Combo - 9 to 3 Four Square and Motorcycle

The motorcycle move works on rotating the shaft during the downswing. Rotating the shaft during the downswing is a hallmark of golfers with greater consistency. But, if you rotate the shaft you'll want to combine it with a shallower path. A shallower path also is a hallmark of golfers with greater consistency. This drill combination allows you to work on both at the same time. It also helps you clarify the feedback of reading ball flight curve.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.160
This drill is combining 9-3/4 square and 9-3 motorcycle. Many golfers need to

2
00:00:07.160 --> 00:00:12.280
work on their face-to-path relationship and when they do they tend to lose the

3
00:00:12.280 --> 00:00:17.680
path so one of the most common things that I see is golfers come in let's say

4
00:00:17.680 --> 00:00:21.560
with a clubface that's wide open kind of like this but not a whole lot of shaft

5
00:00:21.560 --> 00:00:26.320
rotation and a little bit from the outside and they hit weak shots but

6
00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:31.520
straight shots and with the driver it fades and they don't like how far it goes

7
00:00:31.520 --> 00:00:34.720
or how consistently they are. One of the first things that we need to work on

8
00:00:34.720 --> 00:00:34.960
is

9
00:00:34.960 --> 00:00:39.760
shaft rotation getting the clubface square to the path so after they've

10
00:00:39.760 --> 00:00:43.320
learned to read feedback they say all right I can see that the clubface is

11
00:00:43.320 --> 00:00:47.680
open to the path I need to get that more closed and then what they'll do is

12
00:00:47.680 --> 00:00:52.320
they will try to do the motorcycle move but frequently they will steep in the

13
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:56.520
path like this in order to close the face and now they hit these massive

14
00:00:56.520 --> 00:01:03.240
poles so frequently what I do is while they're doing the shaft rotation or

15
00:01:03.240 --> 00:01:09.080
working on the motorcycle I'll just create the visual of four square so we

16
00:01:09.080 --> 00:01:13.500
won't get into any of the details of how they can shallow it out or get the

17
00:01:13.500 --> 00:01:18.600
club to swing more in out but I'll explain to them that when they close the

18
00:01:18.600 --> 00:01:24.480
face if the path stayed out to the left you're gonna hit big poles so they have

19
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:28.280
to shallow it out a little bit more well everything that shallows the club

20
00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:33.720
tends to open the face so that puts a higher priority on now doing that shaft

21
00:01:33.720 --> 00:01:38.960
rotation and doing that motorcycle movement so what I've done here I've

22
00:01:38.960 --> 00:01:43.960
taken the spray paint and drawn four square there normally I just use a tee

23
00:01:43.960 --> 00:01:47.040
and mark it in the ground but you should be able to see that and then I'll

24
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:53.600
usually start golfers with the ball teed up right in the center of it but I'll

25
00:01:53.600 --> 00:01:57.840
take away the ball I should say this is the the first step I do before I put

26
00:01:57.840 --> 00:01:57.840
the

27
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:02.020
ball there and tee it up I'll have them go back to that nine o'clock position

28
00:02:02.020 --> 00:02:09.760
close the club face and then try to get the club to brush the ground going from

29
00:02:09.760 --> 00:02:15.520
square number one to square number three so basically back to here close the

30
00:02:15.520 --> 00:02:20.080
club face brush through there and then check in the finish the position to make

31
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:26.950
sure that it stayed close so this forces them to pay attention to the path

32
00:02:26.950 --> 00:02:27.520
while

33
00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:34.440
focusing on the club face when they do them together it'll look something like

34
00:02:34.440 --> 00:02:42.720
close the club face little on the toe a little bit of a pole so I probably was

35
00:02:42.720 --> 00:02:48.720
straight and then into box four not quite enough one to three but it allows me

36
00:02:48.720 --> 00:02:49.680
to

37
00:02:49.680 --> 00:02:54.680
figure out what I need to work on it gives me a little bit better feedback

38
00:02:54.680 --> 00:03:01.000
than just doing that was better there so it gives me more feedback than just

39
00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:06.960
doing the nine to three with the motorcycle those two skills have to go

40
00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:11.280
hand-in-hand because if you change your face the path relationship your path

41
00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:11.320
will

42
00:03:11.320 --> 00:03:15.280
have to adjust as well this is a great way to work on it combining nine to

43
00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:20.200
threes or going into full swings but using the motorcycle with some type of

44
00:03:20.200 --> 00:03:23.620
path alignment like either the four square or the bowling alleys I really

45
00:03:23.620 --> 00:03:28.560
prefer doing nine to three in combination with the four square all right

46
00:03:28.560 --> 00:03:33.840
here we have the close-up view so again I'll normally just do this by carving a

47
00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:38.600
line like that like I showed in the in the four square drill but here we've got

48
00:03:38.600 --> 00:03:42.400
a spray paint to make that a little bit easier I'm gonna work on trying to get

49
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:47.780
the club face closed but closed coming from here golfers tend to either come

50
00:03:47.780 --> 00:03:52.480
from the inside with it open or come from the outside with it closed it takes a

51
00:03:52.480 --> 00:03:56.800
little bit of training and getting used to coming from the inside while still

52
00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:01.720
having it closed so you get set up you can do this either off the ground or on

53
00:04:01.720 --> 00:04:06.510
the tee I usually prefer starting on the tee but we'll go for it so you're

54
00:04:06.510 --> 00:04:06.560
gonna

55
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:12.580
go nine o'clock close the club face swinging through so that it launches

56
00:04:12.580 --> 00:04:16.880
pretty straight even though the club face stayed closed you can then work work

57
00:04:16.880 --> 00:04:23.120
this pattern up to four and four swings so we can do a little three quarter

58
00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:30.760
close the club face that one the ball launched left so now focus I'll get the

59
00:04:30.760 --> 00:04:35.800
club face set and then I'll shift my focus more to the path so club face

60
00:04:35.800 --> 00:04:41.880
closed that one was much better in terms of ball flight started a little right

61
00:04:41.880 --> 00:04:46.640
and then drew back but this is a great way to work on combining the face and

62
00:04:46.640 --> 00:04:51.040
path you just visualize the path and you focus on the feel of the club face

63
00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:56.440
and together it allows you to get good feedback while you're putting in reps
