Swing Analysis - Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson is one of, if not the, best driver of the golf ball in the last few years. He has an impressive combination of both distance and accuracy. Three keys that he uses to enable such driving ability are powering his swing with his total body, shallowing his arms in transition, and closing the club face to the path. Adding those movements to your own swing can help tremendously if you want to be a more consistent driver of the golf ball.

00:00:00.030 --> 00:00:02.820
in this analysis video we're going to

00:00:02.820 --> 00:00:04.230
take a look at the swing of Dustin

00:00:04.230 --> 00:00:06.779
Johnson now Dustin Johnson is a driving

00:00:06.779 --> 00:00:09.269
machine and put on an amazing display

00:00:09.269 --> 00:00:11.910
this year at the US Open winning his

00:00:11.910 --> 00:00:14.670
first major last year at chambers Bay he

00:00:14.670 --> 00:00:17.190
put on an equally impressive round in

00:00:17.190 --> 00:00:19.080
terms of ball striking and his putter

00:00:19.080 --> 00:00:20.910
just led him down a little bit this year

00:00:20.910 --> 00:00:23.189
he made enough quality putts to really

00:00:23.189 --> 00:00:25.710
capitalize on his brilliant ball

00:00:25.710 --> 00:00:27.449
striking in this video we're going to

00:00:27.449 --> 00:00:29.730
take a look at a few things that he does

00:00:29.730 --> 00:00:32.279
in the downswing then make him such an

00:00:32.279 --> 00:00:34.140
exceptional driver of the golf ball in

00:00:34.140 --> 00:00:36.660
ways that you can emulate some of those

00:00:36.660 --> 00:00:38.520
key movements and put them in your own

00:00:38.520 --> 00:00:42.660
swing everyone who plays golf loves to

00:00:42.660 --> 00:00:44.700
drive the ball far in straight Dustin

00:00:44.700 --> 00:00:47.940
Johnson is able to capitalize on his

00:00:47.940 --> 00:00:49.559
physical abilities and drive the ball

00:00:49.559 --> 00:00:52.610
better than anyone in the modern game

00:00:52.610 --> 00:00:55.079
this year at the US Open he was

00:00:55.079 --> 00:00:57.239
averaging about 20 yards further than

00:00:57.239 --> 00:01:00.570
everybody else in the field yet he hit a

00:01:00.570 --> 00:01:03.059
staggeringly high percentage of fairways

00:01:03.059 --> 00:01:05.850
given how far he hits the golf ball so

00:01:05.850 --> 00:01:07.530
what does Dustin do that make him such a

00:01:07.530 --> 00:01:10.110
great driver of the golf ball we're

00:01:10.110 --> 00:01:11.790
gonna talk about three things that he

00:01:11.790 --> 00:01:13.770
does he's going to power the swing

00:01:13.770 --> 00:01:16.170
primarily from his body he's going to

00:01:16.170 --> 00:01:18.930
close the club face and he's going to

00:01:18.930 --> 00:01:21.990
shallow his arms in transition after we

00:01:21.990 --> 00:01:23.610
take a look at Dustin's swing we're

00:01:23.610 --> 00:01:25.439
going to compare him to someone who's

00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:27.780
more of an arm swinger so that you can

00:01:27.780 --> 00:01:29.400
see some of the differences and how they

00:01:29.400 --> 00:01:32.790
might apply to your game so if we look

00:01:32.790 --> 00:01:35.549
at Dustin's backswing we can see that he

00:01:35.549 --> 00:01:38.939
gets into a really good athletic

00:01:38.939 --> 00:01:40.409
position up at the top of the swing you

00:01:40.409 --> 00:01:42.990
can see that for all intensive purposes

00:01:42.990 --> 00:01:45.210
he's kind of maintained his spine angle

00:01:45.210 --> 00:01:48.210
or he's rotated the large muscles as

00:01:48.210 --> 00:01:51.450
he's created this backswing pivot so

00:01:51.450 --> 00:01:54.240
he's loaded the muscles in his core his

00:01:54.240 --> 00:01:57.210
hips and his trunk so that he can use

00:01:57.210 --> 00:01:59.009
those muscles to start the downswing

00:01:59.009 --> 00:02:01.469
basically his arms are going to be a lot

00:02:01.469 --> 00:02:04.049
more passive during the downswing or

00:02:04.049 --> 00:02:05.520
during the early part of the downswing

00:02:05.520 --> 00:02:07.259
while his body is responsible for

00:02:07.259 --> 00:02:09.460
creating the initial

00:02:09.460 --> 00:02:11.340
the rust or the initial amount of speed

00:02:11.340 --> 00:02:13.960
so as he starts into his downswing

00:02:13.960 --> 00:02:16.900
you'll see that while his he has

00:02:16.900 --> 00:02:18.550
tremendous sequencing you're going to

00:02:18.550 --> 00:02:20.620
see that his lower body tends to

00:02:20.620 --> 00:02:22.300
initiate the downswing followed by his

00:02:22.300 --> 00:02:24.700
core followed by his trunk and then you

00:02:24.700 --> 00:02:27.970
won't see his arms really extend until

00:02:27.970 --> 00:02:30.760
he gets very close to making contact

00:02:30.760 --> 00:02:33.070
with the golf ball this will make a

00:02:33.070 --> 00:02:34.480
little bit more sense when we take a

00:02:34.480 --> 00:02:38.860
look at John Senden and compare the arm

00:02:38.860 --> 00:02:40.870
swing of John Senden to the body swing

00:02:40.870 --> 00:02:41.980
of Dustin Johnson

00:02:41.980 --> 00:02:45.670
so one of the key movements to this body

00:02:45.670 --> 00:02:49.450
swing is the arm shallowing component

00:02:49.450 --> 00:02:51.970
and here's what I mean by the arm

00:02:51.970 --> 00:02:54.760
xiaolin component so at this point in a

00:02:54.760 --> 00:02:56.110
swing we're just going to make a little

00:02:56.110 --> 00:02:57.940
note of where his posture is and you can

00:02:57.940 --> 00:03:00.700
see that his arms or his elbows if we

00:03:00.700 --> 00:03:02.020
were to kind of connect the bottom of

00:03:02.020 --> 00:03:05.410
those are at a slight angle compared to

00:03:05.410 --> 00:03:09.100
his spine angle or his posture now what

00:03:09.100 --> 00:03:11.620
we'll see is as he goes into the

00:03:11.620 --> 00:03:13.990
downswing you'll see that he bends

00:03:13.990 --> 00:03:15.760
forward and actually steepens

00:03:15.760 --> 00:03:17.890
his spine angle how much you can't

00:03:17.890 --> 00:03:20.530
really tell by a 2d video but you can

00:03:20.530 --> 00:03:24.070
see that he has steep in his his spine

00:03:24.070 --> 00:03:25.810
angle or his upper body's bent more

00:03:25.810 --> 00:03:28.150
forward towards the ground now at the

00:03:28.150 --> 00:03:31.420
same time you can see that his arms have

00:03:31.420 --> 00:03:34.240
slightly flattened so the right elbow is

00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:36.130
slightly lower than where it was at this

00:03:36.130 --> 00:03:40.930
point in the in the backswing so he's

00:03:40.930 --> 00:03:42.880
done this rotational arm shallowing

00:03:42.880 --> 00:03:44.500
movement which allows for his upper body

00:03:44.500 --> 00:03:46.870
to flex closer to the ground so that you

00:03:46.870 --> 00:03:50.220
can continue rotating through the shot

00:03:50.220 --> 00:03:53.080
that key component of the upper body

00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:55.930
flexing and the arm shallowing allows

00:03:55.930 --> 00:03:58.660
his body to rotate so that when he gets

00:03:58.660 --> 00:04:01.120
the impact you can see that his body is

00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:04.600
in that tremendous position facing more

00:04:04.600 --> 00:04:06.670
out towards the target and less at the

00:04:06.670 --> 00:04:08.920
golf ball the more that the body is

00:04:08.920 --> 00:04:10.990
facing out towards the target and less

00:04:10.990 --> 00:04:12.940
of the golf ball you'll tend to see more

00:04:12.940 --> 00:04:15.340
of this rotation side Bend you'll tend

00:04:15.340 --> 00:04:17.620
to see that the right elbow or sorry the

00:04:17.620 --> 00:04:20.049
right shoulder is going to be closer to

00:04:20.049 --> 00:04:21.380
the golf ball and

00:04:21.380 --> 00:04:23.270
as a result you'll see that the right

00:04:23.270 --> 00:04:26.440
elbow is going to have some flex in it

00:04:26.440 --> 00:04:29.900
so that body powering the swing is going

00:04:29.900 --> 00:04:31.850
to allow that right arm there really

00:04:31.850 --> 00:04:34.700
straighten through the shot instead of

00:04:34.700 --> 00:04:37.520
approaching into the shot that allows

00:04:37.520 --> 00:04:40.430
him to have a really good wide arc width

00:04:40.430 --> 00:04:42.770
after the golf ball which which I've

00:04:42.770 --> 00:04:45.590
seen with my research looking at 3d

00:04:45.590 --> 00:04:47.570
graphs to have a high correlation

00:04:47.570 --> 00:04:50.750
between driving consistency now the

00:04:50.750 --> 00:04:53.870
other piece is since he's rotating his

00:04:53.870 --> 00:04:56.650
body so much that's going to create

00:04:56.650 --> 00:04:59.930
impact happening more behind his body or

00:04:59.930 --> 00:05:01.790
towards the right half of his body as a

00:05:01.790 --> 00:05:04.610
result of the club not catching up in

00:05:04.610 --> 00:05:07.610
front of his body until after impact he

00:05:07.610 --> 00:05:10.130
has to have the lead wrist flexed he has

00:05:10.130 --> 00:05:13.400
to have the clubface rotated more closed

00:05:13.400 --> 00:05:16.430
than it was at setup that's what allows

00:05:16.430 --> 00:05:19.100
the clubface to point in the general

00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:22.220
direction of the target even though the

00:05:22.220 --> 00:05:24.980
club is well behind his body as it

00:05:24.980 --> 00:05:27.350
swings around the circle the club being

00:05:27.350 --> 00:05:29.000
well behind his body allows it to

00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:33.020
continue in a wider position through the

00:05:33.020 --> 00:05:35.000
follow-through which again helps with

00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:37.490
some of this flat spot as well as

00:05:37.490 --> 00:05:40.760
consistency that he's able to produce

00:05:40.760 --> 00:05:43.370
with his both paths as well as angle of

00:05:43.370 --> 00:05:48.080
attack so now we understand that having

00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:51.110
this great sequencing having the arm

00:05:51.110 --> 00:05:54.770
shallow and having the club or the lead

00:05:54.770 --> 00:05:55.250
wrist

00:05:55.250 --> 00:05:57.920
what more flexed during the downswing

00:05:57.920 --> 00:06:00.860
that was it setup those are all good

00:06:00.860 --> 00:06:04.700
keys to having a body driven athletic

00:06:04.700 --> 00:06:07.040
movement just like Dustin Johnson now if

00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:09.110
you decide that you don't want to have

00:06:09.110 --> 00:06:11.450
this athletic body driven movement then

00:06:11.450 --> 00:06:12.890
you want to swing more like a John

00:06:12.890 --> 00:06:14.810
Senden so what we'll do now is we're

00:06:14.810 --> 00:06:16.850
going to compare the body swing of

00:06:16.850 --> 00:06:19.190
Dustin Johnson to the arm swing of dust

00:06:19.190 --> 00:06:22.820
of John Senden so that you can see how

00:06:22.820 --> 00:06:24.920
these pieces fit together and which ones

00:06:24.920 --> 00:06:28.190
might apply most to your own swing so if

00:06:28.190 --> 00:06:29.780
you're going to be more of an arm

00:06:29.780 --> 00:06:32.150
swinger you will tend to see a couple

00:06:32.150 --> 00:06:34.830
common characteristics a

00:06:34.830 --> 00:06:36.810
you're going to see the height that they

00:06:36.810 --> 00:06:39.690
set at setup stay a little bit more

00:06:39.690 --> 00:06:41.879
consistent and more stable it's one of

00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:43.860
the things that kind of drives me crazy

00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:45.960
is when you hear the announcers on TV

00:06:45.960 --> 00:06:48.990
talk about how a lot of tiger shots a

00:06:48.990 --> 00:06:50.430
lot of the bad shots were caused by the

00:06:50.430 --> 00:06:52.710
upper-body dropping but they fail to

00:06:52.710 --> 00:06:55.409
talk about how Dustin Johnson and Rory

00:06:55.409 --> 00:06:56.819
McIlroy and some of them

00:06:56.819 --> 00:06:58.979
Adam Scott some of the more amazing

00:06:58.979 --> 00:07:01.919
drivers the golf ball in our era have

00:07:01.919 --> 00:07:04.860
significant upper body drops there's if

00:07:04.860 --> 00:07:10.169
we were to place the club at impact and

00:07:10.169 --> 00:07:11.909
just kind of lock it in a vise so that

00:07:11.909 --> 00:07:14.280
it's a certain distance away you can see

00:07:14.280 --> 00:07:17.729
that both of these two golfers roughly

00:07:17.729 --> 00:07:21.569
have the club in a similar somewhat

00:07:21.569 --> 00:07:23.370
position but their bodies are in totally

00:07:23.370 --> 00:07:25.349
different positions the more that I'm

00:07:25.349 --> 00:07:27.930
going to rotate my body towards the

00:07:27.930 --> 00:07:30.509
target the more that I'm going to tend

00:07:30.509 --> 00:07:32.580
to side Bend and so as this right

00:07:32.580 --> 00:07:34.800
shoulder gets more down towards the golf

00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:37.650
ball you'll see that the right elbow is

00:07:37.650 --> 00:07:40.169
going to externally rotate and Bend in

00:07:40.169 --> 00:07:42.750
order to accommodate for that distance

00:07:42.750 --> 00:07:45.509
the more that your head stays the same

00:07:45.509 --> 00:07:46.710
height the more that your upper body

00:07:46.710 --> 00:07:49.469
backs away you're going to tend to see

00:07:49.469 --> 00:07:51.539
that right arm straightening to

00:07:51.539 --> 00:07:53.819
accommodate the increased distance

00:07:53.819 --> 00:07:55.710
between the shoulder and the golf ball

00:07:55.710 --> 00:07:57.599
when the shoulder is closer to the golf

00:07:57.599 --> 00:07:59.580
ball as Dustin is demonstrating here

00:07:59.580 --> 00:08:01.770
you'll see him be able to extend his

00:08:01.770 --> 00:08:02.909
arms on the way through

00:08:02.909 --> 00:08:05.009
we're with someone like John Senden

00:08:05.009 --> 00:08:06.900
you'll see the arms are pretty much

00:08:06.900 --> 00:08:10.139
straight just after impact and then as a

00:08:10.139 --> 00:08:12.900
result you'll see the club pass and the

00:08:12.900 --> 00:08:14.400
body just kind of support the movement

00:08:14.400 --> 00:08:16.949
oh if you're going to be more of an arm

00:08:16.949 --> 00:08:19.289
driven swing or have more of an arm

00:08:19.289 --> 00:08:21.150
driven swing then you really want to

00:08:21.150 --> 00:08:23.580
swing easy and within yourself or else

00:08:23.580 --> 00:08:24.690
you're going to tend to have face

00:08:24.690 --> 00:08:28.560
control issues and tend to hit shots

00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:31.830
that start well off line the good thing

00:08:31.830 --> 00:08:33.779
about the body driven swing that we see

00:08:33.779 --> 00:08:35.820
with Dustin Johnson or Rory McIlroy or

00:08:35.820 --> 00:08:38.130
Adam Scott is that they are able to

00:08:38.130 --> 00:08:41.339
swing harder while still controlling

00:08:41.339 --> 00:08:43.800
their path and face to path relationship

00:08:43.800 --> 00:08:46.410
so if you're going to go more of this

00:08:46.410 --> 00:08:48.240
arm swing where

00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:51.029
you're using your arms to power and

00:08:51.029 --> 00:08:53.100
create the speed from the top you're

00:08:53.100 --> 00:08:55.110
going to tend to see less body rotation

00:08:55.110 --> 00:08:56.880
and impact you're going to tend to see

00:08:56.880 --> 00:08:59.490
less head drop and you're going to tend

00:08:59.490 --> 00:09:02.760
to see a straighter arm at impact so the

00:09:02.760 --> 00:09:05.730
less head drop more arm driven straight

00:09:05.730 --> 00:09:08.550
arm at impact tends to give you a little

00:09:08.550 --> 00:09:11.070
bit more difficulty creating a real long

00:09:11.070 --> 00:09:12.959
flat spot at the bottom which does

00:09:12.959 --> 00:09:15.029
produce some consistency issues with the

00:09:15.029 --> 00:09:17.339
driver especially if you err on swinging

00:09:17.339 --> 00:09:18.959
harder so if you're going to swing hard

00:09:18.959 --> 00:09:20.700
you want to be more like Dustin Dustin

00:09:20.700 --> 00:09:23.330
Johnson if you're ok swinging easy

00:09:23.330 --> 00:09:26.190
possibly playing a shorter club you'll

00:09:26.190 --> 00:09:29.100
do you'll probably do better and fit

00:09:29.100 --> 00:09:31.080
better into more of a John Senden model

00:09:31.080 --> 00:09:33.920
now the neat thing is that it's not a

00:09:33.920 --> 00:09:36.990
one-to-one it's more of a spectrum so if

00:09:36.990 --> 00:09:39.060
you are in this John Senden model where

00:09:39.060 --> 00:09:41.760
you're more of an arm swinger the more

00:09:41.760 --> 00:09:43.290
that you can relax your arms in

00:09:43.290 --> 00:09:45.330
transition power it more with your body

00:09:45.330 --> 00:09:47.640
and get closer towards this Dustin

00:09:47.640 --> 00:09:50.100
Johnson move in general the more

00:09:50.100 --> 00:09:51.959
consistent your ball striking is going

00:09:51.959 --> 00:09:53.940
to become especially with the longer

00:09:53.940 --> 00:09:57.029
clubs like driver and 3-wood so if

00:09:57.029 --> 00:09:58.920
you're not quite sure about these pieces

00:09:58.920 --> 00:10:01.050
and how they fit you're welcome to
