Assessing A Fall Line - Putting

Using your body's feel, you can find out where the fall line around the hole is. If you are 90 degrees to the fall line, it will break the greatest distance, if you are somewhere in between, it will break some. To find the fall line, you can either use your feet, and find the place around the perimeter of the putt where you are not walking uphill or downhill. This is best done by closing your eyes. Also, you could imagine doing a push up around the whole. Wherever you would place your hands and they BOTH would be at the same height as the hole is a straight putt (the location of the fall line).

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.530
Okay, so I'm going to show you how to assess a fall line because this can help

2
00:00:07.530 --> 00:00:08.080
you identify

3
00:00:08.080 --> 00:00:10.520
what's going to happen in the last four feet.

4
00:00:10.520 --> 00:00:16.360
Essentially, as the ball slows down, it's going to drift towards the fall line.

5
00:00:16.360 --> 00:00:19.280
So there are a couple of common ways.

6
00:00:19.280 --> 00:00:24.700
One way is as you walk around the hole, you can start to identify when you've

7
00:00:24.700 --> 00:00:25.360
gone from

8
00:00:25.360 --> 00:00:27.480
walking uphill to walking downhill.

9
00:00:27.480 --> 00:00:31.440
So in this particular case, it's right about here, which is where I would stop

10
00:00:31.440 --> 00:00:32.040
going down

11
00:00:32.040 --> 00:00:33.400
and start going up.

12
00:00:33.400 --> 00:00:38.830
So this right here would be a fall line, which is roughly going to be a

13
00:00:38.830 --> 00:00:40.380
straight putt.

14
00:00:40.380 --> 00:00:45.070
So if this is the straight putt, then if I'm putting from above there, it's

15
00:00:45.070 --> 00:00:45.900
going to funnel

16
00:00:45.900 --> 00:00:46.900
down this way.

17
00:00:46.900 --> 00:00:51.840
If I'm coming from below here, it's going to funnel in towards the fall line.

18
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:55.670
Another way that makes a lot of sense, especially if you've done a lot of

19
00:00:55.670 --> 00:00:57.120
outdoor sports, I

20
00:00:57.120 --> 00:00:58.560
call the push-up method.

21
00:00:58.560 --> 00:01:01.800
So Jeff Magnum was the first show to me.

22
00:01:01.800 --> 00:01:05.890
I think it's a great little tool if you've used a lot of outside on the grass,

23
00:01:05.890 --> 00:01:06.560
or outside

24
00:01:06.560 --> 00:01:09.480
on the grass, playing soccer, football, anything where you're used to getting

25
00:01:09.480 --> 00:01:10.040
your hands on

26
00:01:10.040 --> 00:01:11.800
the ground.

27
00:01:11.800 --> 00:01:15.890
Essentially, I'm going to imagine that I have to do a push-up around the hole,

28
00:01:15.890 --> 00:01:16.400
and I'm going

29
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:18.800
to try to figure out where my hands would be level.

30
00:01:18.800 --> 00:01:21.080
So I wouldn't want to do the push-up like this or like this.

31
00:01:21.080 --> 00:01:23.600
I want them to be level.

32
00:01:23.600 --> 00:01:28.300
So right here is where I would be pushing into a straight line.

33
00:01:28.300 --> 00:01:31.120
So again, this looks like the fall line.

34
00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:33.920
So those are two quick and easy methods.

35
00:01:33.920 --> 00:01:38.650
If you're more visual, you can imagine if water were flowing, where it would

36
00:01:38.650 --> 00:01:39.200
start to

37
00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:44.260
collect and funnel, because if it's on more of a side slope, it's going to find

38
00:01:44.260 --> 00:01:44.840
the fall

39
00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:46.800
line and funnel down that way.

40
00:01:46.800 --> 00:01:50.260
So those are three methods you can use to identify the fall line, which will

41
00:01:50.260 --> 00:01:50.740
help you

42
00:01:50.740 --> 00:01:52.400
read the last four feet of the putt.

Wherever you would place your hands and they BOTH would be at the same height as the hole is a straight putt (the location of the fall line).

on the grass, playing soccer, football, anything where you're used to getting

25
00:01:09.480 --> 00:01:10.040
your hands on

26
00:01:10.040 --> 00:01:11.800
the ground.

27
00:01:11.800 --> 00:01:15.890
Essentially, I'm going to imagine that I have to do a push-up around the hole,

28
00:01:15.890 --> 00:01:16.400
and I'm going

29
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:18.800
to try to figure out where my hands would be level.

30
00:01:18.800 --> 00:01:21.080
So I wouldn't want to do the push-up like this or like this.

31
00:01:21.080 --> 00:01:23.600
I want them to be level.

32
00:01:23.600 --> 00:01:28.300
So right here is where I would be pushing into a straight line.

33
00:01:28.300 --> 00:01:31.120

collect and funnel, because if it's on more of a side slope, it's going to find

the fall

line and funnel down that way.

40

So those are three methods you can use to identify the fall line, which will

help you

read the last four feet of the putt.
