How to Shallow Your Arms During Driver Transition

After this video, you'll be able to:

  • Understand how to position the handle of your club correctly during transition
  • Feel the difference between a proper shallow swing and common mistakes
  • Visualize your swing path with the handle-in-the-bucket technique

In this drill, you'll learn how to feel the correct shallowing of your arms during the transition phase of your driver swing. This essential movement helps improve your ball striking and consistency off the tee.

1
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000
This drill is handling the bucket for driver.

2
00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:08.400
So the handle in the bucket is kind of a visual drill for helping you feel the

3
00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:11.840
shallowness of the arms during transition.

4
00:00:11.840 --> 00:00:17.920
So basically to set it up, you're going to take a shaft, or in this case I've

5
00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:18.440
got just

6
00:00:18.440 --> 00:00:22.120
an old range bucket on the end of an old shaft.

7
00:00:22.120 --> 00:00:28.480
And I've got it set up slightly flatter than the driver line angle.

8
00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:34.280
So if I was setting this up for, say, a seven iron, it would be, this would

9
00:00:34.280 --> 00:00:34.740
probably be

10
00:00:34.740 --> 00:00:39.640
a little bit too flat, because you can see that the bucket is tilted on an

11
00:00:39.640 --> 00:00:40.240
angle kind

12
00:00:40.240 --> 00:00:42.880
of like this, compared to a seven iron, I would probably want it something like

13
00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:43.840
that.

14
00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:49.400
Other than adjusting the tilt, it's exactly the same drill, which is I'm going

15
00:00:49.400 --> 00:00:49.840
to work

16
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:54.890
on getting the handle of the club pointed in this general direction during

17
00:00:54.890 --> 00:00:56.040
transition.

18
00:00:56.040 --> 00:00:59.440
And remember, this is a transition drill.

19
00:00:59.440 --> 00:01:03.400
You're going to deviate from where this is pointing as you start to release the

20
00:01:03.400 --> 00:01:04.520
club.

21
00:01:04.520 --> 00:01:08.930
So if I'm doing this little handle in the bucket, I'm going to go up towards

22
00:01:08.930 --> 00:01:09.440
the top

23
00:01:09.440 --> 00:01:13.720
of the swing, and then as I start down, I'm going to try and basically get that

24
00:01:13.720 --> 00:01:14.280
handle.

25
00:01:14.280 --> 00:01:17.600
You can see that it would be going more or less straight through the bucket.

26
00:01:17.600 --> 00:01:21.040
So I'll choke up so that we can visualize that even more.

27
00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:25.020
So there, now I'm in delivery position, and then, of course, once I start to

28
00:01:25.020 --> 00:01:25.520
deliver

29
00:01:25.520 --> 00:01:30.000
the club, the handle is going to be pointed well away, where a lot of amateur

30
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:30.600
struggle

31
00:01:30.600 --> 00:01:35.280
is they will tend to get the handle pointed more straight down.

32
00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:39.950
So if I was set up to the golf ball, you could see that that would clearly miss

33
00:01:39.950 --> 00:01:40.760
the bucket.

34
00:01:40.760 --> 00:01:45.330
It would never have a chance of going in the bucket compared to if I did this

35
00:01:45.330 --> 00:01:45.840
in a good

36
00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:46.840
way.

37
00:01:46.840 --> 00:01:48.760
So I'll demonstrate from down the line.

38
00:01:48.760 --> 00:01:52.400
You can imagine I've got that bucket right about there.

39
00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:56.320
As I go up, it's going to point in the bucket just like so.

40
00:01:56.320 --> 00:02:01.810
So this is a general visual drill for experiencing some of the technical things

41
00:02:01.810 --> 00:02:02.740
that we talk

42
00:02:02.740 --> 00:02:05.440
about in How the Arms Shallow.

43
00:02:05.440 --> 00:02:11.040
Now one of the big keys is to make sure that when I'm doing this, I'm not

44
00:02:11.040 --> 00:02:12.040
getting this

45
00:02:12.040 --> 00:02:16.680
pointed in the bucket by early extending and standing up and using my spine.

46
00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:20.360
I'm doing this purely with my arm movement.

47
00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:24.980
So while I'm doing this kind of Jackson 5 and staying against the ground or the

48
00:02:24.980 --> 00:02:25.340
left

49
00:02:25.340 --> 00:02:27.120
tilt, the forward flex thing.

50
00:02:27.120 --> 00:02:31.070
So while I'm getting into this good delivery position, my arms should basically

51
00:02:31.070 --> 00:02:31.720
be pointing

52
00:02:31.720 --> 00:02:37.600
that shaft in the direction of this bucket before I initiate the release.

53
00:02:37.600 --> 00:02:41.270
So if you struggle, especially with getting steep in transition, this can be a

54
00:02:41.270 --> 00:02:41.960
good spatial

55
00:02:41.960 --> 00:02:46.240
awareness and overall visual drill for the overall path of the club and how you

56
00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:46.560
need

57
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:48.400
to shallow the arms during transition.
