Quick Vs Slow in Transition

Golfers that will tend to feel slow in transition usually have a swing that is steep and upper body dominated. When they get a more balanced sequence, the swing usually feels slow. However, golfers who have more early extension, slide, or excessive lower body use will often report feeling their swing is quicker or more compact. Don't be scared of either feeling but trust the one that applies to your game.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.480
This concept video, we're going to discuss quick versus slow in transition.

2
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:14.870
So I had a member question come in about should the transition, he has a couple

3
00:00:14.870 --> 00:00:15.480
different

4
00:00:15.480 --> 00:00:20.090
swings, should the transition feel slow or should the transition feel more kind

5
00:00:20.090 --> 00:00:20.800
of punchy

6
00:00:20.800 --> 00:00:21.800
or quick?

7
00:00:21.800 --> 00:00:25.800
Or the way he actually described it was should it feel like one movement where

8
00:00:25.800 --> 00:00:26.520
everything

9
00:00:26.520 --> 00:00:30.480
kind of goes at the ball or should it feel like two movements?

10
00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:35.620
Now I'm always cautious when I answer what should this feel like because in my

11
00:00:35.620 --> 00:00:35.640
years

12
00:00:35.640 --> 00:00:39.950
of coaching I've experienced golfers describing feels that I would have never

13
00:00:39.950 --> 00:00:40.780
imagined.

14
00:00:40.780 --> 00:00:46.810
So my normal response is my goal is to use the drill to get you to do it and

15
00:00:46.810 --> 00:00:47.600
then you

16
00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:50.400
pay attention and tell me what it feels like.

17
00:00:50.400 --> 00:00:56.680
In this area of quick versus slow or one versus two I have noticed some trends.

18
00:00:56.680 --> 00:01:01.790
So in general it can be either so I'm going to give you which way I think it

19
00:01:01.790 --> 00:01:02.320
will apply

20
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:04.200
to you and your swing.

21
00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:09.320
If you tend to be more lower body dominant, if you tend to have more early

22
00:01:09.320 --> 00:01:09.560
extension from

23
00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:15.400
the leg drive or if you tend to have more slide from the knee and ankle drive

24
00:01:15.400 --> 00:01:16.040
then in

25
00:01:16.040 --> 00:01:21.200
general I think it will feel quicker and more like one movement because what

26
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:21.800
usually happens

27
00:01:21.800 --> 00:01:25.340
is when you go with your lower body the arms weight and then they have to feel

28
00:01:25.340 --> 00:01:25.880
like they

29
00:01:25.880 --> 00:01:31.460
kind of snap down to the bottom where if you do a better job maintaining your

30
00:01:31.460 --> 00:01:32.280
posture and

31
00:01:32.280 --> 00:01:37.450
using your abs and your core then you're going to tend to feel that all this is

32
00:01:37.450 --> 00:01:38.680
more connected

33
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:43.840
and that connectedness tends to make things feel like they are happening

34
00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:44.680
earlier because

35
00:01:44.680 --> 00:01:50.000
the arms don't really have to wait for this excessive lower body movement.

36
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:56.120
The opposite is if you have more of a cast, more of a kind of a lunge or a big

37
00:01:56.120 --> 00:01:56.840
spin of

38
00:01:56.840 --> 00:02:00.030
the upper body so if you tend to have more of a shoulder dominant or upper body

39
00:02:00.030 --> 00:02:00.560
dominant

40
00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:05.720
swing then you're most likely going to feel it's much slower when you do it

41
00:02:05.720 --> 00:02:06.200
correctly.

42
00:02:06.200 --> 00:02:09.620
So if you get to the top of the swing and you tend to really pull with that

43
00:02:09.620 --> 00:02:10.240
shoulder or

44
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:14.530
you tend to throw it with the arms or you tend to kind of lunge and pull

45
00:02:14.530 --> 00:02:15.440
forward like

46
00:02:15.440 --> 00:02:19.470
that then what will end up happening is there's this new movement of kind of

47
00:02:19.470 --> 00:02:20.240
bumping and you

48
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:24.310
have to wait until the arms get down to somewhere around here before they end

49
00:02:24.310 --> 00:02:25.040
up before they

50
00:02:25.040 --> 00:02:31.240
actually fire and so that now starts to feel like it's a more rhythmic or a one

51
00:02:31.240 --> 00:02:31.840
two kind

52
00:02:31.840 --> 00:02:38.260
of like a step than go compared to what you're used to doing which is going

53
00:02:38.260 --> 00:02:39.560
hard right away

54
00:02:39.560 --> 00:02:41.160
from the top of the swing.

55
00:02:41.160 --> 00:02:44.550
So I have noticed this trend it's more upper body dominant you're going to tend

56
00:02:44.550 --> 00:02:44.960
to feel

57
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:51.370
slow or smooth or one two in transition but if you're more of an early extender

58
00:02:51.370 --> 00:02:52.080
slider

59
00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:58.480
then you're going to tend to feel more of a unified one just fire straight from

60
00:02:58.480 --> 00:02:59.080
the top

61
00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:00.080
of the swing.

62
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:03.830
So if you're looking at video and you're exploring with some tempo feels

63
00:03:03.830 --> 00:03:04.840
hopefully this gives

64
00:03:04.840 --> 00:03:07.720
you a little direction as far as which you should try.

65
00:03:07.720 --> 00:03:12.120
My philosophy is you can try both or you can try a tempo related drill and then

66
00:03:12.120 --> 00:03:12.520
you can

67
00:03:12.520 --> 00:03:18.120
describe feel free to comment below does your swing feel quick and two part or

68
00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:18.960
does it feel

69
00:03:18.960 --> 00:03:24.810
fast and one part I've seen it go both ways when golfers make improvements from

70
00:03:24.810 --> 00:03:25.480
some type

71
00:03:25.480 --> 00:03:29.240
of inconsistent pattern to a little bit closer to the stock tour swing.

72
00:03:29.240 --> 00:03:32.960
So we'll try to do one good swing I'll tell you I can't tell you which one it's

73
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:33.280
going

74
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:40.120
to feel like but hopefully it's a good one just like that.
