How Side Bend Can Cause Fat Shots

The side bend is a key movement to the proper body motion in a golf swing. Combined with rotation, it gives the appearance of the classic tour impact position. Many golfer struggle with side bend, not because of lack of side bend but because of a lack of the wipe movement from the arms.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
The drill is the geometry of the side bend.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So this is kind of a little bit of a concept video but to help you explore the wipe

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:11,000
and how it relates to the side bend.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
A lot of golfers who start with this program or come see me in person tend to have more

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:22,000
of the arm dominant swing where the arms are pretty straighted impact and as a result

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:25,000
you're not going to have very much side bend.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:31,000
Because if I was to have my arms and wrist straight, if I added side bend then the club

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:38,000
would bottom out relatively even with my right foot, something along in those lines.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:45,000
So the trick is even if I was to delay my wrist hinge, if I was to add side bend but

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:54,000
have my arm straight you would see that I could delay my wrist hinge but and avoid hitting

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:59,000
well behind the golf ball but what you would see is the club would work well low to high.

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:04,000
So the trick is how do I add this side bend which is naturally going to move the bottom

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:10,000
the swing backward and make the club swing low to high and how do I adjust my release

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,000
with my arms in order to get the club actually working high to low.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:16,000
That's where the wipe comes in.

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:21,000
So I can preset some of this side bend position and then I can experiment with trying to get

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:30,000
that white movement to get the club working high to low through that release phase.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:36,000
So you can do this one hitting balls and I like to give it to my students to kind of challenge

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:41,000
them on how well they're doing with the wipe but basically what you do is you're going

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:46,000
to preset, you can use the merry go round, you can use the Jackson 5 which you're going

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:53,000
to preset some of these body positions kind of like this and then the goal is to not just

00:01:53,000 --> 00:02:00,000
release the wrist which we caused me to hit behind it but to have a little bit of a white

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:04,000
movement so that I can still make solid contact.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:09,000
It helps you overcome the barrier of not being able to side bend without hitting it fat

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:15,000
and that barrier usually comes if you're not having enough of this white movement to keep

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:19,000
the club working high to low as you include this side bend rotation.
