Throw Ball In Transition

During transition, the arms are going to have a pattern of movement that helps prepare your body for the release. Very often, golfers learn ways to do it that are less athletic than is their potential. In this drill, you learn how to draw upon your throwing ability to make a more simplified transition.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
The Struill video is throw the ball in transition.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So I've got a ball here and I'm going to help you think of the motorcycle move or think

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:11,000
of squaring the club face in a slightly different way.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
But I have to give credit to one of our members John through an email interaction.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:24,000
We kind of, I helped him understand how this drill basically could help him use what he

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:28,000
already knew how to do, which was throw a baseball really well.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:35,000
So he was talking about a clinic that he attended and basically if one of the things

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:42,000
that they'll teach young pitchers is to keep the palm facing second base as long as you can

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:43,000
into the downswing of the throw.

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:48,000
So basically it would end up looking like something like this for much of the downswing

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:54,000
and then believe it or not, you end up working 180 degrees and pointing it down towards

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:55,000
the plate.

00:00:55,000 --> 00:01:00,000
I didn't do a whole lot of baseball so that was a cool little news to me but I did play

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:07,000
a P.E. football flag football but I was the quarterback so I had a pretty good throwing

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:13,000
mechanic and I always felt like it kind of worked down like so palms both palms face

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:16,000
the way before it would go into delivery.

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:20,000
It wouldn't just go straight back saying facing the target like I was doing a shot

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:21,000
put.

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:24,000
Well the same thing is going to happen in golf and that's part of the reason why pitchers

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:27,000
and quarterbacks end up being pretty good golfers.

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:30,000
So what I'm going to do here is we're going to imagine this is my baseball, this is the

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:33,000
smallest baseball we have here in this little studio.

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:37,000
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go up to the top of the swing and then I'm going

00:01:37,000 --> 00:01:42,000
to imagine second base is that way and what I'm going to do is as I come down I'm going

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:48,000
to try to get my palm, my right palm facing directly away from the target.

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:53,000
So I'm going to go from here to palm facing away from the target just like so.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:58,000
Now I could very easily do this by doing the motorcycle move or doing it with the lead

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:02,000
wrist but for a lot of athletes it's going to feel more comfortable to do with the trail

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:04,000
of wrist.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:08,000
So then once you've done that and kind of done it enough reps that you've gotten a feel

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:14,000
of it so maybe ten times just kind of getting a feel of that movement during transition.

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:18,000
What you're going to do is you're going to go to the top of the swing and then as you start

00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:23,000
down you're basically going to try and point that palm away from you but also slightly

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:24,000
down just like so.

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:29,000
So if I was looking at where my fingers were pointing I wouldn't want them pointing straight

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:30,000
up in the sky.

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:34,000
I would want them pointing at an angle slightly down towards the ground like that.

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:38,000
So I'm going to go up to the top, you're going to point it away just like so.

00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:42,000
And you'll see that that gets the club face already starting to square so that I can be

00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:47,000
a little bit more aggressive and have my hands far enough ahead to have the bottom of my

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:50,000
swing pretty far forward and get good compression on the golf ball.
