Ultimate Start Line Station - Putting

For this station, you'll need a ball with a line on it and a yard/meter stick to balance your ball on. Line the ball up vertically and practice rolling the ball wherever the stick is aimed. This station can be useful for training your putter face control, as well as for training committing to a specific line.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,000
This drill is the ultimate start line training station.

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:11,000
So we're going to focus in on start line.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:17,000
There are three skills to being a really good putter, controlling speed, reading the

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:21,000
green, and start line or starting the ball in the intended line.

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:26,000
So what I'm going to do here is I've got a yardstick that has a hole in it, and what

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:33,000
I'm going to do is I'm going to use the hole to place the golf ball, and I'm going to

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:39,000
place the golf ball with a thick black line or in this case, blue or red.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:43,000
But basically with a thick line going around the circumference of the ball, you can either

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:49,000
do this with the piece of PVC pipe or they sell little stencils or you can order them

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:51,000
online.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:53,000
It's really good.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:58,000
The line is a really good diagnostic to how well you're controlling the putter face, how

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:03,000
well you're getting square, roll, and over in.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:09,000
So what I've got here, the ball is straight up and down on top of the drawer, now we're

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:11,000
the meter stick.

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:15,000
And I'm going to use a meter stick because I want to commit to a line.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:18,000
So I'm going to make a little adjustment here.

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
You don't come back.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:27,000
So I've now aimed this meter stick where I want the ball to start, and the ball is straight

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:28,000
up and down.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:36,000
So if I hit a good putt, the ball is going to roll end over in.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:42,000
And if it rolls end over in, we can see a little bit of a wobble in that one.

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:45,000
So it wasn't quite perfect.

00:01:45,000 --> 00:01:47,000
But I also saw a little bit more of the break.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:52,000
So this is going to help me commit to a line.

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:55,000
And then once I commit to a line, I'm going to forget about that.

00:01:55,000 --> 00:01:59,000
And I'm just going to train, rolling the ball, and over in.

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:02,000
So that one rolled a bit more end over in.

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:07,000
If that happens, you'll see one line, and you'll see that that tracked in towards the

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:08,000
golf wall.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:15,000
Here's a handful of videos showing this common trend that a lot of golfers over 90%

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:19,000
of golfers on tour will use a line of sub-sort on the ball.

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:36,000
And here's a bunch of them rolling it end over in, especially on these shorter putts.

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:43,000
After seeing those examples, you're probably, you bought in that, okay, I want to get

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:46,000
the ball rolling end over in.

00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:49,000
This is really coming down to my putter face control.

00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:56,000
If I tend to have more of a cut stroke or more of a hook kind of flip stroke, that will

00:02:56,000 --> 00:03:03,000
tend to cause the ball to launch in spin, and so the ball won't go end over in.

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:08,000
So here you'll see if I have the putter face open and cut across.

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:12,000
Yes, I can hit the putt where it goes online, but you can see that that did not roll very

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:13,000
well.

00:03:13,000 --> 00:03:18,000
It's going to be really difficult for me to be a consistent putter, both in terms of

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:23,000
start line as well as distance control if the ball is not rolling end over in.

00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:29,000
So that's why this is one of my kind of go to ultimate diagnostics for just seeing how

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:33,000
good all that hit a little something midway and kicked it left.

00:03:33,000 --> 00:03:36,000
It was rolling end over in, it was a good stroke.

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:41,000
We'll try one more time, although I think that ball is now in the way, so we'll just hit

00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:42,000
through it.

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:47,000
So that's rolling end over in, right in the center of the cup.

00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:49,000
Quick little demo.

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:54,000
We've got the line straight up and down.

00:03:54,000 --> 00:04:00,000
We're going to try to match it, and then we're going to try and roll ball end over it.
