How to Shallow Your Arms for a Better Transition

After this video, you'll be able to:

  • Understand how to position the extender to encourage a shallower swing path
  • Practice transitioning your arms to avoid a steep angle and improve contact
  • Feel the correct release movements through the follow-through for consistent ball striking

In this drill, you'll learn how to use an extender to effectively shallow your arms during the transition phase of your swing. This technique helps improve your swing path and promotes better contact with the ball.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.040
This drill is arm-shallowing with the extender, so I've got my swing extender

2
00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:06.400
but you can just

3
00:00:06.400 --> 00:00:10.800
take an alignment stick and hold it just underneath the grip so it extends

4
00:00:10.800 --> 00:00:11.840
about a foot or so.

5
00:00:11.840 --> 00:00:17.600
The challenge with the extender drills is you can't really do swings where you

6
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:19.200
go past about

7
00:00:19.200 --> 00:00:22.960
waist height in the fall through because eventually the club would pass and you

8
00:00:22.960 --> 00:00:23.040
're

9
00:00:23.040 --> 00:00:27.900
going to hit yourself and it's either going to break it or at least disrupt the

10
00:00:27.900 --> 00:00:29.040
learning process.

11
00:00:29.040 --> 00:00:32.610
So what we're going to do with the shallowing with the extender is we're going

12
00:00:32.610 --> 00:00:33.360
to focus on

13
00:00:33.360 --> 00:00:40.720
transition. So what can often happen is during transition many golfers will

14
00:00:40.720 --> 00:00:41.840
rotate either the

15
00:00:41.840 --> 00:00:46.440
trail shoulder or the lead forearm and get the club working more vertically. So

16
00:00:46.440 --> 00:00:47.040
now because

17
00:00:47.040 --> 00:00:51.240
of the extender I can see that that's pointing more in line with my feet. You

18
00:00:51.240 --> 00:00:52.640
can see that's a very

19
00:00:52.640 --> 00:00:57.070
vertical position. If I got here one of the few ways that I would be able to

20
00:00:57.070 --> 00:00:58.160
then hit a golf ball

21
00:00:58.160 --> 00:01:03.300
would be to then stand up and kind of shallow it out very late but that's going

22
00:01:03.300 --> 00:01:03.600
to tend to

23
00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:10.220
cause some contact issues. So what I would prefer is during transition I'm

24
00:01:10.220 --> 00:01:11.840
going to shallow the club

25
00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:16.100
or get the butt end of the extender pointed out towards the target line. So now

26
00:01:16.100 --> 00:01:16.800
I've got the butt

27
00:01:16.800 --> 00:01:20.560
end of the club pointed out towards the target line. Now I can work on my

28
00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:21.840
release movements on

29
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:26.980
the way through. So you can actually hit little shots or slow motion kind of t

30
00:01:26.980 --> 00:01:28.960
ai chi style swings

31
00:01:28.960 --> 00:01:36.250
but you won't be able to follow through past about waist height in the follow

32
00:01:36.250 --> 00:01:37.200
through. Now

33
00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:41.850
one of the ways that you can see from the face on view is if you're using a

34
00:01:41.850 --> 00:01:43.040
mirror or something

35
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:47.440
like that if the steeper you get it typically the higher the club head is going

36
00:01:47.440 --> 00:01:48.880
to look the shallower

37
00:01:48.880 --> 00:01:53.930
you get it the more the club head is going to look low compared to the hands.

38
00:01:53.930 --> 00:01:54.800
So if you go up

39
00:01:54.800 --> 00:01:58.320
towards the top of the swing and you shallow you'll see that the club head and

40
00:01:58.320 --> 00:01:59.440
your hands are about

41
00:01:59.440 --> 00:02:04.400
the same height where if you steepen the club head will be drastically higher

42
00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:06.640
than the the hands.

43
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:10.420
It's kind of aligns with these horizontal swings where the club head and the

44
00:02:10.420 --> 00:02:11.280
hands are about the

45
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:16.820
same height and then working on feeling that shallow movement here with a

46
00:02:16.820 --> 00:02:18.400
little bit of visual

47
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:24.660
guidance can really help you kind of overcome an overall tendency to get really

48
00:02:24.660 --> 00:02:25.840
steep in transition

49
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:28.240
especially if you're a visual learner.
