Interesting Case of Study

Hello Coaches,
I would like to share an intersting case of study and kindly have your opinion / ideas...
In the first video I attach there is a student at his first lesson. He can play from the tee with the driver (some slice / push slice) but He can't from the grass with the irons... 90% of shots was shanks.
For me the club face is tremendusly open and he try to early extend + cast to find the way to square it.
We worked on grip, motorcycle and a lot of left hand single arm traing in order to close the face.
The second and third videos (FO / DTL iron + DTL driver) is after 2 months and about 10 golf sessions. The face now looks better and an amazing improvement with all kind of irons from 4 iron to Sw the contact, distance and ball flight is really really good based on his HCP and Goals.
In the same time He losts completly his game with the woods (driver,3 woods) with some block to the right and snap hook...
So week by week he improves his irons / wedges game but lost his woods game.
I never see a huge different in the Iron / wood game.
Any ideas to improve.
Thank you for your time.
Alessio.

It does look like you've done some good work on the iron swing. His shaft lean looks much better, and his face with the iron is in a much better position.
With the driver, the release doesn't match the clubface anymore. If you look at the first picture, the clubface is a good 15-20 degrees more closed than with the iron. With that clubface, he would have to be open 50 degrees or more with his pelvis. I would investigate why the clubface is in such a different position with the iron vs the driver. Does the grip change with the driver? I'd start there, then give him the choice of either playing with the clubface or getting the body more open to match it.
What might have happened with the driver is that he became more upper body focused with the lead arm only drills and needs to do some sequence work. In general, I think the irons are more about the geometry, while the driver is more about the dynamics. That said, it would be really hard to recover from that driver shaft parallel position.

Thank you Tyler 🙏,
Yes the clubface with the driver is defenitly too much close. I was little bit scared to work on something that “reopen” the clubface based on iron improvements.
So I will try to work on the grip (a big grip may help?), stop the motorcycle drills and we will work more on body transition => release!
Thank you for your time, I appreciated!

How did it go this week? If you're scared to use the phrase, reopen, you can always use the word "match" or "balance" the closed clubface. Trying sequencing first might also make him more open to tweaking the face. If he understands why the ball is flying the way it is, then he will understand the few options that might work!
Happy Golfing,
