Swing Analysis - Bubba Watson

Bubba is a long hitter who loves to shape the ball. While he appears to use a lot of hand action to shape the ball, see how most of the "hand action" is actually in the follow through. Through the downswing and release, he has a very classic swing. It's no suprise that he is a consistent ball elite ball striker given the quality of his release.

00:00:00.060 --> 00:00:02.460
in this analysis video we're gonna take

00:00:02.460 --> 00:00:04.890
a look at Bubba Watson but Watson is a

00:00:04.890 --> 00:00:06.750
lefty and one of the longest hitters on

00:00:06.750 --> 00:00:08.849
tour I'm gonna show you that he's got

00:00:08.849 --> 00:00:11.160
some classic movements to his swing but

00:00:11.160 --> 00:00:12.570
a few things that are a little bit

00:00:12.570 --> 00:00:14.309
unorthodox that would give him some of

00:00:14.309 --> 00:00:17.670
his unique looks so Bubba Watson is

00:00:17.670 --> 00:00:20.460
known for shaping pretty much every shot

00:00:20.460 --> 00:00:22.230
and hitting the ball a long way kind of

00:00:22.230 --> 00:00:24.269
playing with reckless abandon I'm gonna

00:00:24.269 --> 00:00:26.910
show you how he has a lot of classic

00:00:26.910 --> 00:00:28.590
characteristics to his swing a lot of

00:00:28.590 --> 00:00:30.779
things that I like and that we see in

00:00:30.779 --> 00:00:34.440
the the stock tour swing model and we're

00:00:34.440 --> 00:00:36.059
gonna go over a few of the things that

00:00:36.059 --> 00:00:38.309
give him kind of some uniqueness to his

00:00:38.309 --> 00:00:40.710
swing especially in the bracing in the

00:00:40.710 --> 00:00:43.620
follow-through so if we if we look at

00:00:43.620 --> 00:00:45.510
his backswing you'll see a fairly

00:00:45.510 --> 00:00:48.510
classic kind of one-piece takeaway from

00:00:48.510 --> 00:00:49.890
the down line you'll just see that

00:00:49.890 --> 00:00:52.980
there's one of his kind of trademark

00:00:52.980 --> 00:00:54.780
moves is he'll you'll set up with a

00:00:54.780 --> 00:00:57.629
little bit more of an open stance but

00:00:57.629 --> 00:00:59.750
that doesn't take away from his

00:00:59.750 --> 00:01:04.519
one-piece takeaway so it's largely a big

00:01:04.519 --> 00:01:07.200
big body movement muscles of the core

00:01:07.200 --> 00:01:09.930
hips and trunk that are moving the club

00:01:09.930 --> 00:01:12.930
away but he does tend to use a little

00:01:12.930 --> 00:01:15.030
bit more of the arm lift which gives the

00:01:15.030 --> 00:01:16.950
club the appearance of going a little

00:01:16.950 --> 00:01:19.020
bit more outside the line not that that

00:01:19.020 --> 00:01:22.170
really matters what that does is that

00:01:22.170 --> 00:01:24.540
helps create a little bit more of this

00:01:24.540 --> 00:01:26.820
vertical arm movement which he's then

00:01:26.820 --> 00:01:29.159
going to shallow out very nicely in

00:01:29.159 --> 00:01:32.130
transition so at the top of the swing

00:01:32.130 --> 00:01:34.829
you'll see that since distance is a

00:01:34.829 --> 00:01:37.320
priority of his you'll see a big full

00:01:37.320 --> 00:01:39.990
turn so you'll see lots of movement

00:01:39.990 --> 00:01:42.450
happening at the the ankle they need the

00:01:42.450 --> 00:01:44.939
hip the ribcage the shoulders all the

00:01:44.939 --> 00:01:47.100
way up through the chain but you'll see

00:01:47.100 --> 00:01:49.409
that he did even he did a great job of

00:01:49.409 --> 00:01:51.750
keeping his arms someone out in front of

00:01:51.750 --> 00:01:53.700
him even though he's had a ton of lift

00:01:53.700 --> 00:01:57.689
you can see that the trail elbow hasn't

00:01:57.689 --> 00:02:00.540
worked its way behind his body into a

00:02:00.540 --> 00:02:03.750
stuck position you can see if his trail

00:02:03.750 --> 00:02:05.610
elbow had worked behind his body we'd be

00:02:05.610 --> 00:02:07.259
able to see it kind of in this position

00:02:07.259 --> 00:02:09.780
over here so because his arms are still

00:02:09.780 --> 00:02:11.430
in an okay position even though he has

00:02:11.430 --> 00:02:13.360
this long swing

00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:15.490
you'll see that his first movement with

00:02:15.490 --> 00:02:18.130
his arms during transition is to really

00:02:18.130 --> 00:02:20.580
shallow out the club and get the the

00:02:20.580 --> 00:02:24.670
back of the left wrist roughly parallel

00:02:24.670 --> 00:02:27.250
to his shoulders or perpendicular to his

00:02:27.250 --> 00:02:29.140
spine so he has a really good job of

00:02:29.140 --> 00:02:31.420
shallowing out from the arms you'll also

00:02:31.420 --> 00:02:33.310
see that he does a tremendous job of

00:02:33.310 --> 00:02:37.120
sequencing the lower body as his upper

00:02:37.120 --> 00:02:39.459
body drops down he's kind of compressing

00:02:39.459 --> 00:02:40.810
against the ground to give him something

00:02:40.810 --> 00:02:43.420
to really push with you can see that his

00:02:43.420 --> 00:02:46.510
lower body opens up very very nicely I

00:02:46.510 --> 00:02:49.510
use the the the barrier of kind of by

00:02:49.510 --> 00:02:51.790
about the time the lead arm is parallel

00:02:51.790 --> 00:02:54.430
to the ground if you're if you're going

00:02:54.430 --> 00:02:55.900
for power you want to have your hips

00:02:55.900 --> 00:02:57.700
relatively square that's showing that

00:02:57.700 --> 00:03:00.280
you've started this swing more with the

00:03:00.280 --> 00:03:03.040
lower body than with the upper body here

00:03:03.040 --> 00:03:05.770
you can see he's he gets his hips back

00:03:05.770 --> 00:03:08.830
to square when that left arm or when his

00:03:08.830 --> 00:03:11.260
right arm is still well above parallel

00:03:11.260 --> 00:03:14.080
so kind of in the same position with

00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:16.330
these two swings so it's a tremendous

00:03:16.330 --> 00:03:18.070
job of sequencing the body and he's got

00:03:18.070 --> 00:03:20.170
lots and lots of flexibility which

00:03:20.170 --> 00:03:23.590
allows him to then have this kind of

00:03:23.590 --> 00:03:26.049
exaggerated look but now as he

00:03:26.049 --> 00:03:28.330
approaches the livery position he's

00:03:28.330 --> 00:03:30.130
continuing to power it with his body

00:03:30.130 --> 00:03:32.110
he's continuing to shallow it with the

00:03:32.110 --> 00:03:35.739
arms and he's squaring the clubface very

00:03:35.739 --> 00:03:39.310
nicely so when he's in this delivery

00:03:39.310 --> 00:03:41.350
position you'll see a pretty good

00:03:41.350 --> 00:03:43.209
variety of where he likes to have the

00:03:43.209 --> 00:03:47.049
club the shaft plane well where the club

00:03:47.049 --> 00:03:49.330
is where the club head is in relation to

00:03:49.330 --> 00:03:52.630
his hands all those affect his face to

00:03:52.630 --> 00:03:54.280
path and he's really good at moving

00:03:54.280 --> 00:03:56.650
around the face that path to have larger

00:03:56.650 --> 00:03:59.380
amounts of curves so from the face on

00:03:59.380 --> 00:04:01.900
view you'll see that transition move he

00:04:01.900 --> 00:04:03.720
does a really good job of getting his

00:04:03.720 --> 00:04:06.850
lower body to start and then he does a

00:04:06.850 --> 00:04:09.519
great job of setting up for his bracing

00:04:09.519 --> 00:04:12.880
so this has been largely a body pull on

00:04:12.880 --> 00:04:14.620
his arms and then once he gets to right

00:04:14.620 --> 00:04:16.479
about here we're now gonna start the

00:04:16.479 --> 00:04:18.729
release and so what you'll what you'll

00:04:18.729 --> 00:04:20.829
see is he does a great job of pushing

00:04:20.829 --> 00:04:23.200
through that lead leg to kind of create

00:04:23.200 --> 00:04:24.700
this little chain reaction that's going

00:04:24.700 --> 00:04:25.740
to cause the

00:04:25.740 --> 00:04:28.199
arms in the club too then want to extend

00:04:28.199 --> 00:04:30.780
as he goes into a release but he's done

00:04:30.780 --> 00:04:32.819
such a beautiful job of positioning his

00:04:32.819 --> 00:04:35.580
body that his arms are able to extend

00:04:35.580 --> 00:04:37.349
freely and he gets in this really

00:04:37.349 --> 00:04:41.699
classic looking bracing position now one

00:04:41.699 --> 00:04:43.889
of the unique things that you'll tend to

00:04:43.889 --> 00:04:47.729
see is that movement of his lower body

00:04:47.729 --> 00:04:50.750
or his feet through the through impact

00:04:50.750 --> 00:04:53.250
you'll you'll tend to see this vertical

00:04:53.250 --> 00:04:55.919
movement with a lot of golfers who hit

00:04:55.919 --> 00:04:57.449
the ball a long way compared to their

00:04:57.449 --> 00:04:59.729
body weight so skinnier golfers are

00:04:59.729 --> 00:05:01.530
gonna tend to have to rely on this

00:05:01.530 --> 00:05:04.949
pushing vertically against the ground in

00:05:04.949 --> 00:05:06.360
order to create enough friction to

00:05:06.360 --> 00:05:08.630
create enough rotational speed

00:05:08.630 --> 00:05:13.500
now he's shallowing his sequencing his

00:05:13.500 --> 00:05:15.509
release all that stuff looks very very

00:05:15.509 --> 00:05:18.150
classic one of the things that gives

00:05:18.150 --> 00:05:21.240
Bubba some of his trademark uniqueness

00:05:21.240 --> 00:05:23.539
and kind of flair is his follow-through

00:05:23.539 --> 00:05:26.250
movements and his his finished position

00:05:26.250 --> 00:05:29.340
so once he gets through this bracing

00:05:29.340 --> 00:05:30.870
into his follow-through position right

00:05:30.870 --> 00:05:32.940
about here what a lot of golfers would

00:05:32.940 --> 00:05:35.610
do is they would continue rotating their

00:05:35.610 --> 00:05:38.340
upper and lower body while the arms kind

00:05:38.340 --> 00:05:40.979
of were the speed of the club was being

00:05:40.979 --> 00:05:42.780
absorbed more by the body instead of the

00:05:42.780 --> 00:05:45.630
arms Bubba is a little bit unique in

00:05:45.630 --> 00:05:49.169
that he tends to freeze his body and

00:05:49.169 --> 00:05:51.690
absorb more of the speed in his arms and

00:05:51.690 --> 00:05:54.479
wrists through the movement there and

00:05:54.479 --> 00:05:57.080
then his body just kind of casually

00:05:57.080 --> 00:05:59.520
rides that momentum of the arms and the

00:05:59.520 --> 00:06:02.009
club up to the finish so instead of

00:06:02.009 --> 00:06:04.680
using more of his hips and his trunk to

00:06:04.680 --> 00:06:08.009
absorb the speed you can see him hinging

00:06:08.009 --> 00:06:09.479
this knee a little bit which is usually

00:06:09.479 --> 00:06:11.699
coming from that hip flexor and you can

00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:16.020
see his upper body kind of bracing and

00:06:16.020 --> 00:06:17.490
moving back that way so instead of

00:06:17.490 --> 00:06:19.639
absorbing it with bracing through the

00:06:19.639 --> 00:06:22.080
hips and the trunk he's absorbing it

00:06:22.080 --> 00:06:25.080
with more of his quads his knee and more

00:06:25.080 --> 00:06:28.169
of his shoulders so it gives a little

00:06:28.169 --> 00:06:31.289
bit of uniqueness to his the way the

00:06:31.289 --> 00:06:34.800
club exits because right around here

00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:37.860
everything is pretty classic if his body

00:06:37.860 --> 00:06:38.729
just can't

00:06:38.729 --> 00:06:41.699
rotating then it would look very much

00:06:41.699 --> 00:06:45.180
like a Jason day or an Adam Scott but

00:06:45.180 --> 00:06:47.009
what happens is because his body hasn't

00:06:47.009 --> 00:06:49.680
really continued rotating the wrist

00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:51.870
helped the club past the body very very

00:06:51.870 --> 00:06:54.120
quickly and then because the body hasn't

00:06:54.120 --> 00:06:56.009
continued rotating the arms now start

00:06:56.009 --> 00:06:58.710
moving in a much more vertical almost

00:06:58.710 --> 00:07:01.580
hold off look to his follow-through so

00:07:01.580 --> 00:07:04.499
as a fun comparison I flipped Adam Scott

00:07:04.499 --> 00:07:06.419
because normally when they're comparing

00:07:06.419 --> 00:07:08.699
Bubba or Phil for the rabies they flip

00:07:08.699 --> 00:07:11.849
Bubba or Phil to the radiation but I

00:07:11.849 --> 00:07:13.649
want you to take a look and see a lot of

00:07:13.649 --> 00:07:17.009
the similarities so we've got a fairly

00:07:17.009 --> 00:07:19.559
similar amount of body rotation you've

00:07:19.559 --> 00:07:21.779
got really good arm extension slightly

00:07:21.779 --> 00:07:24.029
different positions of the shaft and

00:07:24.029 --> 00:07:26.069
clubface but overall a lot of

00:07:26.069 --> 00:07:27.930
similarities there so now what you'll

00:07:27.930 --> 00:07:30.599
see is as the club passes his body he's

00:07:30.599 --> 00:07:33.300
now his primary goal is no longer

00:07:33.300 --> 00:07:35.189
controlling the path of the club it's

00:07:35.189 --> 00:07:37.319
now safely absorbing the speed of the

00:07:37.319 --> 00:07:39.389
swing and so what you'll see is it's

00:07:39.389 --> 00:07:42.479
largely the risks that are absorbing the

00:07:42.479 --> 00:07:45.360
speed of swing and then his body just

00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:48.180
kind of stays facing towards the fairway

00:07:48.180 --> 00:07:50.610
like so so if we take it to about the

00:07:50.610 --> 00:07:53.669
same position where the hands are about

00:07:53.669 --> 00:07:55.889
the same position what you'll see is

00:07:55.889 --> 00:07:58.409
that Adam Scott has turned his body a

00:07:58.409 --> 00:08:01.080
good twenty or thirty degrees and that's

00:08:01.080 --> 00:08:02.999
where he's absorbing the speed of the

00:08:02.999 --> 00:08:05.909
swing as opposed to Bubba doing it

00:08:05.909 --> 00:08:08.729
mostly in the arms of the club it'll

00:08:08.729 --> 00:08:10.649
look a little bit more exaggerated when

00:08:10.649 --> 00:08:13.559
we look from face on so now looking at

00:08:13.559 --> 00:08:15.689
Jason day we can compare some of the

00:08:15.689 --> 00:08:18.509
things from the face on so you'll see

00:08:18.509 --> 00:08:21.749
that even though they had very different

00:08:21.749 --> 00:08:23.370
looking back swing loads we're getting

00:08:23.370 --> 00:08:27.539
into a similar unloading pattern as we

00:08:27.539 --> 00:08:31.050
move Bubba through those similar

00:08:31.050 --> 00:08:33.740
positions

00:08:35.310 --> 00:08:37.650
you'll see that again compared to what

00:08:37.650 --> 00:08:40.380
we had with Adam Scott not a dramatic

00:08:40.380 --> 00:08:42.000
difference he's a little bit further

00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:43.740
behind so he's bracing slightly

00:08:43.740 --> 00:08:46.110
differently what we'll see now is as the

00:08:46.110 --> 00:08:47.880
club passes

00:08:47.880 --> 00:08:51.990
Jason's midline he's absorbing it more

00:08:51.990 --> 00:08:54.960
with body rotation and trunk rotation so

00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:56.940
you can see that it's mostly the hips

00:08:56.940 --> 00:08:58.320
and the shoulders there's not a lot

00:08:58.320 --> 00:09:01.050
going on there with the wrists so now if

00:09:01.050 --> 00:09:03.690
we take Bubba here he could be doing the

00:09:03.690 --> 00:09:06.570
same thing but what ends up happening is

00:09:06.570 --> 00:09:08.130
once he gets through the hands passing

00:09:08.130 --> 00:09:11.010
the midline now most of the absorption

00:09:11.010 --> 00:09:13.520
is gonna happen in the wrists and

00:09:13.520 --> 00:09:15.900
vertical movement of the knees as

00:09:15.900 --> 00:09:19.020
opposed to continuing rotating his trunk

00:09:19.020 --> 00:09:21.870
and core so this is one of the cases

00:09:21.870 --> 00:09:24.779
where the Flair and the uniqueness to

00:09:24.779 --> 00:09:26.760
his swing is kind of at a point where I

00:09:26.760 --> 00:09:29.240
think it's non-critical unless it was

00:09:29.240 --> 00:09:31.380
unless he was battling some type of

00:09:31.380 --> 00:09:33.570
injury either in that lead knee or

00:09:33.570 --> 00:09:35.730
potentially in the neck shoulder or

00:09:35.730 --> 00:09:39.060
elbow area I wouldn't see any reason

00:09:39.060 --> 00:09:40.260
that you'd have to change it because

00:09:40.260 --> 00:09:43.950
he's having great success with the face

00:09:43.950 --> 00:09:45.990
to path relationships he's having great

00:09:45.990 --> 00:09:47.940
success with sequencing and powering the

00:09:47.940 --> 00:09:49.620
swing and gets into a really good

00:09:49.620 --> 00:09:51.089
bracing strategy it's just that

00:09:51.089 --> 00:09:55.020
absorbing of the speed after all the key

00:09:55.020 --> 00:09:58.320
movements of the swing are done so if

00:09:58.320 --> 00:09:59.880
you want to understand which movements

00:09:59.880 --> 00:10:01.440
of your swing are critical and which

00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:03.660
movements are just your style head over

00:10:05.339 --> 00:10:07.410
membership options in the membership

00:10:07.410 --> 00:10:09.120
program you could submit your swing and

00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:11.550
we'll do a video voice over just like

00:10:11.550 --> 00:10:13.680
this on your swing and show you where

00:10:13.680 --> 00:10:15.930
you could potentially stand to improve

00:10:15.930 --> 00:10:18.120
in terms of distance or consistency or

00:10:18.120 --> 00:10:21.110
whatever is ailing you
