what we see with the irons, but with the driver, you will tend

39
00:01:59.140 --> 00:01:59.860
to see down

40
00:01:59.860 --> 00:02:04.740
at the bottom of the swing more of this flat pattern with a slight ascent kind

41
00:02:04.740 --> 00:02:05.300
of like

42
00:02:05.300 --> 00:02:06.300
this.

43
00:02:06.300 --> 00:02:10.340
So we've got the club traveling at a pretty consistent height.

44
00:02:10.340 --> 00:02:17.030
From down the line, it would be going pretty straight like so, or slightly from

45
00:02:17.030 --> 00:02:18.300
the inside.

46
00:02:18.300 --> 00:02:23.070
Clubface-wise, you don't want to see a lot of the clubface coming in the ball,

47
00:02:23.070 --> 00:02:23.700
and then

48
00:02:23.700 --> 00:02:27.060
a lot of the clubface disappearing.

49
00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:33.470
And from this face-on view, you don't want to see a lot of loft changes as well

50
00:02:33.470 --> 00:02:33.900
.

51
00:02:33.900 --> 00:02:39.420
The driver has more inertia to it, so it becomes more sensitive when it's

52
00:02:39.420 --> 00:02:40.300
moving really

53
00:02:40.300 --> 00:02:43.260
fast, so it's hard to line everything up.

54
00:02:43.260 --> 00:02:46.980
The example I always use is if you had a really heavy tennis racket, you wouldn

55
00:02:46.980 --> 00:02:47.380
't be able

56
00:02:47.380 --> 00:02:50.580
to just flick your wrist, you would have to get it going in the direction that

57
00:02:50.580 --> 00:02:51.140
you wanted

58
00:02:51.140 --> 00:02:53.900
at the angle, you wanted much earlier.

59
00:02:53.900 --> 00:02:57.650
The driver is more like a heavy tennis racket where the short irons is more

60
00:02:57.650 --> 00:02:58.340
like a light

61
00:02:58.340 --> 00:03:01.580
tennis racket where you can kind of flip it, close last second.

62
00:03:01.580 --> 00:03:07.500
So the more consistent guys tend to have more of this flat bottom of the swing.

63
00:03:07.500 --> 00:03:12.400
By getting your body more tilted behind like so, then when you extend your arms

64
00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:13.060
, that will

65
00:03:13.060 --> 00:03:19.340
get the clubhead to travel more parallel to the ground instead of down at it.

66
00:03:19.340 --> 00:03:22.680
But the first thing I want you to look at is if you're analyzing your driver

67
00:03:22.680 --> 00:03:23.180
video,

68
00:03:23.180 --> 00:03:26.650
take a look at the height of the golf club and the angle of the clubface from

69
00:03:26.650 --> 00:03:27.340
about right

70
00:03:27.340 --> 00:03:32.660
foot to left foot to see if it fits this pattern.

71
00:03:32.660 --> 00:03:34.460
Here's another example of Rory.

72
00:03:34.460 --> 00:03:40.620
Again, you'll see right foot to left foot pretty close to that pattern.

73
00:03:40.620 --> 00:03:45.580
Here's John Rahm, some different looking elements to match up.

74
00:03:45.580 --> 00:03:51.460
But again, you'll see pretty close to the same height or a relatively flat

75
00:03:51.460 --> 00:03:52.420
bottom of

76
00:03:52.420 --> 00:03:58.360
the swing compared to what we'll see with some of the poorer driver's golf club

77
00:03:58.360 --> 00:03:58.660
or what

78
00:03:58.660 --> 00:04:03.820
you might see with your own swing analysis.

79
00:04:03.820 --> 00:04:10.490
So again, in Van Dam, height at about the same height as the golf ball, all the

80
00:04:10.490 --> 00:04:11.900
way through.

81
00:04:11.900 --> 00:04:15.480
When you're doing your studies and kind of analyzing videos, this is where I

82
00:04:15.480 --> 00:04:15.980
want you

83
00:04:15.980 --> 00:04:18.260
to start with your driver analysis.

84
00:04:18.260 --> 00:04:21.060
Okay, so now here's Luke Donald.

85
00:04:21.060 --> 00:04:25.390
We can see that compared to height of the golf ball, the club is a little bit

86
00:04:25.390 --> 00:04:25.540
higher

87
00:04:25.540 --> 00:04:29.220
and then it comes down and it starts coming back up very quickly.

88
00:04:29.220 --> 00:04:33.860
If you look at this on video and you kind of slow it down, it has more of a

89
00:04:33.860 --> 00:04:34.580
look like

90
00:04:34.580 --> 00:04:38.480
this where it never really flattens out compared to someone like Rory where it

91
00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:38.980
kind of has

92
00:04:38.980 --> 00:04:44.380
a look like that where there's more of this flat part of the swing.

93
00:04:44.380 --> 00:04:47.100
Luke Donald is a little bit more armsy.

94
00:04:47.100 --> 00:04:51.040
You can see in this shot, he tends to have a little bit more stand up so he

95
00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:52.300
doesn't create

96
00:04:52.300 --> 00:04:57.340
quite as good of the impact alignments from the down the line as well.

97
00:04:57.340 --> 00:05:01.060
And that creates more of this change down at the bottom.

98
00:05:01.060 --> 00:05:05.620
Historically, he's a really good wedge player, but he hasn't been one of the

99
00:05:05.620 --> 00:05:06.540
elite drivers

100
00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:07.540
of the golf ball.

101
00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:09.540
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why.

102
00:05:09.540 --> 00:05:14.830
So here we have another good example, Tommy Fleetwood, where the club travels

103
00:05:14.830 --> 00:05:15.500
relatively

104
00:05:15.500 --> 00:05:16.500
flat.

105
00:05:16.500 --> 00:05:19.960
He hit that a little on the toe if you slow down the video and so you'll see it

106
00:05:19.960 --> 00:05:20.420
spins

107
00:05:20.420 --> 00:05:22.420
a little bit more open.

108
00:05:22.420 --> 00:05:28.160
But lots of tilt, you'll notice that the arms structure tends to stay more

109
00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:29.260
similar from

110
00:05:29.260 --> 00:05:32.980
there to there as opposed to having a lot of straightening like we might see

111
00:05:32.980 --> 00:05:33.380
with an

112
00:05:33.380 --> 00:05:35.220
iron.

113
00:05:35.220 --> 00:05:37.380
That's part of what creates this flat spot.

114
00:05:37.380 --> 00:05:41.040
So from the down the line, if we know that we want the club to have this flat

115
00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:41.620
spot, it

116
00:05:41.620 --> 00:05:46.340
would make more sense that we'd want to kind of stay more in our posture.

117
00:05:46.340 --> 00:05:50.670
In general, with the iron guys who have more of this flat spot tend to be a

118
00:05:50.670 --> 00:05:51.500
little bit closer

119
00:05:51.500 --> 00:05:55.590
to the ground with their chest than where they started, where people have more

120
00:05:55.590 --> 00:05:55.980
of the

121
00:05:55.980 --> 00:06:00.310
Luke Donald style or the high to low will tend to have a little bit taller

122
00:06:00.310 --> 00:06:01.180
chest position

123
00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:03.380
compared to where they set up.

124
00:06:03.380 --> 00:06:08.440
Also what you'll see on video is oftentimes the club will be a little bit more

125
00:06:08.440 --> 00:06:09.020
inside

126
00:06:09.020 --> 00:06:10.540
the hands.

127
00:06:10.540 --> 00:06:16.500
That gets the swing direction a little bit more out to the right.

128
00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:20.830
In the slice and hook videos, we talk about those two positions being good

129
00:06:20.830 --> 00:06:21.460
checkpoints

130
00:06:21.460 --> 00:06:25.890
for looking at your path, but they depend a lot on the camera setup and the

131
00:06:25.890 --> 00:06:27.540
camera angle.

132
00:06:27.540 --> 00:06:31.580
But in general, having the club a little bit more inside the hands to a little

133
00:06:31.580 --> 00:06:32.180
bit more

134
00:06:32.180 --> 00:06:36.800
outside there will be a little bit more shallow or sweeping or hitting slightly

135
00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:37.340
up on the

136
00:06:37.340 --> 00:06:38.340
ball.

137
00:06:38.340 --> 00:06:44.680
So this gives you just a quick place to start when you're analyzing your driver

138
00:06:44.680 --> 00:06:45.580
video.

139
00:06:45.580 --> 00:06:48.890
If you're struggling with getting into a good delivery position where you have

140
00:06:48.890 --> 00:06:50.060
enough tilt

141
00:06:50.060 --> 00:06:56.260
or maintaining your posture, then we can expand on what's going on in the back

142
00:06:56.260 --> 00:06:57.220
swing or in

143
00:06:57.220 --> 00:06:58.460
transition.

144
00:06:58.460 --> 00:07:02.500
But whenever you're starting to analyze your driver's swing, start from this

145
00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:03.380
impact position

146
00:07:03.380 --> 00:07:05.580
and then work your way backward.

147
00:07:05.580 --> 00:07:10.160
If the club is too high at that right foot position, then I want you to

148
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:11.340
investigate,

149
00:07:11.340 --> 00:07:16.900
am I too far forward, have I had more of a forward lunge, am I too high, have I

150
00:07:16.900 --> 00:07:17.260
had

151
00:07:17.260 --> 00:07:23.230
more of a stand up, or my arms straightening, which usually goes hand in hand

152
00:07:23.230 --> 00:07:24.180
with that.

153
00:07:24.180 --> 00:07:31.350
Or if the club is coming up a lot on the way through, then perhaps am I too far

154
00:07:31.350 --> 00:07:32.140
behind

155
00:07:32.140 --> 00:07:38.340
or have I early extended and my chest is behind the ball, causing the club to

156
00:07:38.340 --> 00:07:39.220
have to swing

157
00:07:39.220 --> 00:07:40.220
up.

158
00:07:40.220 --> 00:07:44.100
I have too much arm action and not enough body turn.

159
00:07:44.100 --> 00:07:46.660
Those will influence the general shape.

160
00:07:46.660 --> 00:07:51.950
If the club faces in a wide open position coming into this point, or if it's

161
00:07:51.950 --> 00:07:52.380
really

162
00:07:52.380 --> 00:07:57.670
closed, then it would investigate what's happening earlier, either looking at

163
00:07:57.670 --> 00:07:58.180
my grip

164
00:07:58.180 --> 00:08:01.660
and my setup or looking at the top of the swing.

165
00:08:01.660 --> 00:08:05.260
But what you'll see is if I'm struggling with my driver performance, take a

166
00:08:05.260 --> 00:08:05.740
look at

167
00:08:05.740 --> 00:08:06.740
your flat spot.

168
00:08:06.740 --> 00:08:09.990
If you're struggling with your flat spot, then investigate deeper to figure out

169
00:08:09.990 --> 00:08:10.540
which big

170
00:08:10.540 --> 00:08:15.780
movements are causing you to not get the club flat at the bottom of the swing.

171
00:08:15.780 --> 00:08:21.450
By following that recipe, you'll probably have your best chance at being able

172
00:08:21.450 --> 00:08:22.060
to find

173
00:08:22.060 --> 00:08:28.900
your big ha moment or finding a new driver key as quickly as possible.
