Turn From Behind - Hang Back Without Stalling

When you add axis tilt, it's common to stall the body rotation in an attempt to create side bend. This can be problematic for a lot of golfers since it moves the low point back and shifts the path more in-to-out. Learning to "turn from behind" can help balance the path when you learn to move your upper body behind your lower body.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
The drill is turned from behind. So turn from behind is a simple drill to help you

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
while you're working on your axis tilt. So what can frequently happen is

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
golfers who tend to kind of lunge and early straighten the arms need to work a

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:20,000
little bit more into this axis tilt movement where they get a little hip tilt

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:24,000
so that their upper body is tilted more away from the target. Especially

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:30,000
important with the three wood or the driver. So a lot of golfers who fall into

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:34,000
this pattern and start working on keeping the upper body a little bit more

00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:39,000
behind start having the bottom of swing move too far back hit fat shots hit

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:45,000
blocks hit hooks because they stay behind but they forget to continue turning.

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:49,000
So I use this little mantra of turn from behind which basically even though my

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:53,000
upper body is going to stay behind the golf ball my body is going to continue

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:59,000
turning through the release. So it ends up looking kind of something along the

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:04,000
lines like that. If I find that in trying to stay behind I don't turn

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:09,000
let's say early standard or I just continue side bending the bottom of my

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:14,000
swing clearly moves behind the golf ball and from down the line you'll see

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:23,000
that I tend to get too much into out where if I simply stay behind but then

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:28,000
turn so I have that good axis tilt relationship but I continue turning I

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:32,000
may be able to achieve a little bit more of a neutral path but with a shallow angle

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:37,000
of attack. So you can do this any either nine to three you can do this in

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:42,000
delivery and go or you can do this in pump style drills but the general concept is

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:46,000
pretty easy I'm working on continuing turning so I get into a good follow-through

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:51,000
position but I'm making sure that I do it with my upper body slightly behind the

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:54,000
lower body. This will be more important with the longer clubs so you may want

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:58,000
to practice with those as opposed to doing them with the shorter clubs like

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:04,000
seven iron and above. So I can do nine to three basically making sure that I

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:10,000
continue turning as I stay behind that's going to really help me with my solid

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:14,000
ness of contact as I'm working on my axis tilt and then I can use the feedback

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:17,000
of either the turf contact or the ball flight to figure out what I need to

00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:22,000
adjust as I do these drills. So turn from behind if I'm used to getting ahead

00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:26,000
and we'll kind of look like this so I start to get behind and it tends to bottom

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:29,000
out well behind so I have to make sure that even though I'm going to stay

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:34,000
behind I'm going to continue rotate which rotating which moves the bottom

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:41,000
swing far enough forward. I'll be able to use solidness of contact, low point

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
control and how well I'm getting into my follow-through position to make sure

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:48,000
that I'm continuing my turn even though I'm staying behind and have good

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:51,000
access tilt.
