Mastering Club Face Control

This game is a great addition to your practice routine before an upcoming event or tournament round. It will allow a player to finely tune their feel for face to path and face to target control. A player will pick their preferred shot shape or curve at the very beginning of the game and as they progress, they will learn how to repeat and control the severity of the selected curve. This differs from the traditional 9 shot drill where a player will be playing with the face to path relationship in order to hit different curvatures at various flights. The added challenge of this drill is that if at any point, a player hits a "double-cross", or a shot that is the opposite of the curve that was selected, they will have to start the game over from scratch. Ultimately, this game will help you build a "go-to" shot that you can repeat on the course and under pressure, while also refining and raising the awareness for your release mechanics.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
This drill is mastering club-based control.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:07,000
So I use this mastering club-based control drill

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:11,000
oftentimes with players getting ready for an event

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:14,000
more working on owning their swing.

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:18,000
It's a great way of taking your mechanics

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:21,000
and refining your feel or sensitivity to it

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:24,000
so that you can execute different shots on the course.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:29,000
Now with learning how to alter the path or the face

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:32,000
I love drills like the nine shot drill

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:35,000
or going from draw straight fade.

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:39,000
Those are great ways to work on the sensitivity of the path in the face.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:43,000
But in this drill, what we're going to do is we're going to primarily work on

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:47,000
curving it one direction but vary the amounts of the start lines

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
the targets so that we can master face the path control

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:53,000
as well as face the target control.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:57,000
So there are three stages to executing

00:00:57,000 --> 00:00:59,000
where to playing this game.

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:03,000
Stage number one is you are going to try and hit

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:07,000
three different amounts of curve to the same target.

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:10,000
You're going to settle in on a curve that you like

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:14,000
and then stage number two is you're going to try and hit

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:18,000
the exact same curve but to three different targets.

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
So you'll start, you know, let's say right edge of the green

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:24,000
bunker and then left leg.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:28,000
So you're going to pick dramatically different targets to switch up our visual.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:33,000
Then stage three is you're going to try and hit the exact same curve

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:35,000
amount to the same target.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:39,000
So stage number one is same target three curves.

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:43,000
Stage number two is same curve three targets and then stage number three

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:46,000
is same curve and same target.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:51,000
So in order to execute stage number one which is the same target

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:54,000
three different start lines and three different curves amounts,

00:01:54,000 --> 00:01:59,000
you're going to have to get aware of how much the face is close to the path

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:02,000
and you're going to have to get connected to the body alignment

00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:04,000
to help you control the start line.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:08,000
So I'm going to start with trying to hit a slight draw

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:14,000
and then I'm going to add a little bit more draw until level three

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:17,000
I'm going to be or the third ball in this series

00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:19,000
I'm going to be trying to hit a really big hook.

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:26,000
So I'm going to aim the stick closer to the left bunker

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:31,000
and I'm going to try to start this one five yards rate of it

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:33,000
or pretty much over this flag.

00:02:33,000 --> 00:02:37,000
So now I'm just trying to execute stage number one.

00:02:42,000 --> 00:02:44,000
Okay perfect.

00:02:44,000 --> 00:02:48,000
So I hit a slight fade.

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:53,000
So the goal of this game and I'm glad that I did that because I reminded me

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:57,000
to remind you that the goal of this game is to master the face

00:02:57,000 --> 00:02:58,000
to path relationship.

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:03,000
So I would much rather have it curve too much than the wrong direction.

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:06,000
Good players tend to make some of their doubles in triples

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:08,000
when the ball curves the wrong way.

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:11,000
So the goal of this game is to get through all nine shots

00:03:11,000 --> 00:03:14,000
without having the ball curve the wrong way.

00:03:14,000 --> 00:03:17,000
So unfortunately even though that was my first ball, I lost the game.

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:20,000
Luckily it was my first ball so I'm just going to start over.

00:03:20,000 --> 00:03:23,000
So we're going to try and hit the small draw.

00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:27,000
I'm going to make sure the face is maybe a little bit more closed

00:03:27,000 --> 00:03:29,000
on the way down.

00:03:31,000 --> 00:03:34,000
So there we have a very slight draw.

00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:38,000
So a couple, you know, three yard draw, very slight draw.

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:41,000
Finish just right of the bunker.

00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:46,000
So now I'm going to change my start line and I'm going to hit a much bigger draw.

00:03:46,000 --> 00:03:48,000
So I'm going to preset some of the face closed.

00:03:48,000 --> 00:03:51,000
So I don't have to make a major change to my swing.

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:54,000
So club faces a little more closed.

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:01,000
So now I have a much bigger draw working its way toward the bunker.

00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:06,000
The wind is kind of holding it up but that definitely drew about twice as amount

00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:08,000
or twice as much which was my goal.

00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:10,000
Now I'm going to change this into a bigger hook.

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:14,000
So I'm going to aim off the green and try to get it to curve all the way back

00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:15,000
to the bunker.

00:04:15,000 --> 00:04:18,000
So now I'm going to varied the amount of the club face closed.

00:04:18,000 --> 00:04:22,000
Try to close it a little bit even more and get the start line more to the right

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:23,000
with my setup.

00:04:28,000 --> 00:04:30,000
So really big hook.

00:04:30,000 --> 00:04:33,000
You might have seen my foot slide out.

00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:38,000
So I definitely missed the target but it didn't curve the wrong way.

00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:39,000
So I'm not out of the game yet.

00:04:39,000 --> 00:04:43,000
I'm going to try one more time to hit the big curve.

00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:46,000
So close the face.

00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:50,000
So that was much closer that's finishing.

00:04:50,000 --> 00:04:57,000
It was just a slightly bit fat but it finished in the bunker and it started right

00:04:57,000 --> 00:05:01,000
of the green so it matched the curve that I was trying to create.

00:05:01,000 --> 00:05:05,000
Now for level two I'm going to settle in on you know,

00:05:05,000 --> 00:05:10,000
especially with this wind and seeing that I hit a shot that went off to the right

00:05:10,000 --> 00:05:12,000
at faded when I tried to hit a little draw.

00:05:12,000 --> 00:05:15,000
Today I'm going to try and hit more of the medium draw.

00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:22,000
So I'm going to alter my start line back to those flags and I'm going to try to hit

00:05:22,000 --> 00:05:34,000
maybe more of like a 10 yard draw instead of a 5 yard draw.

00:05:34,000 --> 00:05:39,000
And that is pretty straight just writing the wind.

00:05:39,000 --> 00:05:44,000
We'll try it one more time at the same target.

00:05:44,000 --> 00:05:51,000
I lost that commitment and got slightly distracted by the other alignment stick.

00:05:51,000 --> 00:05:58,000
At least that's the excuse I'm using right now.

00:05:58,000 --> 00:06:02,000
So there we have that slight draw until the wind hit it.

00:06:02,000 --> 00:06:09,000
So now I have to try and hit the same draw the same amount but I'm going to move my

00:06:09,000 --> 00:06:12,000
alignment towards the center of the range.

00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:23,000
So this changes or this forces me to vary my visual and make sure I can reproduce this

00:06:23,000 --> 00:06:29,000
just based on my feels not based on getting into a groove or pattern.

00:06:29,000 --> 00:06:36,000
So club face a little more closed.

00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:40,000
Well until but got the right amount of curve.

00:06:40,000 --> 00:06:44,000
So happy with that.

00:06:44,000 --> 00:06:48,000
And then we're going to kick it all the way to the left flag.

00:06:48,000 --> 00:06:53,000
So this feels a little awkward because I'm aiming pretty much across the range.

00:06:53,000 --> 00:06:57,000
This is great to do especially if you're on a little more crowded range and it gives you

00:06:57,000 --> 00:07:03,000
a slight sense of being uncomfortable when there's people around you and you're not at

00:07:03,000 --> 00:07:06,000
aiming straight down where the stall is pointing.

00:07:06,000 --> 00:07:17,000
So now same amount of curve that little 10 yard draw or that medium 10 yard draw I should say.

00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:21,000
Good started it pretty much dead where I wanted to got my 10 yard draw.

00:07:21,000 --> 00:07:27,000
So I made it through stage number two with my one little moly again.

00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:31,000
If I was being real strict on myself, I would have had to start over.

00:07:31,000 --> 00:07:37,000
So now the goal is same target, same amount of curves and now I'm going to try to put three balls in the

00:07:37,000 --> 00:07:40,000
bunker starting them over the flags.

00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:47,000
So starting them at the flag.

00:07:48,000 --> 00:07:55,000
So that's ball number one with the right amount of curve.

00:07:55,000 --> 00:08:06,000
And again I've got a little fade wind so it's killing some of the amount of curve but that was pretty comfortable with what I want.

00:08:06,000 --> 00:08:14,000
A little less but luckily I chose the medium curve so that was I'll call that close enough finished.

00:08:14,000 --> 00:08:29,000
So personally in between the little draw and the medium draw but I'll take it and then last one this is it to win the game.

00:08:29,000 --> 00:08:38,000
I left it out to the right. So unfortunately I've got to start over you do too. This game is to help you master your club face control but face the path as well as face the target.

00:08:38,000 --> 00:08:52,000
It's really good for skill building your awareness of the face rotation and motorcycle movement. Whether you hit fades or draws just pick your comfortable ball flight and if you happen to hit a double cross the game is over and you got to start over.

00:08:52,000 --> 00:09:01,000
Get good at this game and you will have much more confidence in curving the ball the way that you want without the fear of the double cross on the course.
