If you fight a slice, struggle to get forward shaft lean, or feel like the clubface is always lagging open, this concept matters.

A common question is whether you should make this move at the top of the swing, during transition, or later in the release. The answer is that good players do all three patterns—but not equally. The most common version happens in transition, though some players build it in during the backswing and a smaller group create it much later. Understanding those patterns helps you stop chasing positions blindly and start matching the move to what your swing actually needs.

What the Motorcycle Movement Really Is

At its core, the motorcycle movement is a change in the relationship between your lead wrist, your lead forearm, and the clubface. When the lead wrist goes from a more extended or cupped position into a more flexed or bowed position, the clubface tends to rotate into a more closed orientation relative to the arc.

That does not automatically mean the face is “shut” in a destructive way. In many swings, it simply means the face is no longer hanging open. This is why the move is so often associated with better compression and a more body-driven release. If the face is organized earlier, you do not need as much last-second hand manipulation through impact.

The Most Common Pattern: Transition Motorcycle

The classic version of the motorcycle movement happens in transition—the short window between the top of the backswing and early downswing. This is the pattern many strong players use, and it is often the easiest one to identify on video.

Here is the typical sequence:

  1. The lead wrist has some extension during the takeaway and backswing.
  2. At the top, it may still be slightly cupped or close to flat.
  3. As pressure shifts and the downswing begins, the lead wrist starts flexing.
  4. By shaft parallel in the downswing, the wrist is significantly more flexed than it was in the backswing.

This timing makes a lot of sense biomechanically. As the body begins to unwind, the golfer is simultaneously organizing the face. That helps set up a delivery where the club can shallow, the body can rotate, and the face does not need a rescue at the bottom.

For many golfers, this is the most practical pattern to learn because it matches how the move naturally fits into the swing’s changing directions. Rather than trying to hold a bowed wrist all the way to the top, you let the backswing happen more naturally and then train the flexion as the downswing begins.

The Backswing Version: Earlier Clubface Organization

Some players create the motorcycle movement earlier, during the backswing. In this pattern, the lead wrist begins flexing as the club is being set, often between early takeaway and the top of the swing.

This pattern can be effective, and for some amateurs it feels simpler. Why? Because you are not trying to create a major wrist change during the fast-moving transition. You build the face condition earlier, then maintain it.

That said, earlier is not automatically better. Some golfers assume that if they bow the wrist in the backswing, they are making a more powerful move. That is not necessarily true. Plenty of long hitters do it this way, but so do players who are not especially long. The timing itself is not a power secret. It is simply one way of organizing the face.

The key question is whether the pattern helps you deliver the club more consistently. If it simplifies face control without wrecking your backswing structure, it can be a useful option.

The Rare Pattern: Release Motorcycle

The least common version happens late, during the release. These golfers may still appear somewhat cupped or extended in the delivery position, then rapidly flex the lead wrist through impact.

This pattern is harder to spot because the wrist is rotating at the same time the club is releasing. On camera, the player may not look especially bowed coming into the ball, but at impact and just after impact the lead wrist suddenly appears much flatter or more bowed.

That means the motorcycle movement is happening in a very short window.

This is not the ideal pattern for most golfers to copy on purpose. It requires excellent timing and a strong feel for the hands. But it is important to understand that it does exist. If you only look at one frame in transition, you might wrongly assume a player is not using lead wrist flexion at all, when in reality they are using it later and faster.

On 2D video, you are making educated guesses from positions. On 3D graphs, you can actually track the lead wrist through time. That makes the pattern much easier to understand.

Why does this matter? Because it reminds you not to judge a swing by one still frame. Two players can arrive at impact with similar wrist conditions but get there in completely different ways.

Why Slicers Usually Need More of This Move

If you battle a slice, there is a good chance your lead wrist is not flexing enough soon enough. A very common amateur pattern looks like this:

  1. You may flex the wrist a little early in the takeaway.
  2. Then you add a lot of extension as you set the club and reach the top.
  3. In transition, you try to start the downswing with your body.
  4. But the lead wrist only flexes a small amount—often not nearly enough to offset the cup you created.
  5. At impact, the wrist is still more extended than it was at address.

  1. Film your swing from down the line. Check the three key positions: shaft parallel going back, top of swing, and shaft parallel coming down.
  2. Compare your wrist condition at those checkpoints. If you are more cupped coming down than you expected, your face is likely staying too open.
  3. Rehearse the motorcycle feel slowly. From the top, feel the lead wrist bow slightly as the body begins to unwind.
