3 Inch Lean - Finesse Wedge Backswing

Use two alignment sticks to get a perspective of the amount of lateral shift that we recommend during the backswing. Place the two alignment sticks in the ground approximately three inches apart. Set up so that your chest, or chin, is directly in front of the yardage stick to the right as you face them. Then, to create the backswing, don't think about taking the club back, think about getting your chest or chin in front of the second stick. Practice this until it becomes fairly comfortable and then add swings down with a ball.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This finesse wedge drill video is called the 3-inch lean.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So I've got two alignment rods right here, one yellow, one orange.

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:11,000
And basically I've got them about three inches apart.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:15,000
Now when I'm doing this with my students typically I'll just stand up there in kind of the

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:19,000
Texas longhorn, you know, Hookhamhorn type style.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:23,000
And I'll say I'll put my pinky right in front of their shirt buttons and I'll say during

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:29,000
the backswing I want you to get your shirt buttons or your nose in front of my index finger.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
So it ends up looking, I get in my good setup position.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:37,000
It ends up looking something like that.

00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:45,000
Now that upper body shifting forward during the backswing helps you sequence your transition.

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:51,000
If the lower body stays pretty much set during the backswing or stays input,

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:56,000
what'll end up happening is you'll tend to lead with your lower body and create too much lag.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:01,000
And that'll create too much downcock which will mess with your consistency of contact.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:05,000
Because then you start getting shaft lean and you start getting too much dig.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:11,000
So during the backswing by having your upper body going into this front,

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:17,000
you know, this 3-inch little shift forward that helps take away the tendency to lead with your hips.

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:24,000
And sequencing is one of the big keys for solid contact as well as for consistency at distance control.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:29,000
So practice shifting, I think this is the first key that most players should work on

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:32,000
if they're struggling with their finesse wedge swing.

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:38,000
Because this can apply whether we're talking about a block and hold technique or a true finesse wedge technique

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:46,000
or even a distance wedge having a little bit of this forward shift helps control your sequencing and the bottom of your swing.
