Top of swing

Top of swing (Swing positions) is the checkpoint where your backswing finishes and transition begins. This is slightly different for each part of the body with the hips changing direction first and the club changing direction last. Get the club, arms, and torso organized—width, one- vs two-plane feel, trail arm bend, shoulder blade motion, and club path—so you’re not across-the-line, laid off, or overset. A precise top position improves sequencing, delivers a square face, and prevents hit from the top, unlocking more speed, consistency, and cleaner contact.

  • Learn ideal backswing width and arm height, with towel and hanger drills.
  • Sync trail arm and scapula; point trail elbow at trail hip.
  • Manage open/closed at the top, pronation, and wrist set to control face.
  • Time hip rotation and centered glute load for stable pivot and shaft plane.
  • Connect top position to transition for smoother delivery and longer, straighter shots.
