Wrist Movements vs Grip

Shaft parallel is a great place to analyze your clubface. If you compare the clubface to the hand orientation at this position in the backswing and downswing, you can usually determine if you need to tweak your grip or if you need to adjust your arm motions during the swing.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,000
Okay, in this concept video, we're going to discuss the wrist movements versus the grip

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:10,000
for club-based control.

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:15,000
So there are three main factors for where is the club-based pointing in your swing.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:19,000
One is, how did you set up with your hands on the club?

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:25,000
Did you set up with the top of your wrist more on the right side?

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:27,000
Did you set up with it more on top?

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:31,000
This is what we refer to as stronger weak with either hand.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:36,000
So if the hands are more on top, this is in a weak position, which just means that as

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:40,000
you extend the arms, you will see the club-based tends to come back pointing more to

00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:42,000
the right or with more loft.

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:47,000
The more that you put your hands on the side on the trail side or underneath.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:52,000
Now as your arms release out in front of you, the club will tend to de-loft or come in more

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:53,000
clothes.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:55,000
Call that a strong grip.

00:00:55,000 --> 00:01:01,000
So how I set up with my hands is one factor, but then how I use my hands is the other.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:10,000
So if I set up with my hands like this and I twist my wrist or bow my wrist, the more

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:16,000
that I do, these movements that twist the club, that tends to close the club-based.

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:20,000
So those are the two main ones that I can influence the grip with.

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:23,000
The third one is shaffling or body position.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:30,000
So the problem is I don't want to adjust that one too much because it impacts contact

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:33,000
more than just what I'm doing with my hands.

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:38,000
So by getting the good merry-go-round, by getting into a good impact position, that puts

00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:42,000
the club head ahead of the golf ball, creating the shaffling.

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:47,000
And if I don't change anything, that shaffling typically opens the club-based somewhere

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:49,000
in the 20-degree range.

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:53,000
20-30 degrees is what I usually say.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:02:01,000
So then I either have to balance that by setting up with a stronger grip or by twisting

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:03,000
the club-based clothes.

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:09,000
If I want to try to figure out which one I want to change, I can look at the references

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:11,000
of a shaff parallel.

00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:17,000
So if I look at the takeaway and I look at the club-based there, this gives me a sense of

00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:20,000
where the club-based is compared to the grip.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:25,000
And then if I compare it on the way down, that gives me a sense of what did I do with

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:27,000
my hands to square the club.

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:34,000
But that last parallel checkpoint is a really kind of easy way to see, do I need to adjust

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:39,000
if the ball's not flying straight or I'm struggling with low point because I'm not squaring

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:41,000
the club-based appropriately.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
That last parallel checkpoint looking at it both in the takeaway and comparing it to the

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:51,000
down swing is a great way to figure out should I change my grip or is it something

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:54,000
that's happening with my swing?

00:02:54,000 --> 00:02:59,000
Many times I've had lots of situations where golfers are slicing the ball and they say,

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:04,000
you know, should I strengthen my grip and we'll look at it on video and at this point

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:09,000
here the club-based is actually pointing more towards the ground and kind of like this.

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:14,000
But then they tend to have more of this hold-off kind of scoop-style release which it's

00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:16,000
more of a push-fade.

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:22,000
So by changing the grip that wouldn't really do the best long-term solution of correcting

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:25,000
what is causing the club-based open because we looked at the timeline.

00:03:25,000 --> 00:03:29,000
It wasn't open until the release happened.

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:36,000
So hopefully this video helps you figure out if you're struggling with your curve, be smart

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:41,000
about it and look at the timeline or look at the checkpoint so you can figure out how

00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:42,000
am I going to adjust my club-based?

00:03:42,000 --> 00:03:44,000
Am I going to do it with a little grip change?

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:48,000
Am I going to do it with different hand movements or am I going to do it by working on the

00:03:48,000 --> 00:03:51,000
motorbike or the merry-go-round and my pivot drill?

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:56,000
There's your three ways to really impact the club-based control and when you find your

00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:02,000
balance you will ultimately have smooth and consistent club-based control and you'll be

00:04:02,000 --> 00:04:05,000
able to shape your shots hopefully within a reasonable amount of curve.
