Putting has a big impact on your confidence and ability to keep momentum going during a round.

When tracking putting, you can either look at total putts, or use some specific benchmarks based on certain distances.

Total Putts

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.960
All right, golfers, last of the four core scoring skills, we've got putting.

2
00:00:08.960 --> 00:00:14.880
So we looked at driver play, 28% of your score, iron play, 40% of your score,

3
00:00:14.880 --> 00:00:16.160
wedge play,

4
00:00:16.160 --> 00:00:17.160
17%.

5
00:00:17.160 --> 00:00:22.930
While putting is only 15%, it is a very important score, and especially if you

6
00:00:22.930 --> 00:00:24.120
are really bad

7
00:00:24.120 --> 00:00:25.120
at it.

8
00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:28.360
So how do we figure out if we're really bad at it?

9
00:00:28.360 --> 00:00:31.990
The easy stats is looking at total number of putts, so a pro is going to be

10
00:00:31.990 --> 00:00:32.600
somewhere

11
00:00:32.600 --> 00:00:38.120
around 31, 32 putts where a high handicap golfer is going to be somewhere

12
00:00:38.120 --> 00:00:39.120
around 38

13
00:00:39.120 --> 00:00:40.120
putts.

14
00:00:40.120 --> 00:00:45.600
Remember, there's 18 holes, so 36 putts would be averaging two putts per hole.

15
00:00:45.600 --> 00:00:49.720
But this doesn't really tell me if I had a good putting day or bad putting day.

16
00:00:49.720 --> 00:00:55.560
It's better to compare the putts that I made compared to the distance that I

17
00:00:55.560 --> 00:00:56.760
had, because

18
00:00:56.760 --> 00:01:01.740
what we'll see is different distance spots have a much higher or lower

19
00:01:01.740 --> 00:01:02.840
percentage of

20
00:01:02.840 --> 00:01:04.400
make.

21
00:01:04.400 --> 00:01:08.000
So here I've got from three feet, four feet, all the way to 10 feet.

22
00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:15.410
You'll see each foot inside of 10 feet gets you almost 10% closer or 10% better

23
00:01:15.410 --> 00:01:17.480
make percentage.

24
00:01:17.480 --> 00:01:21.760
And I should point out, I use the pro stats for everybody with putting.

25
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:26.960
I don't think it takes the same level of athleticism as even wedge play.

26
00:01:26.960 --> 00:01:30.600
So I find that you can use the pro putting stats.

27
00:01:30.600 --> 00:01:37.300
And I've had many even higher handicap golfers get close to these numbers.

28
00:01:37.300 --> 00:01:42.080
So but anyway, inside 10 feet, you'll start to see really inside 8 feet, it's

29
00:01:42.080 --> 00:01:43.920
about 10%

30
00:01:43.920 --> 00:01:46.680
improvement for each foot you get it closer.

31
00:01:46.680 --> 00:01:51.030
That tells you how important it is to hit those irons well as well as your wed

32
00:01:51.030 --> 00:01:51.720
ges well.

33
00:01:51.720 --> 00:01:56.600
Because for every foot you get closer, your chance of making it goes up a lot.

34
00:01:56.600 --> 00:02:01.180
Once we get to 10, I usually break it into 5 foot and once we get to 20, I'll

35
00:02:01.180 --> 00:02:01.800
jump more

36
00:02:01.800 --> 00:02:03.520
by 10s.

37
00:02:03.520 --> 00:02:07.440
One of the other numbers that I give my students is 30 feet is basically the

38
00:02:07.440 --> 00:02:08.360
break even point

39
00:02:08.360 --> 00:02:10.640
where most pros average 2 putts.

40
00:02:10.640 --> 00:02:17.370
So one simple thing is for a lot of beginner golfers, higher handicap golfers,

41
00:02:17.370 --> 00:02:18.160
minimize

42
00:02:18.160 --> 00:02:21.200
your 3 putts inside of 30 feet.

43
00:02:21.200 --> 00:02:26.100
If you can get it to where inside 30 feet, it's always a 2 putt, that'll help

44
00:02:26.100 --> 00:02:26.560
you get

45
00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:30.160
into this zone much quicker.

46
00:02:30.160 --> 00:02:32.920
3 putts add up very quickly.

47
00:02:32.920 --> 00:02:37.500
But then again, when we were talking about in order to make buries or this

48
00:02:37.500 --> 00:02:38.280
proximity

49
00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:43.290
goal, you'll see from 20 feet, which was about what pros were averaging from

50
00:02:43.290 --> 00:02:44.240
125.

51
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:48.680
So hitting a wedge shot from there, averaging 50% of the shots to 20 feet, they

52
00:02:48.680 --> 00:02:49.160
're only

53
00:02:49.160 --> 00:02:52.080
going to make about 15% of them.

54
00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:56.840
So if you only had 1 or 2 putts from 20 feet, it's unlikely you're going to

55
00:02:56.840 --> 00:02:57.560
make one of

56
00:02:57.560 --> 00:02:58.560
those.

57
00:02:58.560 --> 00:03:04.240
Pros have to have, whether it's 8 to 10, a significant number of shots from 20

58
00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:04.640
feet

59
00:03:04.640 --> 00:03:08.920
that they can hit enough inside the 8 foot zone to give yourself a real chance

60
00:03:08.920 --> 00:03:09.520
at birdie

61
00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:14.810
or at least inside 20 feet to give yourself a significant chance or a good putt

62
00:03:14.810 --> 00:03:15.160
.

63
00:03:15.160 --> 00:03:20.500
So this is a good way for doing this periodically of looking at how far did I

64
00:03:20.500 --> 00:03:21.600
have for each

65
00:03:21.600 --> 00:03:27.760
of my putts and then comparing them just to see where we stack up to these

66
00:03:27.760 --> 00:03:29.200
benchmarks.

67
00:03:29.200 --> 00:03:32.120
Technique wise, there are 3 big putting skills.

68
00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:35.400
You've got green reading, start line and speed control.

69
00:03:35.400 --> 00:03:39.670
When it comes to the long putts and avoiding 3 putts, you've got to be able to

70
00:03:39.670 --> 00:03:40.200
read the

71
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:44.060
green, control your speed and start line is a little less important but it's

72
00:03:44.060 --> 00:03:45.040
still there.

73
00:03:45.040 --> 00:03:48.120
When it comes to short putts, you've got to be able to hit your start line.

74
00:03:48.120 --> 00:03:50.120
That's one of the most important skill.

75
00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:53.960
Reading the green helps but these putts aren't going to have too much break to

76
00:03:53.960 --> 00:03:54.440
them.

77
00:03:54.440 --> 00:03:59.250
So if you have a little bit more margin of error there and speed control is the

78
00:03:59.250 --> 00:03:59.720
least

79
00:03:59.720 --> 00:04:04.080
important but still an important factor for short putts.

80
00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:06.910
So these are the 3 big skills that we're always working on when we're trying to

81
00:04:06.910 --> 00:04:07.280
refine

82
00:04:07.280 --> 00:04:10.800
our putting.

83
00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:13.820
With green reading, you're either working on reading the green more with your

84
00:04:13.820 --> 00:04:14.240
feet or

85
00:04:14.240 --> 00:04:16.600
with your eyes.

86
00:04:16.600 --> 00:04:21.080
With speed control, so avoiding 3 putts, there's a few skills.

87
00:04:21.080 --> 00:04:26.570
The big ones are being able to use the same tempo every single time and to be

88
00:04:26.570 --> 00:04:27.120
able to

89
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:30.200
comfortably make different lengths of swings.

90
00:04:30.200 --> 00:04:33.740
If you have the same tempo and different lengths of swings, you start to

91
00:04:33.740 --> 00:04:34.880
control the distance

92
00:04:34.880 --> 00:04:36.320
much more repeatedly.

93
00:04:36.320 --> 00:04:40.500
Assuming you get good solid contact and loft control but these 2 are usually

94
00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:41.440
the less critical

95
00:04:41.440 --> 00:04:42.440
ones.

96
00:04:42.440 --> 00:04:46.960
When you struggle with speed control, it's usually one of both of these.

97
00:04:46.960 --> 00:04:51.700
When it comes to start line, that breaks down into the putter face control and

98
00:04:51.700 --> 00:04:52.280
the putter

99
00:04:52.280 --> 00:04:53.680
path control.

100
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:59.600
The putter face control is a much higher priority than the path control.

101
00:04:59.600 --> 00:05:07.030
The majority of the start line comes from the face control and the path becomes

102
00:05:07.030 --> 00:05:07.800
an issue

103
00:05:07.800 --> 00:05:12.880
if it influences your ability to predictably control the face.

104
00:05:12.880 --> 00:05:15.620
If you're struggling with more of your start line, which is more of the short

105
00:05:15.620 --> 00:05:16.200
putts, we're

106
00:05:16.200 --> 00:05:20.320
going to do a lot more geometry based or face and path drills.

107
00:05:20.320 --> 00:05:24.860
For serving more with the lag putts, we're going to do more of these tempo and

108
00:05:24.860 --> 00:05:25.360
length

109
00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:27.080
of swing drills.

110
00:05:27.080 --> 00:05:33.290
This will help give you some good benchmarks, 8 feet and in, better than 50%, 3

111
00:05:33.290 --> 00:05:34.000
feet and

112
00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:39.160
in, we should make almost all of them and avoid 3 putts from 30 feet and in.

113
00:05:39.160 --> 00:05:43.720
To do that, you've got to start the ball online, control your pacing and read

114
00:05:43.720 --> 00:05:44.760
the green.

115
00:05:44.760 --> 00:05:48.970
You do that, you're one step closer to mastering while the least important

116
00:05:48.970 --> 00:05:49.920
skill of really

117
00:05:49.920 --> 00:05:54.800
rewarding in one of the core for scoring skills to being a great golfer.
