Using a metronome for tempo - Putting

Using a metronome is a classic way to train your putting rhythm. I personally like using a setting of about 70 beats per minute. It's a good starting point for most golfers. Feel free to adjust it faster or slower if your swing feels dramatically different. When using the metronome, try to emphasize taking the putter away on one beat and then striking the ball on the second beat. This timing should be the same regarless of putt length.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.200
This drill is training your tempo with a metronome.

2
00:00:08.200 --> 00:00:12.440
So not everybody kind of feels tempo the same way.

3
00:00:12.440 --> 00:00:14.480
Some people are much more auditory.

4
00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:17.880
So there's a lot of free metronome apps.

5
00:00:17.880 --> 00:00:21.040
You can hear that I've got a beat playing here.

6
00:00:21.040 --> 00:00:22.880
This is 70 beats per minute.

7
00:00:22.880 --> 00:00:24.120
That's a good starting point.

8
00:00:24.120 --> 00:00:29.520
Some people are a little bit slower, maybe as low as 64, and some people are as

9
00:00:29.520 --> 00:00:29.920
fast

10
00:00:29.920 --> 00:00:31.360
as about 80.

11
00:00:31.360 --> 00:00:36.520
But just kind of finding a rhythm that kind of feels like it matches your

12
00:00:36.520 --> 00:00:36.880
stroke.

13
00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:40.470
I think the more important thing is that you're consistent with the number

14
00:00:40.470 --> 00:00:41.600
rather than finding

15
00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:44.000
the perfect number for your swing.

16
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.000
So if you're going to train the metronome, then what we want to do is you are

17
00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:48.600
going to

18
00:00:48.600 --> 00:00:52.670
have one beat is going to be the start of the swing and the second beat is

19
00:00:52.670 --> 00:00:53.320
going to be

20
00:00:53.320 --> 00:00:54.320
impact.

21
00:00:54.320 --> 00:00:57.720
So we've got take away impact.

22
00:00:57.720 --> 00:00:59.440
Take away impact.

23
00:00:59.440 --> 00:01:01.200
Take away impact.

24
00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:02.920
Take away impact.

25
00:01:02.920 --> 00:01:04.600
Take away impact.

26
00:01:04.600 --> 00:01:06.320
Take away impact.

27
00:01:06.320 --> 00:01:07.920
Take away impact.

28
00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:14.040
Now the key here is to get the same tempo on different length swings.

29
00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:15.800
Take away impact.

30
00:01:15.800 --> 00:01:17.560
Take away impact.

31
00:01:17.560 --> 00:01:19.280
Take away impact.

32
00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:23.120
Take away impact.

33
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:26.500
That's one way to get the rate of falling because if you are really

34
00:01:26.500 --> 00:01:27.520
accelerating it,

35
00:01:27.520 --> 00:01:30.560
you'll make it hard to get ready for the next swing.

36
00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:34.040
Also it will tend to make it go slow fast and you'll have a hard time hitting

37
00:01:34.040 --> 00:01:34.900
that second

38
00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:36.560
beat.

39
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:39.960
So we will hit a couple here.

40
00:01:39.960 --> 00:01:44.430
I've got a fairly short put here, but the tempo should work regardless of the

41
00:01:44.430 --> 00:01:44.920
length

42
00:01:44.920 --> 00:01:45.920
of swing.

43
00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:49.160
And just in case we can't hear it, we'll keep the mantra going.

44
00:01:49.160 --> 00:01:50.920
Take away impact.

45
00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:52.600
Take away impact.

46
00:01:52.600 --> 00:01:54.560
Take away impact.

47
00:01:54.560 --> 00:01:58.400
And so you'll see that that had pretty good rhythm to it.

48
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:00.960
To me that feels like just letting the putter fall.

49
00:02:00.960 --> 00:02:02.640
So I kind of bring it back.

50
00:02:02.640 --> 00:02:03.640
Let it fall.

51
00:02:03.640 --> 00:02:04.640
Bring it back.

52
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:05.640
Let it fall.

53
00:02:05.640 --> 00:02:08.600
I'm doing that mostly with the larger muscles in my shoulder.

54
00:02:08.600 --> 00:02:14.900
But the letting it fall is more of a passive dead weight kind of wrecking ball

55
00:02:14.900 --> 00:02:15.640
image of

56
00:02:15.640 --> 00:02:21.360
hitting the ball rather than trying to overly accelerate it.

57
00:02:21.360 --> 00:02:23.440
You'll see if I overly accelerate it.

58
00:02:23.440 --> 00:02:27.590
It was hard for me to recreate accelerating it at the same amount in the same

59
00:02:27.590 --> 00:02:28.160
time.

60
00:02:28.160 --> 00:02:33.910
So I highly recommend training your gravity or training your consistent

61
00:02:33.910 --> 00:02:35.160
acceleration.

62
00:02:35.160 --> 00:02:38.880
If you're not too much into some of the feels such as the weights and the pend

63
00:02:38.880 --> 00:02:39.520
ulum and things

64
00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:43.920
like that, then I highly recommend trying an auditory approach using a metron

65
00:02:43.920 --> 00:02:44.400
ome.

66
00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:47.720
It's the one more long one.

67
00:02:47.720 --> 00:02:49.520
Take away impact.

68
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:51.240
Take away impact.

69
00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:53.240
Take away impact.

70
00:02:53.240 --> 00:02:56.720
Kind of like that.
