Bunker Line Drill

Simply draw a line in the sand (about 4 feet long) and then set up at one end of it so that the line is about 2 inches behind your normal ball position. Take a swing as if the ball was there, and simply notice where the club enters the sand, using the line as a reference point. After the swing, step forward a few inches so that you are set up to a fresh piece of the line and repeat. This is a great way to monitor consistency of your club path and location of the low point in your swing. If you have trouble with this drill, look at your weight distribution, the amount of movement of your sternum, and your release.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
This drill video is the line drill in the bunker.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:07,000
Just like there's a famous line drill for practicing your ball striking,

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:10,000
there's a famous line drill for practicing your bunker shots.

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:15,000
Essentially what we're going to do is the ball really just gets in the way the bunker is showing.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:22,000
So we're going to use a line just as a reference point to our setup to see where the club is entering the sand.

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:27,000
So we can do a lot of good bunker practice without having a ball there and then as we

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:32,000
if we pay attention to where the club is entering the sand, all we have to do is put the ball where it's supposed to be.

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:36,000
If you're taking bunker shots and occasionally you're not hitting the sand,

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:39,000
we'll now you're asking for a recipe for a disaster.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:43,000
Usually that's going to come from having a swing that's coming in either too flat or too shallow,

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:46,000
but we'll talk about that in the fall of the fixes.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:52,000
So I've got this line roughly off my logo here,

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:57,000
or pretty close to just center of the middle of my stance.

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:01,000
So what you'll do is you'll practice taking these right handed swings,

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:09,000
and you'll just notice where is the club entering the sand.

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:14,000
Now you'll notice with all of these I have a pretty full backswing and I have a pretty full finish.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:18,000
As we talked about briefly in the mechanics video,

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
you'll never see with the exception of the plug-by.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:25,000
You'll never see a good bunker player, have everything just stop rated impact.

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:30,000
There's a appearance of that in the full swing, you'll never see it in one-carshots.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:36,000
They will always have that big full finish where just like the distance wedges and the hands

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:38,000
are getting up above your chest or somewhere in there.

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:47,000
So again, up, letting it drop and has it drops that you add a little speed with the right hand,

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:50,000
not a lot of power from the body.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:53,000
So what you can do is you can start just going down the line.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:57,000
And if you see that your bottom is swing is kind of jumping all over the place.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:01:59,000
Sometimes here I'll demonstrate.

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:07,000
Sometimes it's back here, sometimes it's there, sometimes completely miss.

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:14,000
What you saw, if you're really a student being a good critical thinker,

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:18,000
what you might have seen when I was trying to make my bottom in the swing move was I was laying my

00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:24,000
upper body move all over the place. Remember, just like the finesse swing, keeping this helps

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:30,000
control where the bottom of the swing is. If I let this lunge forward, it'll tend to move forward,

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:36,000
if I let this lunge back, it'll tend to stay back. So getting used to making a swing

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:43,000
where my throat doesn't move a whole lot. It's going to take a little practice,

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:48,000
but it's hugely valuable for being consistent in the bunker. So draw a line in the sand,

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:52,000
do this drill, once a week or so while you're really working on your bunker play,

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:59,000
and just pay attention to where the ball is, because then once you get good at hitting the sand,

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:05,000
right where that line is, you can take some swings and just put the ball a couple inches ahead of the

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:13,000
line and you should hit the nice bunker side.
