Shallow With The Extender

Use the shaft extender to help you visualize shallow arms. This is similar to the "handle in the bucket" idea but uses different equipment. It is more restrictive to your swing but can provide a stronger visual if you have a tendency to get steep.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:02,000
Stirl is arm shallowing with the extender.

00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:06,000
So I've got my swing extender, but you can just take

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:10,000
an alignment stick and hold it just underneath the grip,

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:13,000
so it extends about a foot or so.

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:17,000
The challenge with the extender drills is you can't really do swings

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:21,000
where you go past about waist height in the falter,

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:24,000
because eventually the club would pass and you're going to hit yourself,

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:29,000
and it's either going to break it or at least disrupt the learning process.

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:32,000
So what we're going to do with the shallowing with the extender

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:35,000
is we're going to focus on transition.

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:39,000
So what can often happen is during transition,

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:43,000
many golfers will rotate either the trail shoulder or the lead forearm

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:46,000
and get the club working more vertically.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:51,000
So now because of the extender, I can see that that's pointing more in line with my feet.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:53,000
You can see that's a very vertical position.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:58,000
If I got here, one of the few ways that I would be able to then hit a golf flow

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:02,000
would be to then stand up and kind of shallow it out very late.

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:05,000
But that's going to tend to cause some contact issues.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:09,000
So what I would prefer is during transition,

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:13,000
I'm going to shallow the club or get the butt end of the extender

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:15,000
pointed out towards the target line.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:19,000
So now I've got the butt end of the club pointed out towards the target line.

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:22,000
Now I can work on my release movements on the way through.

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:26,000
So you can actually hit little shots or slow motion,

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:33,000
kind of tai chi style swings, but you won't be able to follow through past

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:36,000
about waist height in the falter.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:40,000
Now one of the ways that you can see from the face on view

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:43,000
is if you're using a mirror or something like that,

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:47,000
if the steeper you get it, typically the higher the clubhead is going to look,

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:53,000
the shallow where you get it, the more the clubhead is going to look low compared to the hands.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:56,000
So if you go up towards the top of the swing in your shallow,

00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:00,000
you'll see that the clubhead and your hands are about the same height,

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:06,000
where if you steep in the clubhead will be drastically higher than the hands.

00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:11,000
It's kind of a lines with these horizontal swings where the clubhead and the hands are about the same height.

00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:18,000
And then working on feeling that shallow movement here with a little bit of visual guidance,

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:25,000
can really help you kind of overcome an overall tendency to get really steep in transition,

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:28,000
especially if you're a visual learner.
