Swing Analysis - Patrick Reed

While Masters Champion Patrick Reed may have a few idiosyncrasies to his swing, he does do an excellent job of controlling his path (using different parts of his body) to produce a consistent draw. If you struggle with getting your arms to flatten and shallow the club in transition, then be sure to pay attention to this breakdown to understand how and why Patrick does this so well.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.360
In this analysis video we're going to take a look at Patrick Reed. Now Patrick

2
00:00:06.360 --> 00:00:10.640
Reed is one of the young stars on tour. He is currently fourth in the FedEx

3
00:00:10.640 --> 00:00:16.800
Cup and 15th in the world ranking and he is 20th in strokes gain T degree and

4
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:21.240
21st in strokes game putting. So he's got a pretty good well-rounded game but

5
00:00:21.240 --> 00:00:24.320
we're going to talk about some of the idiosyncrasies of his swing and how

6
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:28.840
they help explain some of his driving accuracy problems and why he's such a

7
00:00:28.840 --> 00:00:33.920
good bunker player. So stay tuned we're going to take a look at what makes his

8
00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:40.720
swing work and how you can apply some of it to your own game. When I do these

9
00:00:40.720 --> 00:00:45.520
analysis I think it's important that we focus on the things that kind of look

10
00:00:45.520 --> 00:00:49.000
weird or the idiosyncrasies of his swing and talking about why they work

11
00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:53.160
because all of these tour golfers are going to have pretty good swing paths

12
00:00:53.160 --> 00:00:57.120
pretty good face control you know compared to the average golfer. They're

13
00:00:57.120 --> 00:01:00.130
going to have very good sequencing there's going to be a lot more similarities.

14
00:01:00.130 --> 00:01:00.280
So

15
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:05.240
when we start with Patrick Reed we're going to look at the transition and the

16
00:01:05.240 --> 00:01:09.680
release because that's where we see a lot of the weird moves. One of my

17
00:01:09.680 --> 00:01:13.960
favorite lines is what looks weird and what is this doing for the golfer. So if

18
00:01:13.960 --> 00:01:18.080
we take a look at the face-on view you'll see that the first thing that looks

19
00:01:18.080 --> 00:01:18.320
weird

20
00:01:18.320 --> 00:01:24.650
in his transition is his right leg tends to straighten and his left foot tends

21
00:01:24.650 --> 00:01:24.800
to

22
00:01:24.800 --> 00:01:29.840
replay it in a more closed position. So here he was at the top of the swing and

23
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:35.520
you can see that his lead foot is pointed slightly out that way and then a few

24
00:01:35.520 --> 00:01:40.000
frames later it's pointed pretty much at the golf ball. Now during the release

25
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:46.760
what's going to look weird is that he's going to basically have that left foot

26
00:01:46.760 --> 00:01:54.330
spin and move behind him as he releases the club. So from this face-on view it

27
00:01:54.330 --> 00:01:54.600
's

28
00:01:54.600 --> 00:01:57.440
a little better frame rate you'll be able to see there's that straightening of

29
00:01:57.440 --> 00:01:57.520
the

30
00:01:57.520 --> 00:02:01.850
leg he's replanting his foot in a little bit more closed position and then as

31
00:02:01.850 --> 00:02:02.000
he

32
00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:07.760
comes down and through the release you can watch there's the toe of his left

33
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:12.120
foot and as he comes through you can see that the toe of his left foot is now

34
00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:18.520
somewhere back there. So why would this golfer have this little replanting with

35
00:02:18.520 --> 00:02:22.760
the feet and then change of movement during the release? That's what we're

36
00:02:22.760 --> 00:02:27.720
going to discuss so that you can understand how he is able to get the

37
00:02:27.720 --> 00:02:33.280
club to swing the way that he does. So if we jump back to transition and we

38
00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:33.480
look

39
00:02:33.480 --> 00:02:38.480
at the engine of his swing you can see that his lower body tends to rotate

40
00:02:38.480 --> 00:02:44.240
relatively quickly and compared to his left foot he doesn't seem to have very

41
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:51.120
much lateral movement of the lower body. So from the down-the-line view that

42
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:56.400
would give the appearance that his hips are going to be more level here then

43
00:02:56.400 --> 00:02:57.360
you

44
00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:03.350
know someone who has a little bit more of the axis tilt or hip slide. So there

45
00:03:03.350 --> 00:03:03.640
's

46
00:03:03.640 --> 00:03:08.960
a couple reasons that he might be doing that but one of the most likely is if

47
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:15.880
we take a look at the face-on when he when he does this little hip rotation

48
00:03:15.880 --> 00:03:20.720
move we'll see in a later video that he's going to be shallowing out the club

49
00:03:20.720 --> 00:03:26.160
with his arms a pretty good amount. So in order to get the the path right he's

50
00:03:26.160 --> 00:03:29.180
going to have to have a certain amount of steeps and a certain amount of

51
00:03:29.180 --> 00:03:33.880
shallows. Now because his upper body is pretty much on top of his lower body

52
00:03:33.880 --> 00:03:40.040
that's going to inherently add a little bit of a steep. So in order to prevent

53
00:03:40.040 --> 00:03:43.920
that he's going to keep or I guess in order to balance that he's going to keep

54
00:03:43.920 --> 00:03:49.280
more of his mass in his upper body behind the golf ball. Now because of that

55
00:03:49.280 --> 00:03:54.440
the left foot is basic or the yeah the left foot is going to be more

56
00:03:54.440 --> 00:03:59.440
unweighted at impact and it's going to have freedom to kind of slide and rotate

57
00:03:59.440 --> 00:04:04.320
as he goes through. Now the one of the questions is always well why doesn't he

58
00:04:04.320 --> 00:04:09.080
have more of this lateral movement so that he would have more of a look like

59
00:04:09.080 --> 00:04:14.360
that as he came into the ball instead of straight up and down. Well part of

60
00:04:14.360 --> 00:04:14.920
what

61
00:04:14.920 --> 00:04:21.890
I see going on with his movement is when he if he was more side bent here as we

62
00:04:21.890 --> 00:04:22.040
're

63
00:04:22.040 --> 00:04:25.280
looking at this down the line if he was more side bent here and he had a little

64
00:04:25.280 --> 00:04:29.920
bit more of that hip bump then in order to have the same path you would have to

65
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:35.040
have the arms work a little bit more across his body the white movement that

66
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:41.720
we describe on our site. Now Patrick Reed is one of the a larger golfer and

67
00:04:41.720 --> 00:04:45.280
he's got a little bit more mass in his stomach and so that white movement would

68
00:04:45.280 --> 00:04:50.040
be very very difficult so you will tend to see with golfers who are a little

69
00:04:50.040 --> 00:04:50.200
bit

70
00:04:50.200 --> 00:04:53.880
stockier like this that they're going to have more of a rotational movement and

71
00:04:53.880 --> 00:04:59.040
not take advantage of some of the the lower body translations. Now part of

72
00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:06.280
that will show up in his some of his statistics so he is currently a hundred

73
00:05:06.280 --> 00:05:12.440
90th in driving accuracy and when it comes to club that speed he's 29th but his

74
00:05:12.440 --> 00:05:16.400
total rank in distance is 73rd so there are a number of guys who don't swing

75
00:05:16.400 --> 00:05:16.560
the

76
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:20.960
club as fast as he does but get more out of it as far as the launch

77
00:05:20.960 --> 00:05:25.160
characteristics and part of that is going to be because of this lack of tilt

78
00:05:25.160 --> 00:05:25.440
and

79
00:05:25.440 --> 00:05:30.120
how that relates to the longer swing but that's also part of the reason why he

80
00:05:30.120 --> 00:05:36.400
does pretty well with the the wedges his iron ranking is higher than his driver

81
00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:43.480
ranking so he would fit into more of a stacked type swing not stacked until but

82
00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:46.800
stacked as in his upper body is more on top of his lower body he doesn't have a

83
00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:51.920
huge amount of that access till so he's gonna struggle a little bit with the

84
00:05:51.920 --> 00:05:56.160
path with the driver as well as maximizing his distance. Now let's talk a

85
00:05:56.160 --> 00:06:01.000
little bit about how he shallows the club during transition because I think

86
00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:05.640
that's one of the key movements that makes him one of the more promising

87
00:06:05.640 --> 00:06:11.640
rising star. So here we have a great close-up with a good frame rate of

88
00:06:11.640 --> 00:06:16.720
Patrick Reed going into his transition so we know that the lower body is going

89
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:20.920
to do a little straightening pivot move but I what I want you to look at is I

90
00:06:20.920 --> 00:06:25.680
want you to look at the movement of his arms and shoulders so just as a

91
00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:29.520
reference line not giving you any amount that you should be striving for you

92
00:06:29.520 --> 00:06:29.680
can

93
00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:34.440
see where he has the club there now as he starts going up towards the or as

94
00:06:34.440 --> 00:06:39.040
he's ending his backswing in kind of starting transition you'll see that the

95
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:43.720
the club has already started to shallow out slightly and now as he starts down

96
00:06:43.720 --> 00:06:48.560
you can see that it's shallowing out even more so one of the things that we

97
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:52.680
talk about with the arm shallowing is this difference between the club moving

98
00:06:52.680 --> 00:07:00.760
or the grip of the club moving straight down versus moving more out you can see

99
00:07:00.760 --> 00:07:06.600
that Patrick does a great job in transition of getting the club to shallow

100
00:07:06.600 --> 00:07:12.680
and move more out so now because he has the arms in a very good shallow

101
00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:13.320
position

102
00:07:13.320 --> 00:07:17.240
he can get away with having his body in a little bit more steep or a little bit

103
00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:22.080
more stacked version and just rotate around because most of the shallowing

104
00:07:22.080 --> 00:07:26.720
has happened from the arms with a little bit of shallowing happening from the

105
00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:32.280
body backing up now that's also part of the reason why he appears to have that

106
00:07:32.280 --> 00:07:38.240
that stall through impact to allow the the club to kind of tumble and catch up

107
00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:43.000
but the the shallow piece that he does in transition is really beautiful and

108
00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:50.120
part of the reason why I think he has had the success that he has had but that

109
00:07:50.120 --> 00:07:50.200
's

110
00:07:50.200 --> 00:07:55.320
also part of the reason why he's able to hit the ball with as much curve or as

111
00:07:55.320 --> 00:08:00.880
much draw as he tends to so it's one of those catch 22s or I guess one of those

112
00:08:00.880 --> 00:08:06.200
trade-offs of how much you want to draw the ball how much you want to have the

113
00:08:06.200 --> 00:08:10.600
ability to shape your shots Patrick Reed has his pattern figured out and he

they help explain some of his driving accuracy problems and why he's such a

9
00:00:40.720 --> 00:00:45.520
analysis I think it's important that we focus on the things that kind of look

10
00:00:45.520 --> 00:00:49.000
weird or the idiosyncrasies of his swing and talking about why they work

11
00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:53.160
because all of these tour golfers are going to have pretty good swing paths

12
00:00:53.160 --> 00:00:57.120
pretty good face control you know compared to the average golfer. They're

13
00:00:57.120 --> 00:01:00.130
going to have very good sequencing there's going to be a lot more similarities.

14
00:01:00.130 --> 00:01:00.280
So

15
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:05.240
when we start with Patrick Reed we're going to look at the transition and the

16
00:01:05.240 --> 00:01:09.680
release because that's where we see a lot of the weird moves. One of my

17
00:01:09.680 --> 00:01:13.960
favorite lines is what looks weird and what is this doing for the golfer. So if

18
00:01:13.960 --> 00:01:18.080
we take a look at the face-on view you'll see that the first thing that looks

19
00:01:18.080 --> 00:01:18.320
weird

20
00:01:18.320 --> 00:01:24.650
in his transition is his right leg tends to straighten and his left foot tends

21
00:01:24.650 --> 00:01:24.800
to

22
00:01:24.800 --> 00:01:29.840
replay it in a more closed position. So here he was at the top of the swing and

23
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:35.520
you can see that his lead foot is pointed slightly out that way and then a few

24
00:01:35.520 --> 00:01:40.000
frames later it's pointed pretty much at the golf ball. Now during the release

25
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:46.760
what's going to look weird is that he's going to basically have that left foot

26
00:01:46.760 --> 00:01:54.330
spin and move behind him as he releases the club. So from this face-on view it

27
00:01:54.330 --> 00:01:54.600
's

28
00:01:54.600 --> 00:01:57.440
a little better frame rate you'll be able to see there's that straightening of

29
00:01:57.440 --> 00:01:57.520
the

30
00:01:57.520 --> 00:02:01.850
leg he's replanting his foot in a little bit more closed position and then as

31
00:02:01.850 --> 00:02:02.000
he

32
00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:07.760
comes down and through the release you can watch there's the toe of his left

33
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:12.120
foot and as he comes through you can see that the toe of his left foot is now

34
00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:18.520
somewhere back there. So why would this golfer have this little replanting with

35
00:02:18.520 --> 00:02:22.760
the feet and then change of movement during the release? That's what we're

36
00:02:22.760 --> 00:02:27.720
going to discuss so that you can understand how he is able to get the

37
00:02:27.720 --> 00:02:33.280
club to swing the way that he does. So if we jump back to transition and we

38
00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:33.480
look

39
00:02:33.480 --> 00:02:38.480
at the engine of his swing you can see that his lower body tends to rotate

40
00:02:38.480 --> 00:02:44.240
relatively quickly and compared to his left foot he doesn't seem to have very

41
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:51.120
much lateral movement of the lower body. So from the down-the-line view that

42
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:56.400
would give the appearance that his hips are going to be more level here then

43
00:02:56.400 --> 00:02:57.360
you

44
00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:03.350
know someone who has a little bit more of the axis tilt or hip slide. So there

45
00:03:03.350 --> 00:03:03.640
's

46
00:03:03.640 --> 00:03:08.960
a couple reasons that he might be doing that but one of the most likely is if

47
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:15.880
we take a look at the face-on when he when he does this little hip rotation

48
00:03:15.880 --> 00:03:20.720
move we'll see in a later video that he's going to be shallowing out the club

49
00:03:20.720 --> 00:03:26.160
with his arms a pretty good amount. So in order to get the the path right he's

50
00:03:26.160 --> 00:03:29.180
going to have to have a certain amount of steeps and a certain amount of

51
00:03:29.180 --> 00:03:33.880
shallows. Now because his upper body is pretty much on top of his lower body

52
00:03:33.880 --> 00:03:40.040
that's going to inherently add a little bit of a steep. So in order to prevent

53
00:03:40.040 --> 00:03:43.920
that he's going to keep or I guess in order to balance that he's going to keep

54
00:03:43.920 --> 00:03:49.280
more of his mass in his upper body behind the golf ball. Now because of that

55
00:03:49.280 --> 00:03:54.440
the left foot is basic or the yeah the left foot is going to be more

56
00:03:54.440 --> 00:03:59.440
unweighted at impact and it's going to have freedom to kind of slide and rotate

57
00:03:59.440 --> 00:04:04.320
as he goes through. Now the one of the questions is always well why doesn't he

58
00:04:04.320 --> 00:04:09.080
have more of this lateral movement so that he would have more of a look like

59
00:04:09.080 --> 00:04:14.360
that as he came into the ball instead of straight up and down. Well part of

60
00:04:14.360 --> 00:04:14.920
what

61
00:04:14.920 --> 00:04:21.890
I see going on with his movement is when he if he was more side bent here as we

62
00:04:21.890 --> 00:04:22.040
're

63
00:04:22.040 --> 00:04:25.280
looking at this down the line if he was more side bent here and he had a little

64
00:04:25.280 --> 00:04:29.920
bit more of that hip bump then in order to have the same path you would have to

65
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:35.040
have the arms work a little bit more across his body the white movement that

66
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:41.720
we describe on our site. Now Patrick Reed is one of the a larger golfer and

67
00:04:41.720 --> 00:04:45.280
he's got a little bit more mass in his stomach and so that white movement would

68
00:04:45.280 --> 00:04:50.040
be very very difficult so you will tend to see with golfers who are a little

69
00:04:50.040 --> 00:04:50.200
bit

70
00:04:50.200 --> 00:04:53.880
stockier like this that they're going to have more of a rotational movement and

71
00:04:53.880 --> 00:04:59.040
not take advantage of some of the the lower body translations. Now part of

72
00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:06.280
that will show up in his some of his statistics so he is currently a hundred

73
00:05:06.280 --> 00:05:12.440
90th in driving accuracy and when it comes to club that speed he's 29th but his

74
00:05:12.440 --> 00:05:16.400
total rank in distance is 73rd so there are a number of guys who don't swing

75
00:05:16.400 --> 00:05:16.560
the

76
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:20.960
club as fast as he does but get more out of it as far as the launch

77
00:05:20.960 --> 00:05:25.160
characteristics and part of that is going to be because of this lack of tilt

78
00:05:25.160 --> 00:05:25.440
and

79
00:05:25.440 --> 00:05:30.120
how that relates to the longer swing but that's also part of the reason why he

80
00:05:30.120 --> 00:05:36.400
does pretty well with the the wedges his iron ranking is higher than his driver

81
00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:43.480
ranking so he would fit into more of a stacked type swing not stacked until but

82
00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:46.800
stacked as in his upper body is more on top of his lower body he doesn't have a

83
00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:51.920
huge amount of that access till so he's gonna struggle a little bit with the

84
00:05:51.920 --> 00:05:56.160
path with the driver as well as maximizing his distance. Now let's talk a

85
00:05:56.160 --> 00:06:01.000
little bit about how he shallows the club during transition because I think

86
00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:05.640
that's one of the key movements that makes him one of the more promising

87
00:06:05.640 --> 00:06:11.640
rising star. So here we have a great close-up with a good frame rate of

88
00:06:11.640 --> 00:06:16.720
Patrick Reed going into his transition so we know that the lower body is going

89
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:20.920
to do a little straightening pivot move but I what I want you to look at is I

90
00:06:20.920 --> 00:06:25.680
want you to look at the movement of his arms and shoulders so just as a

91
00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:29.520
reference line not giving you any amount that you should be striving for you

92
00:06:29.520 --> 00:06:29.680
can

93
00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:34.440
see where he has the club there now as he starts going up towards the or as

94
00:06:34.440 --> 00:06:39.040
he's ending his backswing in kind of starting transition you'll see that the

95
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:43.720
the club has already started to shallow out slightly and now as he starts down

96
00:06:43.720 --> 00:06:48.560
you can see that it's shallowing out even more so one of the things that we

97
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:52.680
talk about with the arm shallowing is this difference between the club moving

98
00:06:52.680 --> 00:07:00.760
or the grip of the club moving straight down versus moving more out you can see

99
00:07:00.760 --> 00:07:06.600
that Patrick does a great job in transition of getting the club to shallow

100
00:07:06.600 --> 00:07:12.680
and move more out so now because he has the arms in a very good shallow

101
00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:13.320
position

102
00:07:13.320 --> 00:07:17.240
he can get away with having his body in a little bit more steep or a little bit

103
00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:22.080
more stacked version and just rotate around because most of the shallowing

104
00:07:22.080 --> 00:07:26.720
has happened from the arms with a little bit of shallowing happening from the

105
00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:32.280
body backing up now that's also part of the reason why he appears to have that

106
00:07:32.280 --> 00:07:38.240
that stall through impact to allow the the club to kind of tumble and catch up

107
00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:43.000
but the the shallow piece that he does in transition is really beautiful and

108
00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:50.120
part of the reason why I think he has had the success that he has had but that

109
00:07:50.120 --> 00:07:50.200
's

110
00:07:50.200 --> 00:07:55.320
also part of the reason why he's able to hit the ball with as much curve or as

111
00:07:55.320 --> 00:08:00.880
much draw as he tends to so it's one of those catch 22s or I guess one of those

112
00:08:00.880 --> 00:08:06.200
trade-offs of how much you want to draw the ball how much you want to have the

113
00:08:06.200 --> 00:08:10.600
ability to shape your shots Patrick Reed has his pattern figured out and he

114
00:08:10.600 --> 00:08:16.850
knows it very very well if you'd like to have your favorite golfer analyzed
