How to play the steep arms pattern

When you don't have time to train shallow arms, then you need to make a couple of easy adjustments to "swing your swing' that day. I've had a number of really good scoring rounds when I didn't have my A+ ball striking because I was able to adjust my strategy for that day. Oftentimes, when my arms are working a little bit steeper, I'll play more fades off the tee and more curved shots in general. I'll also avoid trying to kill the ball off the tee. Instead, I'll make my main focus that day about scoring with my short irons, wedge play, and putting while managing my long game. In this video, I walk you through a couple of different strategies for getting the most out of a steeper arm pattern.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:09,000
This concept video, we're going to discuss how to play the steep barn pattern.

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
So the steep barn pattern is not ideal, but if you don't have enough time to work on

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:21,000
the pieces, like let's say I've been doing the steep barn pattern for 20 years and I'm

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:26,000
going to play a trip in two weeks and I don't have a good feel of shallowing the

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:31,000
arms. Well then I probably don't want to do anything radically different to try to shallow

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:36,000
the arms. I want to just play that steep barn pattern. So if I'm going to play that steep

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:43,000
barn pattern then there's a couple suggestions I give for most golfers. First the easiest

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:49,000
thing to understand is the more that I create this power vertically my body is going to

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:53,000
shallow out. Now I could either do that from really tilting behind but that tends to cause

00:00:53,000 --> 00:01:00,000
some timing and low point issues or I could do that by staying a little bit taller. So I'm

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:06,000
going to stand up a little bit taller so that I can pull down and still have enough room

00:01:06,000 --> 00:01:11,000
to then get those arms straight. And as I'm getting the arms straight you'll notice I let

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:18,000
the club pass as opposed to kind of bending the arms and bringing it in like this. So I want

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:25,000
to make sure that from this tall position I'm really letting my arms stay straight and letting

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:33,000
the wrists do a little bit more down at the bottom kind of more like that as opposed to

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:39,000
trying to do too much with the body. If I am really steep with the arms then short term trying

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:47,000
to do too much with the body often disrupts my timing. The other piece with the steepness

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:52,000
aspect or with the staying tall aspect is I really want to make sure that my upper body

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:58,000
stays on top of the golf ball. It's very hard to be steep arms and be back behind the golf

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:01,000
ball kind of like this. And that's part of the reason why the steep arm pattern doesn't

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:08,000
tend to work as well with the driver. So I'm going to not only stay tall but I'm also going

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:17,000
to stay a little bit more on my front foot. This will help get the solid contact so get the

00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:24,000
low point ahead of the golf ball without having to overly rotate my body because what will

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:29,000
usually happen is if I have a steep arm pattern kind of like this then the last thing my body

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:34,000
will want to do is get wide open because I have a really hard time squaring it up. So I'm going

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:40,000
to be tall and I'm going to be on top. Those are the two kind of setup and pivot ideas that

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:45,000
complement the steep arm pattern. From a rhythm perspective I have to be really careful not to

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:51,000
swing out of my shoes. I have to be really careful not to try to ratchet things up. Oftentimes

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:59,000
when I have more of this shallow body steeper arm pattern it's more timing sensitive. I'm also

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:06,000
going to have a lot more trouble hitting kind of a flighted shot or easy tempo like three quarter

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:12,000
swings. I want to kind of stick with around the same tempo for most of my shots as best I can.

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:22,000
So because if I swing hard what will usually happen is I pull harder. I lose the kind of the timing

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:28,000
of when my body should be either lunging or standing up and I tend to get some

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:33,000
cut face and contact issues. So we're going to stay tall. We're going to stay on top of the ball

00:03:33,000 --> 00:03:39,000
and we're not going to swing hard. Ball flight wise everyone always asks is it better to hit

00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:45,000
more of a fader or draw that really depends on your grip and your quadface alignment? But I would say

00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:51,000
you will do better playing one ball flight rather than trying to do a whole lot of shot shaping.

00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:58,000
And I would say that the better ball flight to play is one that isn't dead straight. So if I

00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:05,000
more on top of it it's a little bit easier if I have the quadface open that thing's going to fade

00:04:05,000 --> 00:04:12,000
fairly you know a good amount and if I do end up keeping my body a little bit more closed

00:04:13,000 --> 00:04:21,000
then that's going to tend to draw a fair amount. So it becomes harder to have a really stable

00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:24,000
quadface so it's easier to have a little margin of error and make sure that I'm going to

00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:32,000
hit either a bigger fade or a bigger draw. Now lastly equipment wise you'll tend to do better with

00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:41,000
shorter clubs and even a little bit more upright. So the driver is typically the most problematic pattern

00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:49,000
which you can either try to resolve by choking up or remembering some of those other keys and making

00:04:49,000 --> 00:04:56,000
sure that you don't swing hard and that you stay pretty tall. So what I usually recommend is in order

00:04:56,000 --> 00:05:03,000
to play the driver you don't want to get the ball too far forward. So you're going to tend to hit

00:05:03,000 --> 00:05:10,000
the ball a little bit lower it might be a little bit spinnier coming off but that'll make it closer

00:05:10,000 --> 00:05:15,000
to your iron pattern so you don't have to make as a big change. I think that varying your ball

00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:23,000
position too much is almost the same thing as varying the length of swing. So quick summary tying

00:05:23,000 --> 00:05:28,000
it all together if you're going to you know let's say you're going on a trip and you haven't had

00:05:28,000 --> 00:05:33,000
time to figure out how to shallow out the arms and get the body a little bit more involved or steep.

00:05:33,000 --> 00:05:37,000
We're going to get a little bit taller a little bit more on top of that left foot so shoulders are

00:05:37,000 --> 00:05:44,000
a little bit more level. We're going to focus on staying within ourselves as far as our rhythm goes.

00:05:45,000 --> 00:05:49,000
Shotwise we're going to make sure that we're not trying to hit it dead straight. We're going to play

00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:56,000
one curve over the other and driver position we're definitely not going to try to kill it and we

00:05:56,000 --> 00:06:01,000
might be comfortable hitting it a little bit lower from being more on top of the ball. If you do that

00:06:02,000 --> 00:06:07,000
oftentimes some of these steep arm golfers have pretty good short games this will be a way you can

00:06:07,000 --> 00:06:11,000
manage the full swing avoid some of those big numbers keep it in play until you have enough time

00:06:11,000 --> 00:06:19,000
where you can work on putting some of these pieces together. So let's do one more difference so we'll

00:06:19,000 --> 00:06:28,000
do one where I do the steep arm pattern kind of like that little less body turn little more

00:06:28,000 --> 00:06:35,000
own arm pull um kept the body a little bit more tall and quiet and that will do more of my normal

00:06:37,000 --> 00:06:44,000
so a little bit more arm shallow little bit more body rotation kind of like that.

00:06:49,000 --> 00:06:51,000
