The most important skill for scoring well is your approach shot game

Excel Spreadsheet for tracking your proximity.

Since iron play is the most important factor in scoring well, I want you to have clear benchmarks for tracking your progress. This can either be greens in regulation (GIR's), or this can be proximity percentage. The proximity percentage is much more useful once you get to shooting in the 80's and below.

GIR Goals

  • Tour Pro - 12
  • 80 golfer - 7
  • 90 golfer - 4
  • 100 golfer - 2

Proximity goals

  • Tour Pro - <6%
  • 80 golfer - 9-10%
  • 90 golfer - 12-14%
  • 100 golfer - 14-18%

A less complicated way of looking at your proximity goals is by comparing a few known benchmarks. Tour averages from a few distances can help:

Tour distance leave

  • 100 yards - 16 feet
  • 125 yards - 21 feet
  • 150 yards - 31 feet

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.680
All right golfers, in this benchmark video, we're going to look at your

2
00:00:07.680 --> 00:00:08.660
approach shots

3
00:00:08.660 --> 00:00:10.660
or iron play.

4
00:00:10.660 --> 00:00:14.960
Now iron play or approach shots accounts for 40% of the scoring distance, the

5
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:15.540
difference

6
00:00:15.540 --> 00:00:17.480
between two different skill levels.

7
00:00:17.480 --> 00:00:22.440
So this is probably the most important skill if you want to become the best gol

8
00:00:22.440 --> 00:00:24.460
fer you can.

9
00:00:24.460 --> 00:00:29.060
So we're going to break it down into a couple of different categories.

10
00:00:29.060 --> 00:00:31.900
Let's start with the greens and regulation.

11
00:00:31.900 --> 00:00:35.220
So greens and regulation is a great simple stat.

12
00:00:35.220 --> 00:00:38.300
It's easy to just put a check mark in your scorecard like did I hit the green

13
00:00:38.300 --> 00:00:38.660
or did

14
00:00:38.660 --> 00:00:40.460
I not hit the green.

15
00:00:40.460 --> 00:00:46.280
But again it's a little bit limited because of the size of the greens and where

16
00:00:46.280 --> 00:00:47.260
I'm aiming.

17
00:00:47.260 --> 00:00:52.540
So what if I hit a bunch of bad shots but they still hit the green.

18
00:00:52.540 --> 00:00:56.120
So let's break it down, we'll look at the green and regulation but then we'll

19
00:00:56.120 --> 00:00:56.500
break

20
00:00:56.500 --> 00:00:58.660
it down into something I like even better.

21
00:00:58.660 --> 00:01:03.010
So green and regulation goals, these are kind of compiled from a few different

22
00:01:03.010 --> 00:01:03.540
sources

23
00:01:03.540 --> 00:01:10.190
but so whether it's off by one or so doesn't really matter these just give you

24
00:01:10.190 --> 00:01:11.500
a rough benchmark

25
00:01:11.500 --> 00:01:12.500
to go at.

26
00:01:12.500 --> 00:01:16.800
You'll see that in general the better you get the more greens regulation you'll

27
00:01:16.800 --> 00:01:17.180
hit.

28
00:01:17.180 --> 00:01:21.470
And we also look at green and regulation plus one so basically are you giving

29
00:01:21.470 --> 00:01:21.780
yourself a

30
00:01:21.780 --> 00:01:27.780
par putt pros do that on every single hole they hit greens about 12 per round

31
00:01:27.780 --> 00:01:28.500
but they

32
00:01:28.500 --> 00:01:35.870
have more than 17 putts at par to shoot 80 you've got to hit a little less than

33
00:01:35.870 --> 00:01:36.380
half

34
00:01:36.380 --> 00:01:40.260
the greens but have a par putt on almost all of them.

35
00:01:40.260 --> 00:01:47.280
So only about three greens can you have a bogey putt as your first putt and

36
00:01:47.280 --> 00:01:48.100
then getting

37
00:01:48.100 --> 00:01:53.980
down into the 90s golf you've got to hit 12 so you can miss about a third and

38
00:01:53.980 --> 00:01:54.540
then when

39
00:01:54.540 --> 00:02:02.580
we get to 100 off you can have nine putt at par see about half the holes.

40
00:02:02.580 --> 00:02:06.880
So what you start to see is you can't have too many terrible holes and still

41
00:02:06.880 --> 00:02:07.740
score well.

42
00:02:07.740 --> 00:02:11.120
If you're at a beginner where you're having one bad shot per round that's

43
00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:11.940
really killing

44
00:02:11.940 --> 00:02:16.500
your score I recommend don't even keep score and go more off of quality shots

45
00:02:16.500 --> 00:02:17.180
until you

46
00:02:17.180 --> 00:02:22.500
get to about where you can play a few holes without having a terrible shot but

47
00:02:22.500 --> 00:02:22.980
because

48
00:02:22.980 --> 00:02:26.340
you're not going to hit too many greens at the higher level but you should be

49
00:02:26.340 --> 00:02:26.700
able to

50
00:02:26.700 --> 00:02:30.060
get putt at par that's what we're going after.

51
00:02:30.060 --> 00:02:34.360
Now we can break down the greens and regulation a little bit further to between

52
00:02:34.360 --> 00:02:35.140
100 yards

53
00:02:35.140 --> 00:02:38.700
and 150 or 150 to 200 yards.

54
00:02:38.700 --> 00:02:43.000
What you'll see is pros are a little bit more consistent at both those levels

55
00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:43.460
and as you

56
00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:47.940
get further to amateurs there's a bigger difference.

57
00:02:47.940 --> 00:02:53.920
So I tell most of my students you want to get really good at the 100 to 150

58
00:02:53.920 --> 00:02:54.700
yard zone

59
00:02:54.700 --> 00:02:59.000
and if you're a higher handicap golfer you're really patient with yourself in

60
00:02:59.000 --> 00:02:59.860
more than 200

61
00:02:59.860 --> 00:03:00.860
yard zone.

62
00:03:00.860 --> 00:03:06.350
We'll talk about this in a later slide in this presentation but if you're

63
00:03:06.350 --> 00:03:07.220
hitting a

64
00:03:07.220 --> 00:03:12.540
lot of fairway woods and hybrids into your greens it's hard to consistently hit

65
00:03:12.540 --> 00:03:13.020
enough

66
00:03:13.020 --> 00:03:15.820
greens or regulation to really score well from there.

67
00:03:15.820 --> 00:03:19.180
Okay now this is looking at proximity goals.

68
00:03:19.180 --> 00:03:22.620
So proximity goals is a little bit better indicator.

69
00:03:22.620 --> 00:03:25.110
That's similar to what we were doing with the driver which is basically if I

70
00:03:25.110 --> 00:03:26.220
pick a target

71
00:03:26.220 --> 00:03:28.900
how far offline am I hitting it.

72
00:03:28.900 --> 00:03:34.780
So pros are going to be a little less than 6% on average.

73
00:03:34.780 --> 00:03:41.980
So 5.5% from 100 to 150 yards 5.9% from 150 to 200.

74
00:03:41.980 --> 00:03:46.490
The way that works out is basically from 100 yard shot they'll have 50% of

75
00:03:46.490 --> 00:03:47.220
their shots

76
00:03:47.220 --> 00:03:55.870
finish inside 16 feet from 125, 50% inside 21 and from 150 yards it's inside 31

77
00:03:55.870 --> 00:03:56.620
feet.

78
00:03:56.620 --> 00:04:02.530
Now what we'll see when we get to the putting zone class is that it's hard to

79
00:04:02.530 --> 00:04:03.460
make a lot

80
00:04:03.460 --> 00:04:05.340
of putts from 31 feet.

81
00:04:05.340 --> 00:04:09.360
So in order to make enough birdies you have to have less than 150 yards you

82
00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:10.260
know somewhere

83
00:04:10.260 --> 00:04:15.140
in this 125, 100 yard zone enough times that you can hit them close enough to

84
00:04:15.140 --> 00:04:15.780
make some

85
00:04:15.780 --> 00:04:18.100
easy birdies.

86
00:04:18.100 --> 00:04:24.580
And what we'll see is even when we go to the 80s level a 27 foot foot putt it

87
00:04:24.580 --> 00:04:25.380
has a very

88
00:04:25.380 --> 00:04:26.860
little make percentage.

89
00:04:26.860 --> 00:04:31.260
So even at 100 yards you're not going to make a ton of birdies.

90
00:04:31.260 --> 00:04:35.940
So most of the ways you're going to lower your scores will be consistently

91
00:04:35.940 --> 00:04:36.780
making pars

92
00:04:36.780 --> 00:04:40.860
rather than having a lot more you know having four or five birdies.

93
00:04:40.860 --> 00:04:45.300
You don't get anywhere near that category until you get down to pro level.

94
00:04:45.300 --> 00:04:54.800
So at 80s golf we're going to have 27 feet and at 100 golf we've got 45 feet as

95
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:55.700
our expected

96
00:04:55.700 --> 00:04:58.940
distance or 50% of our shots from 100 yards.

97
00:04:58.940 --> 00:05:08.660
Now that's 15 yards, many greens are 15 yards wide and maybe or in 20, 30 yards

98
00:05:08.660 --> 00:05:09.660
deep like

99
00:05:09.660 --> 00:05:15.890
when we start getting in this category even as we get down to about here

100
00:05:15.890 --> 00:05:17.340
because of the

101
00:05:17.340 --> 00:05:20.710
size of the greens and because of our expected miss it makes a whole lot more

102
00:05:20.710 --> 00:05:21.260
sense that

103
00:05:21.260 --> 00:05:24.820
we just aim at the middle of the green and forget about the pin.

104
00:05:24.820 --> 00:05:28.120
It's not until you get down into this zone that you want to start thinking

105
00:05:28.120 --> 00:05:28.820
about aiming

106
00:05:28.820 --> 00:05:35.470
at pins and we'll talk more about that as we talk in strategy because we'll see

107
00:05:35.470 --> 00:05:36.060
again

108
00:05:36.060 --> 00:05:44.370
15% to 18% we're about three times less accurate than the pros when we're at a

109
00:05:44.370 --> 00:05:45.180
golfer

110
00:05:45.180 --> 00:05:46.300
that shoots about 100.

111
00:05:46.300 --> 00:05:50.380
So we have to account for that and give our self more margin for air.

112
00:05:50.380 --> 00:05:54.680
The simple way to keep track of this is you're going to keep track of two

113
00:05:54.680 --> 00:05:55.780
numbers which is

114
00:05:55.780 --> 00:06:00.040
how far did I have in for my approach shot, let's say I had 150 yards and then

115
00:06:00.040 --> 00:06:00.300
how many

116
00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:03.620
feet did I have for my first putt.

117
00:06:03.620 --> 00:06:08.400
That will give you your not for your first spot, your next shot because if you

118
00:06:08.400 --> 00:06:08.940
missed

119
00:06:08.940 --> 00:06:12.840
the green let's say you missed it by 30 yards you put it in a bunker you would

120
00:06:12.840 --> 00:06:13.460
write down

121
00:06:13.460 --> 00:06:15.860
90 feet for that shot.

122
00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:18.780
But that gives you something that looks kind of like this.

123
00:06:18.780 --> 00:06:25.360
This is a golfer stats where it's a little color coded so that if he's under 6%

124
00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:25.740
it'll

125
00:06:25.740 --> 00:06:31.100
show up in green if it's more in that 6 to 10% range single digit handicap it

126
00:06:31.100 --> 00:06:31.740
'll be more

127
00:06:31.740 --> 00:06:36.820
this yellow and then if it's above 10% it'll be red.

128
00:06:36.820 --> 00:06:45.530
So for the day hit just under 10% this was I believe a 79 round so it kind of

129
00:06:45.530 --> 00:06:46.500
looks something

130
00:06:46.500 --> 00:06:47.500
like that.

131
00:06:47.500 --> 00:06:49.880
You don't have to go to that detail if you don't want to but this is a great

132
00:06:49.880 --> 00:06:50.980
way to track

133
00:06:50.980 --> 00:06:55.950
how well you're improving your iron play and as we said that's the most

134
00:06:55.950 --> 00:06:57.180
important stat

135
00:06:57.180 --> 00:06:58.620
when it comes to scoring.

136
00:06:58.620 --> 00:07:03.230
Okay, now I want to try to put some of this in perspective before we dig into

137
00:07:03.230 --> 00:07:04.300
the technique.

138
00:07:04.300 --> 00:07:08.070
So we're going to look at these are all tour pro numbers and we're going to

139
00:07:08.070 --> 00:07:08.780
talk about

140
00:07:08.780 --> 00:07:10.740
practice versus on the course.

141
00:07:10.740 --> 00:07:16.060
So at 150 yards I've got a few numbers up there for you but at 150 yards pros

142
00:07:16.060 --> 00:07:16.580
hit about

143
00:07:16.580 --> 00:07:22.980
76% of the greens and regulation from the fairway.

144
00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:26.860
Now we're going to look at this chase from the ace to compare that.

145
00:07:26.860 --> 00:07:31.720
So from the fairway they hit it to about 25 feet from the rough 54 feet that

146
00:07:31.720 --> 00:07:32.360
gives you

147
00:07:32.360 --> 00:07:36.380
that average of about 31 feet.

148
00:07:36.380 --> 00:07:40.940
Now here's a number that I throw out there for a lot of my students which is

149
00:07:40.940 --> 00:07:41.580
based on

150
00:07:41.580 --> 00:07:42.580
strokes gain.

151
00:07:42.580 --> 00:07:46.020
So strokes gained is kind of the gold standard and where a lot of this data

152
00:07:46.020 --> 00:07:46.860
comes from but

153
00:07:46.860 --> 00:07:51.470
strokes gained is the gold standard at looking at if we had every golfer on

154
00:07:51.470 --> 00:07:52.380
tour hit from

155
00:07:52.380 --> 00:07:55.620
this spot what would be the average and did you do better or worse than that?

156
00:07:55.620 --> 00:07:59.780
If you did better you gain a stroke if you do worse then you lose a stroke.

157
00:07:59.780 --> 00:08:05.490
The place where they average three which would be kind of par for an iron shot

158
00:08:05.490 --> 00:08:07.580
is 168 yards.

159
00:08:07.580 --> 00:08:10.500
For most of the pros that's going to be somewhere around an eight iron.

160
00:08:10.500 --> 00:08:15.490
So basically if they played a course where they had 168 yards into every second

161
00:08:15.490 --> 00:08:15.860
shot

162
00:08:15.860 --> 00:08:21.300
you would expect them to shoot right around par over the course of a season.

163
00:08:21.300 --> 00:08:27.640
So what I tell my students is if you have a lot of hybrids into the greens or

164
00:08:27.640 --> 00:08:28.500
fairway

165
00:08:28.500 --> 00:08:32.800
woods into the greens if you don't have a lot of clubs shorter than eight iron

166
00:08:32.800 --> 00:08:33.400
you shouldn't

167
00:08:33.400 --> 00:08:37.770
be expecting to make more pars unless you're doing really good with your ch

168
00:08:37.770 --> 00:08:40.140
ipping and pitching.

169
00:08:40.140 --> 00:08:44.170
Because even the pros are going to have a hard time averaging under par hitting

170
00:08:44.170 --> 00:08:44.420
the

171
00:08:44.420 --> 00:08:46.100
longer clubs.

172
00:08:46.100 --> 00:08:49.640
Now I mentioned this chase from the ace and it was an interesting little

173
00:08:49.640 --> 00:08:50.380
exercise where

174
00:08:50.380 --> 00:08:55.140
they had Justin Thomas and Roy McElroy at a European tour event.

175
00:08:55.140 --> 00:08:57.260
They went to a par three.

176
00:08:57.260 --> 00:09:03.780
The par three was pretty open I'll show it on the next slide but from a par

177
00:09:03.780 --> 00:09:04.620
three pretty

178
00:09:04.620 --> 00:09:13.000
flat 150 yards good conditions they still only hit on average about 94% of the

179
00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:13.460
green.

180
00:09:13.460 --> 00:09:18.080
So they still missed the green in fact Justin Thomas missed the green 8% of the

181
00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:18.620
time.

182
00:09:18.620 --> 00:09:23.160
So I have a lot of students who think they should never miss the green from 150

183
00:09:23.160 --> 00:09:23.580
yards

184
00:09:23.580 --> 00:09:30.510
off a tee on a nice par three they were still missing the green over 5% of the

185
00:09:30.510 --> 00:09:31.340
time.

186
00:09:31.340 --> 00:09:34.360
From this perfect kind of blocked scenario where they were just hitting shot

187
00:09:34.360 --> 00:09:34.740
the same

188
00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:40.140
shot over and over again they did average about 11 feet.

189
00:09:40.140 --> 00:09:47.310
So if I put this up here so that you can keep in perspective whatever you do on

190
00:09:47.310 --> 00:09:48.100
the range

191
00:09:48.100 --> 00:09:51.630
whatever you do in practice is typically going to be a lot better than what you

192
00:09:51.630 --> 00:09:52.180
do on the

193
00:09:52.180 --> 00:09:53.220
course.

194
00:09:53.220 --> 00:09:57.150
So on a flat par three they averaged 11 feet if you take all of what they do

195
00:09:57.150 --> 00:09:57.980
over the course

196
00:09:57.980 --> 00:10:03.900
of a year they averaged more than double that from the same spot in the fairway

197
00:10:03.900 --> 00:10:04.260
.

198
00:10:04.260 --> 00:10:09.580
So give yourself a little bit of patience and train with some harder windows to

199
00:10:09.580 --> 00:10:09.700
get

200
00:10:09.700 --> 00:10:15.650
you accustomed to basically having a little bit of a drop off when you get on

201
00:10:15.650 --> 00:10:16.580
the course

202
00:10:16.580 --> 00:10:20.700
but still playing and scoring really well.

203
00:10:20.700 --> 00:10:26.060
So again this is that hole where basically it was a pretty wide open green pin

204
00:10:26.060 --> 00:10:27.100
was somewhat

205
00:10:27.100 --> 00:10:34.140
up towards the middle and they still missed the green some of these like I said

206
00:10:34.140 --> 00:10:34.900
5% of

207
00:10:34.900 --> 00:10:35.900
the time.

208
00:10:35.900 --> 00:10:39.200
Now they did have a whole bunch of shots where they hit it really close neither

209
00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:39.820
of them actually

210
00:10:39.820 --> 00:10:44.620
made the ace which was the goal of the hundred shots but they had a bunch of

211
00:10:44.620 --> 00:10:45.540
shots really

212
00:10:45.540 --> 00:10:52.020
close but the average then the average was really good.

213
00:10:52.020 --> 00:10:56.320
Again what I would take away from this is when you do block practice you're

214
00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:56.660
going to

215
00:10:56.660 --> 00:11:02.110
be maybe twice or fifty or you're going to be a hundred percent better than you

216
00:11:02.110 --> 00:11:02.620
would

217
00:11:02.620 --> 00:11:06.300
in that same scenario on the right on the course.

218
00:11:06.300 --> 00:11:13.160
So don't expect perfection even if you are a very low single digit handicapper

219
00:11:13.160 --> 00:11:13.740
even the

220
00:11:13.740 --> 00:11:19.060
best miss it's all about being able to recover and get a good score with what

221
00:11:19.060 --> 00:11:20.060
you're doing

222
00:11:20.060 --> 00:11:24.100
with more of your average shots less than your perfect shots.

223
00:11:24.100 --> 00:11:28.600
Okay so benchmarks we're looking at either in greens a regulation or this

224
00:11:28.600 --> 00:11:30.740
proximity percentage.

225
00:11:30.740 --> 00:11:33.620
Now if you're struggling with it here's what we're going to think about

226
00:11:33.620 --> 00:11:35.300
technique wise.

227
00:11:35.300 --> 00:11:38.840
With most with most shots you're going to have a distribution so let's say I

228
00:11:38.840 --> 00:11:39.300
had you

229
00:11:39.300 --> 00:11:43.910
hit a hundred shots 50% of them would be left of a certain part 50% of them

230
00:11:43.910 --> 00:11:44.940
would be right

231
00:11:44.940 --> 00:11:49.230
of a certain ball typically the ones that are left would be long because of the

232
00:11:49.230 --> 00:11:49.580
clubface

233
00:11:49.580 --> 00:11:53.250
being closed typically the ones that would be right would be short because of

234
00:11:53.250 --> 00:11:53.900
the clubface

235
00:11:53.900 --> 00:11:55.540
being more open.

236
00:11:55.540 --> 00:12:03.600
If we start to impact the factors that really influence our distance control

237
00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:04.700
are going to

238
00:12:04.700 --> 00:12:09.500
be how fast we're swinging the club our contact location and our loft control

239
00:12:09.500 --> 00:12:10.260
or our shaft

240
00:12:10.260 --> 00:12:11.260
lean.

241
00:12:11.260 --> 00:12:14.410
So if you struggle a lot with this when you're looking at the video you want to

242
00:12:14.410 --> 00:12:15.660
check okay

243
00:12:15.660 --> 00:12:19.440
do I have negative shaft lean or positive shaft lean that'll help with solid

244
00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:20.140
contact.

245
00:12:20.140 --> 00:12:23.750
That's my sequencing look like that'll help with speed control and then again

246
00:12:23.750 --> 00:12:24.300
the shaft

247
00:12:24.300 --> 00:12:26.820
lean will help with my loft.

248
00:12:26.820 --> 00:12:32.140
If I'm struggling more left to right that's going to come more from the face

249
00:12:32.140 --> 00:12:32.740
path and

250
00:12:32.740 --> 00:12:37.080
contact location with your woods and hybrids but primarily we're going to be

251
00:12:37.080 --> 00:12:37.820
looking at

252
00:12:37.820 --> 00:12:42.230
what's the path what's the face and we can relate it to how does that relate to

253
00:12:42.230 --> 00:12:42.620
the low

254
00:12:42.620 --> 00:12:46.920
point but this gives you a quick little guide as far as if you're taking a

255
00:12:46.920 --> 00:12:47.860
mental snapshot

256
00:12:47.860 --> 00:12:52.160
of when you miss the green is it more direction or is it more distance or is a

257
00:12:52.160 --> 00:12:52.940
combination

258
00:12:52.940 --> 00:12:53.940
of both.

259
00:12:53.940 --> 00:12:59.440
This will help you with the starting point as far as where you want to start

260
00:12:59.440 --> 00:13:00.540
approaching

261
00:13:00.540 --> 00:13:05.530
looking at the video to diagnose your key issue and then you can obviously go

262
00:13:05.530 --> 00:13:06.140
through

263
00:13:06.140 --> 00:13:10.760
the drills to train your key issue and monitor if you're improving in that one

264
00:13:10.760 --> 00:13:11.420
specific

265
00:13:11.420 --> 00:13:12.420
category.

266
00:13:12.420 --> 00:13:15.900
I find that if you break it down into these two am I missing it short long

267
00:13:15.900 --> 00:13:16.540
because our

268
00:13:16.540 --> 00:13:21.100
contact and distance or left right because of direction it makes it a little

269
00:13:21.100 --> 00:13:21.700
bit more

270
00:13:21.700 --> 00:13:27.320
attainable so this is the most important skill but next we're going to dive

271
00:13:27.320 --> 00:13:27.900
into the

272
00:13:27.900 --> 00:13:32.200
short game where we're going to look at wedge play and how do we recover for

273
00:13:32.200 --> 00:13:32.900
those greens

274
00:13:32.900 --> 00:13:36.540
that we are inevitably going to miss every single round.
