Slow to Fast - Tempo & Transition

When students are struggling with transition, I will often ask them what they are feeling. Their responses will usually be grouped into (2) categories; tempo or position related. For those who say they feel quick in transition or even "stalled" at impact, I will have them focus on (1) simple, but effective swing thought. Specifically, I will have them focus on a slow and deliberate transition, followed by a fast and explosive turn of the body & release of the club. Ultimately, this tempo related swing thought is very effective for getting players who "fight" their body or club in transition to allow for a more natural and free-flowing downswing. That is, feeling slow at the start of the downswing will allow for the arms to shallow naturally and the body to pivot and move into a powerful delivery position. Then from there, a player can release the club as fast as he/she can manage without any unnecessary compensations or loss of speed.

Playlists: Keys To Transition, Find Your Best Swing Quickly

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This tempo drill is slow to fast or fast to slow.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So I always ask golfers which do you feel when you're when I'm looking for feedback?

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:14,000
I'll ask them, do you feel more of a position like was the club outside or inside or did

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:20,000
you feel more of a sequence like that was quicker, that was slow or that was long and

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:23,000
seropy or tighten compact?

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:28,000
Those that I kind of group golfers into, are you more sensitive to the tempo or are you

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:29,000
more sensitive to the position?

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:33,000
So this is more of a position feel.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:38,000
So fast to slow or slow to fast is looking at transition into downswing.

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:45,000
What typically happens is golfers who feel really quick early on or through the start of

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:51,000
transition will tend to feel almost slowing down or bracing as they have to recover and

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:53,000
make some adjustments.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:58,000
Where golfers who tend to feel really in sync or slow during the first half will then be

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:02,000
able to feel a lot of speed later and later.

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:07,000
So one drill that all have golfers do is basically you're going to do a slow transition

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:13,000
as you can do and then try to hit it hard once the club gets to about a shaft parallel

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:15,000
or a little past delivery position.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:21,000
So to feel a good one we're going to go up to the top we're going to come down and slow

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:27,000
motion and then once we get to right about here we're going to try and accelerate into

00:01:27,000 --> 00:01:28,000
a really good release.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:35,000
So we'll do that with just a touch more speed that was the kind of exaggerated slow version.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:41,000
So now it will look close to normal it's going to still feel like it's in slow motion.

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:49,000
So slow quick and it's still trying to exaggerate that feel of from right about here

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:54,000
having the arms going to more of their acceleration phase and not trying to get it too fast.

00:01:54,000 --> 00:02:00,000
Now what I'll usually do is I'll ask all first to do the opposite just for comparison

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:05,000
because it's helpful for the brain to see what it feels like to do it well but then confirm

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:08,000
that it knows what it feels like when it does it poorly.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:13,000
So now on this one I'm going to try to do this part of the swing is fast as I can and

00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:16,000
then have it kind of coast through impact.

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:22,000
So this would be the fastest slow version.

00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:24,000
And sometimes I shake it when I do that one.

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:30,000
So this is where you'll see that it's the tempo in the positions.

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:34,000
So just by getting a little bit fast it totally threw me out of position.

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:41,000
So now we'll do another one of the slow motion in transition and then fast through the release.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
So slow and then fast through the release.

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:51,000
If you have a hard time feeling the fast through the release then I recommend doing the pelvic

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:57,000
punch where basically you're going to go to about waist height and then from here you're

00:02:57,000 --> 00:03:01,000
going to try and hit the ball a reasonable distance.

00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:05,000
I'll usually say as hard as you can but a reasonable distance.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:07,000
So I'm not just going for control here.

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:09,000
I'm going for speed.

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:17,000
So from about waist height until into the follow through trying to really accelerate through

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:18,000
there.

00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:22,000
Now I'm going to take it back up to the top of the swing.

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:30,000
Feel slow in transition and then speed through the release.

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:33,000
Tiny bit fat on that one.

00:03:33,000 --> 00:03:39,000
Felt it get evolved maybe a touch too soon where I got most of my speed with my arms instead

00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:40,000
of the body.

00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:45,000
But it's a little sequence details that if you are more of a rhythm player will be extremely

00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:47,000
helpful.

00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:51,000
So slow fast that was a pretty good one.

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:56,000
So if you struggle with getting quick in the transition, experiment with the timing of

00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:01,000
what happens right around here whether you go from slow to fast or from fast to slow.
